Fourteen drivers set to compete in the 109th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge this Sunday will square off Friday in the Oscar Mayer $150,000 Pit Stop Challenge at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The annual tradition on Miller Lite Carb Day features head-to-head competition between pit crews and will take place at 2:30 p.m. ET in front of the iconic main straightaway grandstands. The action airs live on FS1 and the FOX Sports app.
SEE: Bracket
The winning crew will earn $50,000, with $25,000 going to the runner-up.
Josef Newgarden and his Team Penske crew won last year's Pit Stop Challenge before capturing the '500' for the second consecutive year. Newgarden also drove the winning Pit Stop Challenge car in 2022, and Team Penske has won the Pit Stop Challenge a record 19 times.
Newgarden is one of seven drivers to have won the Pit Stop Challenge and the '500' in the same year. Newgarden and Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward are the only pair of drivers to finish first and second in the two marquee events in the same year, last May.
Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Newgarden will begin this bracket format against second-year Ed Carpenter Racing driver Christian Rasmussen. O'Ward and Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon, a four-time winner of the Pit Stop Challenge, will have first-round byes.
Other first-round matchups include Graham Rahal of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and Conor Daly of Juncos Hollinger Racing, Colton Herta of Andretti Global w/Curb-Agajanian and rookie Nolan Siegel of Arrow McLaren, Rinus VeeKay of Dale Coyne Racing and NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing, rookie Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing's Alexander Rossi, and Will Power of Team Penske and Christian Lundgaard of Arrow McLaren.
The first driver listed in these pairings receives lane choice in the first round. Quicker previous round time determines lane choice in subsequent rounds. Rasmussen will have lane choice against Newgarden; O'Ward and Dixon will have lane choice in their second-round matchups.
The final round is a best-of-three competition, with lane choice for the first run determined by the car with the quicker run in the previous round. Cars swap lanes for the second run.
During each round, crews will simulate a fuel hookup and change all four Firestone Firehawk ties.
The Pit Stop Challenge was first held in 1977, with Jim McElreath beating Wally Dallenbach in the finals.
Miller Lite Carb Day festivities include a two-hour practice for all 33 cars beginning at 11 a.m. ET on FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. Public gates open at 8 a.m.
The Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge is Sunday (10 a.m., FOX, FOX Deportes, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network).

The perfect track couldn't come at a better time for a struggling Josef Newgarden

Josef Newgarden needs to get his season back in sync. He sits 11th in the INDYCAR standings, a near insurmountable 185 points behind championship leader Alex Palou. The Team Penske driver has led just two laps and has a best finish of ninth in the last six races after opening the season with a third-place run at St. Petersburg. Newgarden needs a race at a track where he is ultra-comfortable and has a strong history. Welcome to World Wide Technology Raceway, commonly known as Gateway. This place has been Newgarden's domain in recent years and possibly no one is looking forward to this weekend (Sunday, 8 p.m. ET on FOX) as much as Newgarden. He won the first race in INDYCAR's return to Gateway in 2017. And won again in 2020. And 2021. And 2022. And 2024. That's five wins in his nine starts at the track, a 1.25-mile oval located just across the river from St. Louis. This year, his qualifying hasn't gone well as he has an average spot of 13th — his worst average starting position in the last 10 years. At WWTR, Newgarden has been an awesome qualifier as he has started in the first two rows in eight of the nine races. The one race where he didn't start in the front two rows, he started in Row 3. "The secret to our success on the ovals has been our cars," Newgarden said after the WWTR win a year ago. "You really can't will everything on an oval." Here are Newgarden's make-a-difference stats at Gateway: Newgarden has led 599 laps, compared to the driver with the next-highest total being Will Power at 450. Scott Dixon has led 379 (which includes 78 laps in the 2003 race), followed by Pato O'Ward (159) and Colton Herta (134). Series points leader Alex Palou has led ... no laps at WWTR, a place where Palou has started in the first five rows only once and has just one top-five finish. Newgarden hopes his own prowess on ovals for him and his Penske teammates continues. "You have to drive the car, get the most out of it," Newgarden said after that win last year. "When you have the best cars in the field, it makes your job a lot easier. "I think that's been the case for us. We've had incredible oval cars consistently over the last five, six years. We've just had great, great oval cars." This will be just the second oval race of the season (and the Indy 500 is so unique, it is unlike any other oval) and the first race this season where drivers return to a track where they raced the hybrid last year. Newgarden will have his engineer Luke Mason double as his strategist this weekend. For the last two races, Mason has been the strategist while Raul Prados has been the engineer. But Prados is part of the Penske sports-car team that is competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For Newgarden, he has a strong connection with Mason. "Luke's incredible," Newgarden said prior to the Detroit Grand Prix earlier this month about Mason taking over as strategist, at least in the interim. "That [role] won't be an issue." And while Newgarden has just one podium this year, the intense competitor speaks with confidence. "We can win any weekend," he said. "I always believe that." 'I love this mid-western energy; it's beautiful': How the Pacers fans helped win Game 3

INDIANAPOLIS — After T.J. McConnell tallied his fourth assist of the second quarter less than three minutes into the period, he gestured for Indiana Pacers fans to make more noise before pointing to his ears and said, 'I can't hear you.' An already boisterous crowd draped in gold shirts that read 'But this is Indiana' got even louder. Indiana hosted an NBA Finals game for the first time since 2000 on Wednesday. The Pacers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-107 to take a 2-1 series lead behind dominant bench play spearheaded by Bennedict Mathurin. The third-year guard finished with 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. 'The state of Indiana is about basketball, and that's the first time I really felt it,' Mathurin said about the Pacers crowd at Game 3. Among the Pacers crowd was former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee, Indianapolis 500 champion Alex Palou, Indiana Fever stars Caitlin Clark and Aaliyah Boston, Pacers legend Reggie Miller, Manchester City star Manuel Akanji and actor and Pacers fan Terry Crews. Re-live the Pacers unbelievable run to the NBA Finals in IndyStar's commemorative book During the fourth quarter, McAfee appeared on the jumbotron to remind fans that 'it's been 9,126 days since our state hosted an NBA Finals,' urging them to 'turn this city up.' The Pacers faithful responded to McAfee's call, but by this juncture in the game, the crowd noise had already motivated Crews to switch careers. 'I was half suited up. I was ready to go out there,' said Crews, who was wearing a Jermaine O'Neal Pacers jersey. 'Hearing this crowd made me feel like I wanted to go out and play. I love this mid-western energy; it's beautiful.' To opponents, that energy is daunting. Three-time NBA champion Rick Fox was on the Lakers team that defeated the Pacers in their last finals appearance. Wednesday's Game 3 in Indianapolis felt no different than the one Fox played in 20 years ago. 'This is my second Game 3 in Indiana and the first time I couldn't hear myself think,' Fox, who attended Warsaw High School in Indiana, told IndyStar. "This time, I don't have to compete, but it matches the same intensity I've always known Indiana basketball to have. It doesn't matter if it's middle school, high school, college or the pros.' Fox called the Pacers crowd the 'sixth man' and said a supportive crowd like Indiana's will 'push a player on' and allow players to have hope in comeback scenarios. The Thunder held a five-point lead heading into the fourth before being outscored 32-18 in the final period. The Pacers made 13-of-21 field goals and held the Thunder to 35% shooting in the fourth. 'They (the crowd) were everything we had hoped for tonight. We talked about telling our crowd through the media that we really need them,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 'They were great. Especially in the fourth quarter, it just went up a few decibels.' Sure, Pacers fans are loud. But Paycom Center is also thunderous when Oklahoma plays. To Fox, however, Indiana distinguishes itself from the Thunder and the rest of the league because behind the deafening noise levels is a profound knowledge of basketball. 'You have an educated IQ basketball fan that has come from birth playing basketball and understanding the game, so they're passionate and connective to every possession because they comprehend it on another level,' Fox said. Matt Asen, known as the 'Pacer Guy,' has been a franchise fan for 38 years. Asen believes the Pacers have the 'coach and the depth' to defeat the Thunder. Asen hopes the Pacers fan base can cheer their team to a Game 4 victory on Friday. 'We rocked the building tonight and hopefully we can rock Oklahoma out of here,' Asen said. 'New York and Boston they root for their superstars and they think they deserve it. But in 49 states, it's just basketball, but this is Indiana,' Asen said. 'We are an educated fan base hungry for a championship.'
