Gauteng unveils high-tech, tamper-proof number plates
The new intelligent number plate system is a secure, traceable and smart solution, incorporating tamper-evident decals, forensic QR codes and a fully digitised back-end portal.
These technological enhancements are designed to combat vehicle theft, fraud and cloning, while improving road safety and empowering traffic law enforcement across the province.
Speaking at the launch of the new plates on Thursday, Lesufi said the new system is a major step forward in the fight against criminality in the province.
'We are letting go of the old ways of fighting crime and introducing new ideas in this fight. With the help of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, we are now deploying a digital system that ensures we are able to account for every vehicle on our public roads.
'Those who are using fraudulent or duplicate number plates will have no space or time to drive on our roads,' he said at the launch held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
The province has launched a high-calibre 'weapon' in the fight against criminality and restoring order, he said.
Rollout and combating crime
The system will be piloted using g-Fleet vehicles affixed with the technologically advanced new number plates as part of the six-month stress testing project, before the provincial rollout.
This system is set to drastically improve the credibility of number plates and enable license plate tracking within the value chain, from manufacturer to the vehicle owner.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela highlighted that the launch represented a strategic provincial intervention to combat crime effectively and strengthen regulatory compliance.
She added that this is an important pillar in the broader Provincial Integrated Crime Prevention Strategy.
'By partnering with law enforcement agencies, metro police departments and the private sector, we are enhancing vehicle identification and traceability.
'These smart number plates will significantly reduce vehicle cloning, trafficking of stolen vehicles, and the use of falsified plates in criminal activities. It is about disrupting criminal networks and improving road safety,' the MEC said.
Meanwhile, as part of efforts to bolster traffic law enforcement, the Gauteng Provincial Government welcomed 96 officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
These additional 'boots on the ground' officers will enhance visibility and strengthen crime-fighting efforts in the province.
'With these additional resources, the provincial government will also be able to undertake interventions to stabilise and manage taxi violence at identified hotspots, promote responsible road usage and enhance traffic management,' the MEC said. – SAnews.gov.za

Providing context to his involvement with Citydev Construction, Zungu gave a nuanced account: 'In 2017, we were introduced to this private company by the then Ward Councillor of Ward 122, as they were undertaking bond housing in Lehae. I was the chairperson of the business forum at the time. Initially, I supplied materials for them and was later appointed as a social facilitator.' Zungu explained: 'We worked very well until I was elected Ward Councillor of 122 after the previous councillor passed away. I then resigned from the business forum to focus on my councillorship. He concluded with a warning about internal party conflict: 'In short, all this has been a fabrication and is meant to tarnish my name from members within the ANC.' 5 dead in head-on collision on N2 in KZN
The death toll from the horrific head-on collision between a sugar truck and a light motor vehicle on the N2 on Saturday morning has risen to five. The crash, which occurred between Amatigulu and Dokodweni, claimed five lives after emergency personnel revised the scene, The Witness reports. However, according to MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the truck driver remains missing. 'It is not clear whether he is under the truck or if he fled the scene. Our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and investigators from the South African Police Service's Accident Unit are currently reconstructing the accident,' said Duma. He said that based on initial reports from RTI, the truck slammed into a light motor vehicle and pushed it to the side of the road. The truck then overturned and crushed the light motor vehicle into pieces. The five victims died instantly and their bodies have been taken to the mortuary. Duma expressed condolences to the victims' families, who are being traced by officials from the department. 'We request family members and friends who are looking for their loved ones who were travelling to an event and did not reach their destination to contact Captain Thambo Shandu at Gingindlovu Police Station,' said Duma. He also urged community members, who had gathered at the crash site with buckets, waiting to loot the sugar, to leave the area immediately, warning that the diesel leak from the overturned truck poses an explosion risk.
