Pratapgarh: There was jubilation inside the Pratapgarh district jail after the UP board declared its classes 10 and 12 results as a murder convict scored 71.6%, highest marks among all 105 inmates who sat for the intermediate exams across various prisons in the state.
Moreover, two others, including one convicted for murder, also cleared the class 10 exams with impressive marks. The candidates took their examinations at the Banda district jail facility after receiving authorisation from the court to participate in the tests.
Jail superintendent Rishabh Dwived told TOI, "One of the convicts, Pintu alias Omprakash Gupta (35), a resident of Sheetal Baksh Ka Purwa, Amethi, has passed the intermediate examination with 71.6% marks. He is serving life imprisonment under section 302 of IPC."
He said, "Pintu, lodged at Pratapgarh district jail since June 22, 2021, used to study at night as he works in the jail canteen. He obtained all books related to his subjects from the jail library and often took help from jail teachers."

Two other inmates, including undertrial Shoyeb (25), a resident of Mahuar, Pratapgarh, and convict Jaiprakash (41), a resident of Rampur Gauri, Pratapgarh, have cleared the high school examination with 56.8% and 60% marks respectively.
Jai Prakash, convicted for murder and lodged in jail since Mar 2024, works as a mason inside the jail campus. He used to study during lunch break between 11 am and 2 pm. Besides, he used to wake up early to prepare for the exams.
Besides, Shoyeb, lodged at Pratapgarh district jail since May 2023 (Section 302 IPC), took the help of video lectures. Earlier, Shoyeb was not interested in studies, but when his family members and jail administrative officials advised him to pursue his further studies, he, with the help of the jail library, appeared in the exams.
Dwivedi said, "All the three inmates, including both convicts, left no stone unturned to come out with flying colours." This achievement is a testament to his determination to pursue education despite confinement.
He added, "The trio was confident of their success before the announcement of results."
Officials said the success of the three inmates will encourage others to take up their education. For the convenience of such inmates, books are being expanded in the prison library, and the library is being given a modern look through projectors and screens.
A total of 182 jail inmates lodged in different prisons across the state cleared the UP Board exams, the results of which were declared last week. Officials said 199 inmates (94 for class 10 and 105 for class 12) took the exams. As many as 91 inmates from both the classes cleared their respective exams. The overall pass percentage for class 10 among jail inmates was 96.81% and 86.67% for class 12. Among the inmates who appeared for the class 10 exams, the highest were from Agra (17), and all cleared their exams.

Why was the complaint dismissed so quickly? The petition was swiftly dismissed by the Florida Bar on jurisdictional grounds, but in Washington, one of the young punks who now work for the federal government, particularly at the Department of Justice (DOJ), sneered at it. In a statement given to the Miami Herald, Chad Mizelle, chief of staff for the Justice Department, stated that the Florida Bar has twice turned down performative attempts by these out-of-state attorneys to use the bar complaint procedure against AG Bondi.
