With Taylor Swift in house for Panthers-Oilers, Stuart Skinner can't 'Shake it off'
SUNRISE ― Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner was the subject of pregame mind games from Florida Panthers backup goalie Vitek Vanecek.
And it appears to have worked.
Just like he did before a Game 3 steamrolling by the Panthers, Vanecek lined up directly opposite Skinner before Game 4, looking him directly in the eyes.

It occurred at a red line, in pregame warmups, and it was all a bit awkward and uncomfortable.
Vanecek is from the Czech Republic. Skinner is from Edmonton – ouch.
We don't know whether Vanecek delivered any intimidating messages in Czech.
Goaltenders have very specific routines. Just ask Florida star Sergei Bobrovsky.
Taylor Swift in attendance as Stuart Skinner yanked by Oilers
And it seemed pretty clear that Vanecek wanted to annoy Skinner by getting all up in his space.
"I've never seen that before," Oilers legend Wayne Gretzky said on TNT. "Trying to get in his head and they haven't even finished warmup."
It worked in Game 3, as Skinner was yanked after allowing five goals.

In Game 4, Skinner was benched again after allowed three first-period goals.
It was 3-0 Panthers after Period 1.
The Panthers have "Big Game Bob" and the Oilers don't.
Florida Panthers' Sergei Bobrovsky gives edge vs. Oilers
Pop superstar Taylor Swift was in the house and it was quite clear that despite that, Skinner was unable to "Shake it off."
Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift and Wayne Gretzky, from left, sit together during the second period as the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers play in Game Four of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final at Amerant Bank Arena on June 12, 2025 in Sunrise, Florida.
Before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last year, then-backup goalie Anthony Stolarz pulled off the exact same shenanigans, lining up in Skinner's space.
It may have helped, as Florida won the game, and the Stanley Cup, of course.
In pregame of Game 4, Oilers backup goalie Calvin Pickard skated over to Skinner while he was being harassed by Vanecek. It appeared he may have been telling Skinner to pay Vanecek no mind.

Didn't work.
By the time the second period had begun, Pickard had replaced Skinner.

What's next for Panthers, Oilers? Contract decisions await during offseason
What's next for Panthers, Oilers? Contract decisions await during offseason Show Caption Hide Caption Florida Panthers capture second straight Stanley Cup The Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers to win their second-straight Stanley Cup. Sports Pulse General manager of the year finalist Bill Zito hasn't heard yet whether he has won the award, but he has plenty of hard work ahead that could determine whether he's in the running again next year. The Florida Panthers won their second consecutive Stanley Cup title on June 17, two weeks before NHL free agency opens up on July 1. That gives Zito little time to work through the team's list of significant pending unrestricted free agents. Last year, he got an eight-year deal done with Sam Reinhart (for less than $9 million a year) before free agency opened. That paid off when the forward scored seven goals in the Stanley Cup Final, including four goals in the clinching game. This year's list includes some key players. According to puckpedia, the Panthers have $19 million in cap space. Here is what's awaiting the Panthers and Edmonton Oilers during the offseason: Run It Back! Celebrate Florida Panthers' back-to-back Stanley Cups with our commemorative hardcover book What's next for the Florida Panthers? The biggest free agent is Sam Bennett, 28, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after scoring a league-best 15 goals. He had 51 points in 62 games during the Panthers' three consecutive runs to the Stanley Cup Final. In addition to his scoring prowess, he plays with an edge and is sometimes accused of going over the line. Brad Marchand, who came over in a shocking trade from the Boston Bruins, is also a pending UFA. The 37-year-old had six goals during the final, scoring on breakaways and spectacular moves. Panthers teammates and coach Paul Maurice raved about his attitude. Pending UFA defenseman Aaron Ekblad, 29, has been key to the Panthers through the years since he was taken No. 1 overall in 2014. He's on the top defense pairing with Gustav Forsling but missed 20 games with a PED suspension and another two for a playoff hit. Other pending UFAs include Nate Schmidt, Tomas Nosek, Nico Sturm and backup goalie Vitek Vanecek. No. 1 goalie Sergei Bobrovsky is entering the final year of his contract, as is defenseman Niko Mikkola. Core players Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe, Anton Lundell, Seth Jones, Forsling and Dmitry Kulikov are signed long-term, and Eetu Luostarinen and Evan Rodrigues have two years left on their contracts. What's next for the Edmonton Oilers? The Oilers fell short for the second year in a row as the Panthers' forechecking scheme frustrated them again. They have $11 million in cap space as Leon Draisaitl's extension kicks in and makes him the NHL's highest-paid player. Connor McDavid, entering the last year of his contract and a potential free agent at the end of the season, is eligible to sign an extension as early as July 1, which should restore him atop the league's salary structure. Or he can wait. An extension would take effect in 2026-27. The Oilers have a long list of pending UFAs, including Connor Brown, 40-year-old Corey Perry, Trent Frederic, Kasperi Kapanen and John Klingberg.. Defenseman Evan Bouchard is a restricted free agent. He's known for his offensive abilities but also had a playoff-high 41 giveaways. Goalies Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have one left on their contracts at a combined $3.6 million cap hit. Defensemen Mattias Ekholm, Jake Walman, Brett Kulak and Troy Stecher also have a year left on their deals.

Stanley Cup damage: NHL champion trophy banged up after Florida Panthers clinched title
The Florida Panthers handled the Oilers but maybe were a bit too loose when handling the Stanley Cup. One of the most decorated prizes in all of sports took some damage in last night's celebration as the Panthers captured their second consecutive Stanley Cup. The source of these cuts is not clear but they were suffered on the ice while the celebration was going on. Advertisement During the annual tradition of the winning team passing the Stanley Cup after winning it, cuts on the famed trophy were picked up by cameras. THE PARTY HAS BEGUN: Elbo Room celebrates Florida Panthers Stanley Cup win. Watch webcams live The base of the trophy also appears to be bent. Photos of the damage were snapped from the team's impromptu celebration at the Fort Lauderdale bar Elbo Room on Wednesday morning. The Panthers further damaged the trophy on Wednesday morning as images surface of a dent on the bottom of the cup. Colorado Avalanche Cup Drop This is not the first instance where the Stanley Cup has been damaged on the ice when three years ago, the Colorado Avalanche dented the cup. Former Avalanche right wing Nicolas Aube-Kubel was carrying the trophy and lost his balance while making his way to his team picture, which caused a dent at the bottom of the trophy. Advertisement BACK TO BACK: How many teams have won back-to-back Stanley Cups? Florida Panthers join historic list The Stanley Cup has been damaged before in many instances, but the Avalanche's moment marked one of the most recent memories of players not exactly handling with care until the Panthers followed behind soon after. More Stanley Cup damage history: Mark Messier parties with the Cup The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup back in 1987 and eventual Hall of Famer forward Mark Messier decided to go out clubbing and partying with the trophy. The trophy received lots of damage during its time with Messier and needed to be repaired before going back to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The table is the culprit The Boston Bruins captured the Stanley Cup in 2011 and took the trophy to each players hometown as Bruins tradition. On Micheal Ryder's day, he took the trophy to a media event in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Advertisement Ryder placed the trophy on a table next to a podium and was stunned when the table collapsed which dented the cup on its fall. A horse's snack When the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994, they took the cup to Belmont Park to celebrate with the Kentucky Derby winner: Go For Gin. The horse was in its stable when Eddie Olczyk used the cup to feed the thoroughbred oats. The cup was damaged when Go For Gin started eating. Olczyk is now TNT's top NHL game analyst and a horse racing analyst for NBC. Other trophy injuries: Wisconsin Badgers 2020 In December 2020, after the Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Wake Forest in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, 42-28, the team appeared to have shattered the trophy. Each player on the team denied who may have caused the trophy's demise but former Badger Scott Nelson pointed to former badger Graham Mertz. Alabama's $30K accident In 2012, the Alabama football team won the 2012 national championship and were presented with "The Coaches' Trophy." During the Crimson Tide's annual A-Day scrimmage, a father of a player created a huge accident. Carelton Tinker, the father of Crimson Tide's long snapper Carson Tinker, tripped on a rug that was underneath the trophy's display case and caused the trophy to fall and shatter. Pete Weber's most embarrassing moment In 1991, famous bowler Pete Weber defeated Mark Thayer to win the U.S. Open championship. The eagle trophy was handed to Weber after his win and when he held it over his head. The eagle fell and broke on the bowling alley floor. Weber called it his most embarrassing moment of his career in a Sports Illustrated interview.
