Law Minister Meghwal presents India's vision to become global arbitration hub at ICA London
New Delhi/ London, June 5 (UNI) Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal laid out India's roadmap to becoming a global hub for arbitration and dispute resolution at the 3rd International Conference on 'Arbitrating Indo-UK Commercial Disputes'.
The conference was hosted by the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) at Church House Westminster, London, during the London International Disputes Week 2025.
The event brought together senior dignitaries and legal experts from both India and the UK, including Chief Justice of India BR Gavai (inaugural address), Lord Briggs of Westbourne, Judge of the UK Supreme Court (keynote address) Vikram Doraiswami, High Commissioner of India to the UK (special address), Justice Hima Kohli, Supreme Court of India, Harish Salve KC, Senior Advocate and International Arbitrator, Sujit Ghosh, Deputy High Commissioner of India to the UK, Arun Chawla, Director General, ICA, Geeta Luthra, Senior Advocate and Vice President, ICA, Dr NG Khaitan, President of ICA and Senior Partner at Khaitan and Co., and Karishma Vora, Barrister at 39 Essex Chambers, London and Member of the ICA International Advisory Committee.
Minister Meghwal underscored the importance of institutional arbitration, legislative reforms, and strategic global partnerships, as essential to strengthening investor confidence and boosting India's global economic standing. He noted that India's commitment is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
Key initiatives highlighted include, Amendments to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act (2015, 2019, 2020) to ensure time-bound, confidential, and impartial processes. Formation of the Arbitration Council of India to promote institutional mechanisms. Abolition of automatic stay on arbitral awards. Promotion of mediated settlement and hybrid dispute resolution models.
The Minister emphasized that mainstreaming arbitration and mediation will reduce pendency in Indian courts by diverting commercial disputes to faster, cost-effective forums. He pointed to the National Mediation Conference held in May 2025 in New Delhi addressed by the President of India as a significant step in institutionalizing mediation.
"Clean, reliable, and cost-effective systems of dispute resolution are essential for India's growth as a global business hub," said Meghwal, adding that cooperation with countries like the UK and US will drive innovation and trust in legal systems.
By aligning arbitration norms with international best practices and encouraging diversity in arbitrators, India aims to create a dispute resolution regime that is fair, transparent, and globally respected.
The Indo-UK conference fostered legal and commercial ties between the two democracies and reinforced India's position as an emerging leader in international arbitration. Legal experts from both countries agreed that stronger arbitration frameworks will accelerate bilateral trade, especially following the India-UK Free Trade Agreement signed in May 2025, projected to double trade to $120 billion by 2030.
The conference concluded with a strong call for continued collaboration, setting the tone for arbitration to become the default mechanism in commercial dispute resolution, relieving court burden and enhancing India's global legal stature.

Austin, June 7 (UNI) After his falling out with US President Donald Trump over the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has now suggested forming his own political party, potentially further straining his ties with Trump. The multi-billionaire first floated the idea on Thursday on X/Twitter, while taking pot shots at the US President. Musk posted a poll on his account asking his 220 million followers if they think it's "time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle." Surprisingly, over 80% agreed with the poll. "The public has spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree. This is fate," he wrote, on Friday evening. Musk then endorsed a fan's suggestion that he name it the "America Party". The name bears a resemblance to America PAC (Political Action Committee), the political action committee founded by Musk last year that was his main vehicle for spending $239 million to help elect Trump and other Republican candidates in 2024, CBS News reported. However, forming a political party in the US is easier said than done, as the country's two major parties, the Democratic and the Republican party, along with several other big third parties such as the Libertarian, Constitution, and Alliance parties have made inroads into several major towns, municipalities, and cities, and have ballot access in every state. BJP names Kanad Purkayastha as candidate for Assam Rajya Sabha polls
Guwahati: The BJP on Saturday announced that the party's Assam state secretary Kanad Purkayastha would be its candidate for the June 19 Rajya Sabha election from the state. BJP's National General Secretary Arun Singh, in a statement, said the party's central election committee has approved the candidature of Purkayastha, who is currently the party's Assam state secretary. A party leader from southern Assam's Barak valley said that Purkayastha is the only son of veteran BJP leader and former Union minister Kabindra Purkayastha. Elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam are scheduled on June 19, with counting of votes set to take place the same day. The last date for filling of nominations is June 9, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 12. The ruling BJP had earlier announced that it would field a candidate for one of the seats, leaving the other seat to its ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam would be vacated after the retirement of Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP) on June 14. Assam has seven Rajya Sabha seats. After Trinamool Congress' Sushmita Dev, who was elected to the Upper House of Parliament from West Bengal, Purkayastha would be the second Rajya Sabha member from the Barak Valley. Hailing from Silchar, Dev, daughter of former Union Minister and late Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev, was earlier elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar parliamentary constituency. Over four million people, mostly Bengali speaking, reside in the three districts of the Barak Valley region in Southern Assam -- Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. Political observers said that despite the Barak Valley's substantial population and political significance, no leader from this region, adjoining Tripura, has previously been elected to the Rajya Sabha on a BJP ticket. Purkayastha's nomination is an attempt to deal with this gap and aims to strengthen the BJP's base among Bengali Hindus in Barak Valley.
