Dubai Culture Launches Immersive Interactive Experiences Around ‘Resonance' - Middle East Business News and Information
Dubai, UAE,April 2025: Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has announced a public programme accompanying the public art installation Resonance, created in collaboration with the Alserkal Arts Foundation in the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood. This initiative falls under the Authority's Dubai Public Art Strategy, which aims to transform the emirate into a global open-air art gallery, while reinforcing its leadership on the international cultural map.
Scheduled for 26 April, the event offers a unique opportunity to explore the aesthetic dimensions of artwork by graphic designer Maryam Namvar and architect Neda Salmanpour. It also highlights the area's distinctive architecture and immersive art installations, which enrich the local creative scene.
The agenda features a panel discussion titled 'Perception Reimagined: Sound and Place,' moderated by curator Munira Al Sayegh. Emirati sound artist Safeya Al Blooshi will share her insights on experimental field recordings to examine the relationship between our environment and sound and how acoustic characteristics define a place. Meanwhile, Maryam Namvar and Neda Salmanpour will discuss their experience creating Resonance, a work of art composed of three suspended metal panels that mirror the visual and auditory aspects of the district. The piece invites reflection on the interplay of wind, water, and architecture, as well as the historical and societal significance of the neighbourhood.
Nigerian artist and curator Ose Ekore will lead the listening session 'Weightlessness Through Sound,' offering attendees a collective immersion inspired by the natural elements surrounding the location. The programme includes a multisensory audiovisual walk titled 'In Reaction to Sound,' designed to engage the audience with the dynamic interaction of different senses in the creative process. Participants will experiment with capturing images of Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood in ways that blend listening with innovative storytelling.

Van Gogh Museum features African artist for first time - Visual Art - Arts & Culture
Expressive brushstrokes depict a man seated at a table, his face hidden behind a book of Japanese prints, a plastic chair in the corner, and a Nigerian passport lying on the table. It is one of 10 new paintings by Nigerian artist John Madu, created for "Paint Your Path" -- the first solo exhibition by an African artist at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum, which opened Friday. Madu, 42, produced the 10 works in just three months in his Lagos studio, each responding to one of seven paintings by the Dutch master. "Before I even knew who Van Gogh was, I knew about his work," said the artist, recalling how as a child he admired his father's calendars filled with Impressionist art. "Van Gogh's works actually stuck out to me because of the yellows, the swirls, the strokes," he told AFP. Madu plays on the global familiarity of Van Gogh's work to build connections between local and universal themes, notably through self-portraiture and the use of symbols. Van Gogh's famous wooden chair is reimagined by Madu as a white plastic seat -- sometimes the main subject, sometimes carried on the shoulder of a protagonist resembling the artist entering a cafe in France's Provence region with a yellow facade. "So I feel the world of Van Gogh plays out for people to relate to you," he said. "I really wanted to pay homage to this master I really love. "So I thought for it to blend perfectly, the strokes, the brush strokes, the colour theme should connect together. "That would make the works actually feel like one." This is not Madu's first dialogue with Western art -- his previous works have drawn inspiration from Gustav Klimt, Edward Hopper and Norman Rockwell. These references resonated with the "Beeldbrekers" ("Image Breakers"), a group of young adults who co-commissioned the exhibition with the goal of making the Van Gogh Museum more inclusive -- both in its exhibitions and outreach. "For me, especially, it's a kind of representation to see an African artist being represented in a museum like this," said Himaya Ayo, a 22-year-old member of the Beeldbrekers. May 30, 2025 Egyptian masked artist Tul8te and Emirati singer-rapper Almas are set to perform at Dubai's Beat the Heat Festival on Friday, July 4th, taking over the Dubai World Trade Centre with a dynamic double act. The event marks one of the opening nights of the month-long festival series, which features some of the most prominent names in Arabic alternative and pop music. Tul8te, known for his eclectic fusion of Arabic pop, trap, bossa nova, and psychedelic rock, returns to the region following international shows across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Almas, a leading voice in the UAE's emerging music scene, brings her signature blend of emotional lyricism and genre-crossing vocals to the stage. The Beat the Heat Festival continues on July 5th with Sharmoofers, Aziz Maraka, and Ghaliaa; on July 11th with Soulja, Montiyago, and Mo Ali; and on July 12th with Bader Al Shuaibi, Abdulaziz Louis, and Nasser Abbas.
