Grammy winner Nomcebo Zikode reacts to Court ruling against Open Mic Productions

IOL News11-05-2025
Grammy award-winning musician Nomcebo Zikode is disappointed over losing her legal case against Open Mic Productions.
In a statement, Zikode and her record label addressed the ruling by the High Court in Pretoria in her matter with Open Mic Productions and Africori SA.
Zikode and Open Mic have been embroiled in a legal battle since 2022. In her statement, Zikode expressed her view on the judgment, labelling it 'fundamentally flawed and deeply troubling.
The 'Bayethe' hitmaker's legal team is currently studying the full judgment and an appeal is being considered.
'While we respect the role of the Court, we cannot ignore the bigger picture: this case represents more than a contractual disagreement - it is about the rights of an artist to be acknowledged, compensated and respected for their work.

Colombian star Maluma champions children's hearing safety during concert performance

During a concert attended by thousands of fans in Mexico City, Colombian singer Maluma paused his performance to address a mother who brought her one-year-old child without ear protection. Image: Instagram Colombian singer Maluma's weekend show in Mexico City took an unexpected turn when he stopped mid-performance to address a mother in the crowd who had brought her one-year-old child without any ear protection. In a moment captured on video and now widely circulating online, the 'Borro Cassette' hitmaker paused the music and spoke directly to the unidentified woman. He said, 'Ma'am, I'm going to tell you something. Don't bring him here; leave him there. With all due respect, I'm already a father. What's he? A year old?' The Grammy-nominated artist went on to question the decision. 'Do you think it's a good idea to bring a one-year-old baby to a concert where the decibels are really loud, where the sound is really loud?' he asked, pointing out that the child 'doesn't even know what he's doing here'. Next Stay Close ✕ Maluma urged the mom to think about the child's well-being at future events. 'Next time, protect his ears or something. That's really irresponsible, and you were waving the baby around like he was a toy. 'That kid really doesn't want to be there,' he said, adding that as a father himself, he 'would never' bring his own child to such an environment. 'So next time, be a little more aware.' Maluma stops his concert in Mexico City to scold a mother who brought her 1-year-old baby without ear protection: 'That is an act of irresponsibility. And you're swinging him around as if he were a toy. That child doesn't want to be there.' — Pop Crave (@PopCrave) August 10, 2025 Hearing safety at concerts has become an increasing point of discussion in recent years, with some adult concertgoers choosing to wear noise-cancelling devices such as AirPods Pro 2, often set to transparency mode, to reduce the impact of high-volume sound systems. If adults take such precautions for their ear health, it is even more important for children's hearing to be protected, as their hearing is still developing, making them more vulnerable to damage. Health organisations warn that a child's hearing is especially sensitive, and prolonged exposure to loud noise at events such as concerts or professional sports games can cause irreversible harm. Parents are encouraged to know the warning signs of noise-induced hearing loss and take preventive measures to safeguard both their own hearing and that of their children.

Cynthia Erivo shines in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' revival

Cynthia Erivo has won widespread acclaim for her powerful portrayal of Jesus in a dynamic new rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar . The British actress and singer took on the role in a much-anticipated three-night production held at the Hollywood Bowl. The show took place in Los Angeles from 1 to 3 August. Her performance captivated audiences, blending vocal strength with a fresh, compelling interpretation of the character, according to The Guardian. The production attracted notable celebrity attendees, underscoring its significance in the theatre world. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber also made a special appearance, which added to the event's prestige and excitement. Directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, with Stephen Oremus as musical director and conductor. The show celebrated the rock opera's legacy while offering a renewed vision for modern audiences. Erivo, a multi-award-winning artist including a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy, embraced the role with confidence. Addressing the criticism over her casting as a Black queer woman in what some viewed as a traditionally male role, she responded, 'Why not?' She emphasised the production's spirit as a vibrant, inclusive celebration of her vocal talents and the musical's enduring message. The show's reimagining of the final days of Jesus Christ through Judas's perspective earned praise for its emotional intensity and social relevance. Cynthia Erivo's portrayal serves as an inspiring example of breaking traditional boundaries in art. It highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion on stage. Reflecting on her experience, Erivo said, 'This role challenges me as an artist and connects me to audiences in a profound way. It's a reminder that stories like these transcend time and culture.' This production not only honoured a classic musical but also brought a compelling contemporary voice to a global narrative, resonating strongly with diverse audiences, including those in South Africa. Selena Gomez celebrates perfume launch amid wedding plans

Selena Gomez dazzled in a shimmering white midi dress at the launch of her much-anticipated Rare Beauty perfume line in Santa Monica. The 33-year-old star looked stunning in a halter neck dress that perfectly hugged her petite frame. She completed the elegant ensemble with white strappy heels, pearl earrings, and her hair styled into a sleek bun. The perfume launch event attracted a lively crowd of influencers, celebrities, and friends. Among the guests were singer Becky G and stars from Love Island USA, according to Daily Mail. Selena Gomez shared her excitement about the new fragrance on Instagram, saying, 'Everyone smelled so good last night. Lol, but thank you for your love on this one. Nearly 5 years of work, and it somehow feels like we're just getting started. I'm so excited for what's in store!' Rare Beauty's first perfume, a gourmand scent crafted from notes of caramel, vanilla, pistachio, and sandalwood. It has already been praised for its grown-up yet feminine vibe. The fragrance is designed to be a personal scent, not overpowering but inviting, perfect for everyday wear. It retails around $75 (roughly R1,500) for a 50ml bottle, with a travel size available for $30 (about R600), making it accessible for fans eager to try Selena's latest creation. Selena Gomez has been juggling this launch alongside wedding preparations and promoting the upcoming new season of Only Murders in the Building . The couple, who announced their engagement in December 2024, are planning a wedding that reflects their unique tastes. Selena's preference for the wedding menu is notably unconventional. The singer revealed she wants her Nana's biscuits and gravy as a dessert instead of a traditional big cake. 'That sounds like dessert to me,' she said. Selena Gomez added, 'I think I'd want a mini cake for just us that we can freeze.' Benny Blanco, a Grammy-winning music producer, proposed with a spectacular marquise-cut diamond ring valued at around $225,000 (approximately R4.5 million). Their relationship extends into their music, with their first joint album, I Said I Love You First, debuting in March 2025. As she continues to grow her empire and personal life, Selena remains an inspiring figure who embraces authenticity and joy in every endeavour.
