Next Middlesbrough Odds & Betting: Gerrard Top Candidate For Riverside Job
Middlesbrough could be swapping one ex-England international for another in the dugout if the next Middlesbrough manager odds are anything to go with Steven Gerrard now the favourite to replace Michael Carrick.
Carrick was sacked nearly five weeks after Boro finished 10th in the Championship, four points off the play-off positions, confirming the Teessiders to a ninth successive season in the second tier.
Carrick guided Boro to the play-offs in his first season but has missed out in the last two seasons and after finishing with fewer points than the previous campaign, coupled with having to watch their local rivals, Sunderland, get promoted, the decision was made to remove the ex-Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder.
Assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also left the club, so it is a chance for a clean sweep at the Riverside.

Steve Cooper was the initial favourite installed by betting sites, and was quickly followed by former Luton boss Rob Edwards but now former England and Liverpool star Steven Gerrard is favourite at odds of just 11/8.
Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January, after 18 months in charge. He previously managed Aston Villa and Rangers, where he led the Scottish side Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years in 2020-21.
It is understood that interviews for the vacant role are taking place this week, and whether Gerrard is among those on the shortlist remains to be seen. He admitted in April that he was enjoying taking some time out but will the lure of the Riverside prove too strong?
He might not have any experience of the Championship, but second favourite Edwards certainly does, and he has been out of work since the Hatters sacked him in January.
The side were just two points above the Championship relegation zone, but that shouldn't overshadow the amazing job he did in taking them up to the Premier League.
He guided the side to a play-off final win over Coventry City in May 2023 to see them back in the top-flight for the first time in 30 years, and Middlesbrough would be love to be celebrating that this time next year.
Edwards is 5/2 to be the next Middlesbrough manager, but if they do want him then they may face competition with Bristol City also reportedly interested. Edwards has also been installed as the even-money favourite to be the Robins boss.
Cooper is next on the list in the next Middlesbrough manager betting market and reports in the north-east suggest he's been shortlisted for an interview.
He is another manager who has achieved promotion from the Championship, taking Nottingham Forest up in May 2022. He has been out of work since leaving Leicester in November, but he has admitted he is ready to return to management, albeit with a preference to work abroad.
Some betting sites have cut Sean Dyche's odds to 5/1, but there's been no mention of the ex-Everton boss being in the frame in local reporting, despite the success he enjoyed at this level as Burnley manager.
Another name linked is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was the favourite for the Southampton job before Will Still was named manager last month.
He guided Wednesday to 12th in the league last season and with everything currently going on at the club, who have been charged with multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to unpaid wages, he might be looking for an escape route.
Rohl is also on the shortlist to be the next Leicester City boss, according to reports, and is as short as 1/2 for that position on certain betting apps.
Boro Could Consider Challinor
Of those contenders with double-figure prices, talk of a move for 25/1 shot Robbie Keane has been dismissed, but there's a possibility the Tessiders talk to ex-Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil, who is out of work after leaving Wolves last season and is a 12/1 chance.
A new name on the list is Stockport manager Dave Challinor, who has done an outstanding job with the League One side, taking them from the National League up to League One in three seasons. The Hatters reached the League One play-offs last season before they were beaten in the semi-finals by Leyton Orient.
He has also achieved promotion from the National League North with Fylde and promotion back to the EFL with Hartlepool United so he has had success wherever he has been.
Football betting sites are offering 25/1 on him to make the move to the Riverside Stadium but it is nice to see the former Tranmere Rovers and Stockport defender finally getting some recognition.

Newcastle in talks to sign Burnley's James Trafford
Newcastle United have begun direct negotiations with Burnley over the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford with the two clubs still at odds over the asking price. Telegraph Sport revealed last week that Trafford was Newcastle's preferred option as they look to sign a goalkeeper who will provide proper competition for Nick Pope, but they have been stuck in deadlock with Burnley over the size of the fee. There are also some fears internally they are being stalled in the hope that another club, possibly Chelsea, also enters the race to sign a player they have coveted for more than a year. Burnley value the 22-year-old at more than £30 million, but Newcastle, conscious of the fact they need to sign at least another centre back and a forward this summer, have been unwilling to match that so far. Talks remain ongoing but Newcastle have warned they will walk away from negotiations if Burnley refuse to lower the asking price. Trafford is one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in Europe and almost signed for Newcastle last summer, only for the North East club to pull out of the deal because of PSR concerns. Trafford has since hinted he wanted to make the move and there is confidence at Newcastle the England international would still like to make the switch. However, the Newcastle hierarchy are still haunted by the memory of their long and public pursuit of Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi last year. Having spent weeks trying to reach a deal with Palace, they were forced to concede defeat when the asking price remained too high. Newcastle remain interested in the 24-year-old but face competition from Tottenham. There is also a feeling that the defender would like to keep his options open until later in the summer and could even decide to stay at Palace and leave on a lucrative free transfer in the summer of 2026. As a result, Newcastle do not want a repeat with Trafford and have also expressed an interest in Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier as an alternative option. The talks for Trafford have been complicated by the fact that Manchester City, who sold the 6ft 6in goalkeeper to Burnley in 2023, are entitled to a sell-on clause, thought to be 20 per cent. They also retain a buy-back option although they are not thought to be interested in rivalling Newcastle at this stage. Chelsea, though, could enter the bidding as they also admire the goalkeeper. Brighton's Joao Pedro is another priority target for Newcastle and there has been some encouragement that the Brazilian would like to make the move. But progress on the deal is also slow and, again, there is a gap between Newcastle's valuation of the player and the fee Brighton would ask for. Newcastle are also aware of the asking price for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga having spoken to intermediaries, but are yet to make a direct approach to his club. Manager Eddie Howe would like to sign both players, but has so far been frustrated in his attempts to make an early signing this summer.

Henry Arundell returns to England squad
Arundell, who also qualified for Wales and Scotland, scored a memorable try with his very first touch as an England player when he came off the bench against Australia in 2022. After Eddie Jones was fired as England head coach, Arundell continued to appear under Borthwick through the 2023 Six Nations. When London Irish went into administration, there was no shortage of interest in Arundell but he chose to sign for French big spenders Racing 92. Borthwick was given special dispensation to pick him as well as Toulouse's Jack Willis for the 2023 World Cup and Arundell scored a record-equalling five tries against Chile in a pool stage match. Despite that feat, Arundell did not feature again until the bronze-medal match against Argentina, which proved to be his last act in an England shirt as pressure from Premiership Rugby forced the Rugby Football Union to close its loophole on selecting overseas players. However with Arundell set to join Bath this summer, Borthwick has been able to add the 22-year-old to his training squad with England facing a France XV at Twickenham on June 21 before their tour of Argentina and the United States. Arundell returns to a much-changed England side both in terms of personnel and philosophy. At the 2023 World Cup, England relied upon their wings to predominantly chase high balls, which did not suit his skillset. Despite a great start to life in France where he scored a hat-trick on his debut, his experience with Racing 92 has not always been a happy one and at points this season he looked shorn of the confidence he possessed three years ago. Arundell faces strong competition for places in the England back three spots with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Cadan Murley, Ollie Sleightholme and Tom Roebuck already included in a training squad which does not feature any players from Bath or Leicester as well as England's Lions contingent.
