McIlroy shot over par in both weekend rounds to finish outside the top 40.
It culminated in his second-worst major finish since 2023.
The Northern Irishman completed the career grand slam last month at Augusta in The Masters.
He admitted prior to the USPGA that he'd been unable to put in his usual amount of practice.
And he had his favourite driver snatched away from him last week after a random test showed it broke PGA rules.
McIlroy spoke to the media for around 20 minutes ahead of Thursday's first round in Charlotte.
But he didn't appear in front of the TV cameras again for the remainder of the tournament.
CBS reporter Balionis welcomed Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm for interviews after round four on Sunday.
And viewers were convinced she aimed a subtle jibe in Rory's direction at the conclusion.
Balionis signed off to Bryson: "We appreciate the time.
Footage of emotional Rory McIlroy become's internet's biggest meme
"You don't have to take the time so we really appreciate it."
Balionis later appeared to double down on Instagram, posting snaps of her interview with both players.
She wrote: "Appreciate these two for taking the time to talk after a gutting loss.
"Simply a reminder that no one is obligated to talk, it's a choice.
"And to bring us in after coming so close to a career accomplishment is awesome for the viewer."
One fan wrote on X in response: "Amanda with the subtle dig at Rory."
Inside Rory McIlroy's whirlwind love life
RORY MCILROY enjoyed a high-profile romance with former tennis world number one Caroline Wozniacki before their split in 2014.
The following year, the golf ace began dating Erica Stoll, who he had first met on the PGA Tour in 2011.
Erica often interacted with players through her role as the PGA's manager of championship volunteer operations.
She even prevented McIlroy from missing his tee time at the 2012 Ryder Cup after some confusion over the time zone.
The incident began a firm friendship between the pair, four years before their relationship turned romantic.
McIlroy and Erica were spotted on a string of dates in Rochester, New York, in the early days of their relationship.
Just eight months later, the couple got engaged in Paris and walked down the aisle at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017.
The pair then welcomed daughter Poppy into the world three years later.
Throughout their time together, McIlroy and Erica have kept their relationship to themselves, with the golfer keen to protect his family from the cameras during filming of Netflix's Full Swing documentary series.
However, after seven years of marriage, McIlroy filed for divorce from Erica.
The reasons for the divorce were not disclosed, but the Northern Irishman submitted documents to a court in Florida.
However, a few weeks later, performed a U-turn on their decision to divorce.
McIlroy told the outlet: "Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.'
Another said: "I usually defend Rory from all the nonsense takes on Twitter, but yeah this isn't a hill I'll die on. Skipping all four days for any golfer on Tour, especially one of the 'faces' of the sport, isn't right"
While a third added: "The point is the tour should obligate players to do a quick chat, the players have to much control."
But a fourth countered: "Who cares. He had a bad tournament. Maybe it's better to not say anything then to regret what you want to say."
Scottie Scheffler proved too strong for the field as the American won his third major.
The 28-year-old dominated on Day 4, eventually winning by five shots.

Mel B and Eddie Murphy's relationship 'flourished' co-parenting their trans son Angel, 18, who is revealed to have a girlfriend - years after the actor and dad of TEN denied he was the father in vicious paternity battle

Mel B and ex Eddie Murphy 's once contentious relationship 'flourished' co-parenting their child Angel, who revealed this week that he has changed his pronouns and is living as a trans man. The 18-year-old, who the Spice Girl confirmed had a girlfriend, started life in the glare of the public spotlight after the Nutty Professor star, 64, denied he was the father which lead to a bitter paternity battle and years of estrangement. Angel, who was born female, has changed the biographical detail on his personal Instagram account and wants to be referred to as 'him', with sources telling MailOnline the teen had been supported in their decision by both parents. Mel, 50, told US Weekly last month: '[Angel and Eddie] spend time together, they go on holiday together. He has ten kids he's a proper father. I think being in the kind of [situation] that I was in, it was hard for me to step out and have that relationship [with Eddie] flourish,' referring to her 'abusive' marriage to ex-husband Stephen Belafonte. Allegations he denies. Scary Spice, who is now engaged to Rory McPhee, said she's learned to to co-parent with the Shrek star 'bit by bit' and admitted their friendship has ' flourished even more' as their son has grown up. Angel, who was born female, has changed the biographical detail on his personal Instagram account and wants to be referred to as 'him', with sources telling MailOnline the teen had been supported in their decision by both parents Gushing about Angel, who she referred to as male a month before he made his trans identity public, Mel told the publication: 'He went to Japan last year with his girlfriend and just embraced the whole Japanese vibe, he speaks fluent Japanese and he knows exactly what he wants to do and where he wants to go'. Eddie is also father to Eric, 35, with ex Paulette McNeely; Bria, 35, Myles, 32, Shayne, 30, Zola, 25, and Bella, 23, with ex-wife Nicole Murphy; Christian, 34, with ex Tamara Hood; as well as nine-year-old Izzy, nine, and six-year-old Max, with second wife Paige Butcher. Mel and Eddie first met at a party at his Beverly Hills mansion in 2006 and according to the Wannabe hitmaker he had planned a 'massive dinner party' to meet her. When the pair first locked eyes on each other across the room, Mel said she 'freaked out' because he gazed at her with such familiarity she could 'see my soulmate'. The couple went on to shock fans with their unlikely coupling, which appeared to end as quickly as it started before the singer, who was already mum to daughter Phoenix, now 26, with ex Jimmy Gulzar, announced she was pregnant. Mel said things turned sour after she fell pregnant and she fled to Leeds in the hope Eddie would follow her to win her back. However he told a journalist in a TV interview he questioned if he was the father would need a paternity test. However during a 2019 appearance on Piers Morgan's Life Stories, Mel said: '[Eddie] apologises to this day about that. He wishes he never said it because that baby was planned; we planned that baby together, and we were madly in love, and it just went wrong, dramatically went wrong.' Reflecting on the relationship she told the host: 'We had something special that I've never really truly felt with anybody else. I've thought I've had it, but they've lied. His [Love] was pure. He is the love of my life. He always will be. He showed me what true love feels like, and for that I have the utmost admiration and respect for him.' Writing in her 2018 memoir Brutally Honest the pop star once again claimed the pair's relationship lasted for far longer and was more meaningful than had previously been suggested. She also claimed that it was her who forced Murphy to take the DNA test in order for him to acknowledge their child. During their time together, Mel also wrote how the star would play old Elvis movies and films like Blazing Saddles and also speak about his childhood in projects in New York, where he and his older brother Charlie were partly brought up in foster care at a time when their mother was ill. 'He was fascinating to me. He'd had a life I couldn't imagine,' writes Mel. During his estrangement from his biological father, Angel was raised by his mother's second husband Stephan Belfonte, who was accused of being abusive and controlling during the relationship. In 2018 Mel's mother Andrea Brown has shared a distressing letter on Twitter, which she claimed was written by a then 10-year-old Angel about the abuse the film producer allegedly inflicted on the family. Andrea uploaded the handwritten letter, captioning the post: 'A cry for help', amid Mel custody battle with Stephen. The three-page letter details abuse the Spice Girls star allegedly suffered at the hands of her ex husband, which Angel and sisters reportedly witnessed. The letter said Stephen put the family through a 'nightmare' and Angel allegedly never wanted to see him again, despite once calling him 'Dad'. The letter read: 'I'm very frightened of Stephen. When he is mad its terrifying. I never want to see him ever again it'd be like reliving a horrible part of my life. The worst part about the times I lived with him is when I'd try to stop the fights and cursing. When I tried he would say 'oh shut up' and I would be so scared I wouldn't say anything else.' 'I witnessed a physical fight. I was lying down in my mother's room 'sleeping'. I woke up to a fight,' 'I can't remember what it was about, but I heard Stephen hitting mommys hand, it was hard cause I heard it. Mommy said 'you snapped my nail off' so it was hard.' In 2018 Mel's mother Andrea Brown has shared a distressing letter on Twitter, which she claimed was written by a then 10-year-old Angel about the abuse 'I attempted to fake sleep cause I didn't want to interfere and get hurt. I don't want to see the man that causes so much damage to my mother leading her living through a nightmare.' The letter claimed that Stephen's daughter Giselle told Angel that Eddie was her dad when she was five, adding: 'Extremely proud of that. I got an amazing relationship with my sisters, brothers, grandma and my father Eddie Murphy!'. The letter continued: 'When I lived with Stephen the rules were the strictest. When we ate food we had to sit on the floor instead of the dinner table. He said we would make a mess on the table. I wondered of you make a mess on the dinner table you just clean it up? What's the point of having a dinner table if you don't eat on it? 'Stephen never came into my room and when I say never is N.E.V.E.R he was to busy on his computer. I'm happy I don't see him any more. Now I live in a beautiful house and wait when I lived with Stephen I could never get a dog and guess what! It went on: 'Now I have two dogs and a goat! We can eat up an actual dinner table and I can see my REAL dad. I create small picture books and I have no more fear. I love seeing my real dad! And I loved seeing my mother happy! Not sad! Please don't make me see him again – ps Angel.' That same year, Stephen, who shares daughter Madison, 12, applied for step visitation to see Angel, with his lawyers claiming Eddie was simply 'not interested' in having contact with his child. Mel, who was pregnant with Angel when she began dating Stephen, repaired her previously strained relationship with her mother Andrea after the split. Stephen denies the claims Mel has made against him and last year filed a £3.9million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife. Mel's legal team asked for the case to be thrown out, but it has been denied, The Mirror reported.

Ex-NFL star running for Congress slams Simone Biles over Riley Gaines trans feud

Simone Biles ' stance on transgender athletes in women's sports puts biological females in 'dangerous and compromising situations', says former NFL kicker-turned politician Jay Feely. Feely, who is set to run for Congress in Arizona, has weighed in on the shock trans feud that broke out between Biles and conservative political activist Riley Gaines over the weekend. The Olympic legend sparked controversy on Friday night by attacking Gaines over her protests against trans athletes competing in women's sports, writing on X: 'bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male @Riley_Gaines_'. She then added: '@Riley_Gaines_ You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser. You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!' Gaines, a former college swimmer who was forced to compete against trans athlete Lia Thomas in 2022, has since fired back at Biles, even unearthing an old post from the American gymnast in 2017 where she appeared to criticize the idea of biological males in women's sports. Men don't belong in women's sports! @Simone_Biles argument is the antithesis of title 9 and equal opportunity it's provided for women. It puts girls in dangerous, compromising situations so a man pretending to be a woman can feel better about themselves. @Riley_Gaines_ worked… — Jay Feely (@jayfeely) June 7, 2025 A number of high-profile figures have given their take on the dispute, including Feely - who claims Biles would not have won any Olympic medals if she had to compete against trans gymnasts. 'Men don't belong in women's sports! @Simone_Biles argument is the antithesis of title 9 and equal opportunity it's provided for women. It puts girls in dangerous, compromising situations so a man pretending to be a woman can feel better about themselves,' the ex-football star said on X. '@Riley_Gaines_ worked her whole life, earned a NCAA championship, and had it taken away by a man who wouldn't have even placed if he competed with the other men. 'Simone doesn't win any medal if she competes against men. Serena Williams doesn't win any tournaments if she competes against men. They are the best ever to do it. Why should we compromise with our high school and college girls and take away their opportunities.' Like Feely, former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick has also sided with Gaines amid her spat with Biles over trans athletes in women's sports. Patrick said the gymnast had been 'red pilled' in reference to being fed the wrong information. 'This issue has a shelf life. I truly believe common sense will prevail. But until then, I am grateful for people like Riley Gaines who are making sure no one gets away with it,' she said on Instagram. 'Not to mention the fact that she actually lived it. Defending men in women's sports is the woke mind virus and/or another issue that requires therapy. Either way, it is so irrational.' Gaines responded by unearthing an old post where the Olympics legend argued differently Biles has yet to make any additional comments since her shock outburst towards Gaines on Friday night. The latter has forged a career as a political commentator for OutKick and Fox following her time as a swimmer. Her campaigning has won praise from Donald Trump, who welcomed her to the White House before signing the 'Keeping Men out of Women's Sports' executive order in February. On Friday, Gaines initially retweeted a picture of Minnesota team Champlin Park celebrating the state high school title that they won with transgender pitcher Marissa Rothenberger on the team. 'Comments off lol,' she wrote in response to the post. 'To be expected when your star player is a boy.' That sparked the blistering response from Biles where she first slammed Gaines' view before comparing her appearance to a man.
