Recaps and results from this week's 4A SPSL fastpitch softball tournament around the South Sound.
SEMIFINALS
EMERALD RIDGE 2, GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN 1
Alanna Wirtala threw a one-run complete game, Jayda Guadron plated both Emerald Ridge runs, and the Jaguars outlasted Graham-Kapowsin, 2-1, in Tuesday's 4A SPSL semifinals.
Guadron's RBI double in the third inning and go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh were enough run support for the standout Wirtala, who allowed one run (none earned) with six strikeouts over seven strong frames.
'(Alanna) was unbelievable,' Jaguars coach Adam Schakel said. 'I mean, you know the old saying, right? Big-time players step up in big-time games. This was a performance by her.'
Graham-Kapowsin's Jessika Jennings matched Wirtala's complete game in a pitcher's duel, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while walking two and striking out nine.
The Eagles mustered their only run in the third inning when Izzy Vargas' RBI single scored Marley McDaniel.
Emerald Ridge meets Rogers or Sumner in Thursday's 4A SPSL championship. All four semifinalists are through to the district bracket.
'The kids feel like they can win,' Schakel said. 'They're confident that whoever they play, they've got a chance to win, and they trust each other.
'If your bat's not working, then turn the page and go play defense. And that happened today.'

Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among position group?

Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among position group? Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among his position group heading into the 2025 NFL season? Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among his position group heading into the 2025 NFL season? Pro Football Focus has been putting together its ranking of the top 32 players at each position group. At the guard spot, Mason Cameron had Hainsey at No. 23 on his list. "While we haven't seen much of Hainsey over the past year, he did show flashes on a small sample size, posting a 73.3 PFF overall grade," wrote Cameron. "That should be a positive step toward a return to form in Jacksonville." With the addition of Graham Barton by the Buccaneers in last year's NFL draft, Hainsey played just 94 snaps in 2024 coming off the bench. However, as GM James Gladstone described following the addition of Hainsey in free agency, there were two things about his game that stood out and made him a player that the Jaguars had to sign. One facet is that he knows Liam Coen's offense after the two worked together while in Tampa Bay last season. As Gladstone put it, Hainsey's familiarity with the system "takes some weight off the shoulders" of Trevor Lawrence at the line of scrimmage. The other part of Hainsey's game that grabbed Gladstone's attention was his play style. "The whistle blows and he's playing through it, and that's something that we really, really value," Gladstone said. The Jaguars signed Hainsey to a three-year, $21 million deal with $13 million guaranteed.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars WR retiring after 10 NFL seasons to pursue new career

Former Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiver Chris Conley is retiring from the NFL after 10 seasons. According to Ian Rapoport, Conley is going back to school at Georgia to pursue his dreams of being a filmmaker. Conley was a third-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs out of Georgia in the 2015 NFL draft. He played with five different teams over his career, which includes two years in Jacksonville in 2019 and 2020. Advertisement As a member of the Jaguars, Conley appeared in 31 games and made 18 starts. He caught 87 passes for 1,246 yards with seven touchdowns, according to PFF. Conley's 2019 season with the Jaguars was the most productive of his career, where he totaled 775 receiving yards at 16.5 yards per catch with five scores. Conley finished his playing career, appearing in 132 games and making 65 starts. He caught 226 passes for 2,998 yards with 15 touchdowns. He spent his last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, where he took on a larger role on special teams. Steelers To Host Gabe Davis on Free Agent Visit

Steelers To Host Gabe Davis on Free Agent Visit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers' offense has fluctuated throughout the offseason. It entered March with quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields lingering as options, but watched both depart in free agency. They traded for receiver DK Metcalf and dealt his co-star, George Pickens, away after the NFL Draft. All the while, the fate of quarterback Aaron Rodgers has left the Steelers in limbo. Advertisement After Pickens was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, it became clear that 2026 is a priority, and that 2025 will likely look an awful lot like the rest of the post-Ben Roethlisberger era. But there's still work to do to maximize their chances this season, and as free agency slows to a crawl, a handful of veterans remain available. Pittsburgh could use further insulation at receiver, particularly opposite Metcalf on the perimeter. On Tuesday, the front office took a step toward addressing the issue. According to Adam Schefter, the Steelers will host potential starting receiver Gabe Davis on a free-agent visit on Thursday. Davis is coming off the worst year of his career, which culminated in his release from the Jacksonville Jaguars with a failed physical designation. His torn meniscus limited him to just 10 games. In a rudderless Jaguars offense laden with coaching miscues and quarterback changes, Davis managed just 20 catches for 239 yards and two scores. Advertisement Still, it isn't hard to find an optimistic outlook on Davis' game. With the Buffalo Bills, Davis scored 27 touchdowns over the four-year duration of his rookie contract. After two 500-yard campaigns, he took a step forward and posted 836 and 746 yards in 2022 and 2023, respectively. He did so without ever touching 50 receptions in a season. Davis does his best work as a vertical field stretcher whose frame and catch-point prowess make him a threat downfield. That is fairly synonymous with Metcalf, so it's entirely possible that a signing would make him the backup X receiver rather than the starting Z option. Even so, if he's healthy, there's a reasonable chance he improves the receiving corps. Davis' skill set is limited. But if Pittsburgh is just asking him to play for his strengths, the occasional splash play could elevate a concerning passing offense. Schefter also noted that the Steelers checked in on, but are not pursuing, Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith.
