Titanic director James Cameron warns of ‘Terminator-style' AI weapons threat

Daily Mirror7 hours ago
Oscar-winning director James Cameron has warned that the dystopian future he imagined in The Terminator may no longer be confined to fiction as AI takes over.

The filmmaker raised fears that artificial intelligence could soon control military systems, including nuclear weapons. The Canadian filmmaker, 70, told Rolling Stone magazine that an arms race relying on AI presents a 'dangerous' scenario that could spiral beyond human control.

His comments came as he promoted the new book Ghosts of Hiroshima, which he plans to adapt into a feature film.

'I do think there's still a danger of a 'Terminator'-style apocalypse where you put AI together with weapons systems, even up to the level of nuclear weapon systems, nuclear defence counterstrike, all that stuff,' Cameron said. 'Because the theatre of operations is so rapid, the decision windows are so fast, it would take a super-intelligence to be able to process it, and maybe we'll be smart and keep a human in the loop.
'But humans are fallible, and there have been a lot of mistakes made that have put us right on the brink of international incidents that could have led to nuclear war. So I don't know.'

The Avatar and Titanic director, whose 1984 hit The Terminator featured a self-aware AI system named Skynet launching nuclear Armageddon, said the convergence of today's crises, from climate change to AI, should be taken seriously. 'I feel like we're at this cusp in human development where you've got the three existential threats: climate and our overall degradation of the natural world, nuclear weapons, and super-intelligence,' he continued.
'They're all sort of manifesting and peaking at the same time. Maybe the super-intelligence is the answer. I don't know. I'm not that, but it might be.'
Cameron's concerns about AI are longstanding.

In a viral 2023 interview, he poured cold water on the idea that artificial intelligence could replace human screenwriters, saying: 'I just don't personally believe that a disembodied mind that's just regurgitating what other embodied minds have said, about the life that they've had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality , and just put it all together into a word salad and then regurgitate it… I don't believe that's ever going to have something that's going to move an audience. You have to be human to write that. I don't know anyone that's even thinking about having AI write a screenplay.'
Despite his reservations, Cameron has embraced certain uses of AII, particularly in relation to the spiralling cost of filmmaking. In September 2024, he joined the board of Stability AI, the firm behind the image-generation tool Stable Diffusion.
Speaking on a podcast earlier this year, he outlined how he believes AI could help reduce production budgets without eliminating human jobs. 'If we want to continue to see the kinds of movies that I've always loved and that I like to make and that I will go to see, Dune, Dune: Part Two, or one of my films or big effects-heavy, CG-heavy films, we've got to figure out how to cut the cost in half,' he said.
'Now that's not about laying off half the staff at the effects company. That's about doubling their speed to completion on a given shot, so your cadence is faster and your throughput cycle is faster, and artists get to move on and do other cool things and then other cool things, right? That's my sort of vision for that.'

The Office fans blindsided by shock cameo in upcoming spin-off

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The Office fans have been left surprised and delighted as Oscar Martinez makes a return in the new spin-off – The Paper. The Office may have ended 12 years ago, but in the era of remakes and reboots, it's no surprise a spin-off is set to come out with a whole new host of kooky characters. The synopsis for the mockumentary-style show explains: 'The series follows the Dunder Mifflin documentary crew as they focus on a dying Midwestern newspaper & its reporters.' As the new trailer shows, the comedy stars Black Mirror actor Domhnall Gleeson as the plucky new editor-in-chief Ned Sampson, who is saddled with seven poorer-than-poor local news reporters behind the Toledo Truth Teller. The fresh cast also includes White Lotus favourite Sabrina Impacciatore, US star Melvin Gregg and comedian Tim Key. One character fans weren't expecting, however, was the return of Oscar (portrayed by Oscar Nunez), who seems to have gone from bottom-of-the-barrel job to… even more bottom-of-the-barrel job. He appears at the very end of the trailer – filled with quips about the dying media industry – as he takes a jab at the film crew. 'Not again, I'm not agreeing to any of this. I will make this unusable,' he says as he swears to the camera. Sceptical fans seem to have been won over by his appearance and are ready to give the show a try. 'My baddie is back, love Oscar,' babylonstargirl wrote on X. 'Oscar is back!!!' aewliquid added. 'What's Oscar doing here?? I haven't seen the ending of the office in a while, does he go off to work for a newspaper??' Tanner_Slavin asked. 'Wasn't feeling it .. then I saw Oscar,' ehimgood shared. 'I hate the fact that I don't hate this. Also Oscar at the end is hilarious,' seminole4life22 said. 'I wasn't totally sold until the reveal at the end. I'll give it a shot,' crawf34 echoed. 'OSCAR jsjsks I'm going to give it a chance especially for Domhnall Gleeson, I missed his face,' melina declared. Fans were equally excited to see the About Time star at the helm of the show. 'I'm a Domhall Gleeson believer since About Time so I might tune in…,' royden ogletree posted. 'Domhnall Gleeson and Tim Key give me hope,' theamazingchi added. 'GLEESON HIVE RISE ITS OUR TIME' madeline shared. And there is more general excitement with Chris Evans saying it 'should be fun' and Caleb Smith saying he was 'cautiously optimistic'. The Irish actor has big shoes to fill with The Office's mammoth legacy – especially with beloved characters like Steve Carell's Michael Scott and Ricky Gervais's David Brent. More Trending But Gleeson feels confident Ned will carve out his own reputation among fans. He told People: 'I don't think my characters like Michael Scott at all. I think if you're trying to compete with what Steve did or with what Ricky Gervais did, I think it would be a massive mistake. 'They are geniuses who are incredible in loads of different ways. We made a whole new character. And it's a whole new sort of set up, but I hope people will find a reason to love him as well, just in a different way than they did the guys before.' Thursday Murder Club trailer offers first look at David Tennant's character

The adaptation, based on the book series by game show host and author Richard Osman, follows a crime-busting group of retirees, played by: Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren; former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan; Calendar Girls actress Celia Imrie; and Gandhi star, Sir Ben Kingsley. Director Chris Columbus confirmed in an interview with entertainment news website Collider in April that Doctor Who star Tennant, 54, would play Ian, the owner of Coopers Chase retirement village, where the four retirees live, with Olivier-winning actor Sir Jonathan, 78, starring as Stephen, the husband of Dame Helen's character, Elizabeth. The trailer, which follows the release of a teaser in May, features a clip of Tennant with slicked back hair and a Dolce and Gabbana T-shirt looking angry. In another clip his character says: 'I'm not worried about the cantankerous old farts.' Meanwhile, Sir Jonathan is shown wearing a brown cardigan, blue shirt and glasses in his role as Elizabeth's husband, who suffers from dementia in the book. Among the other cast members are: Saltburn star Richard E Grant; Miranda's Tom Ellis; Mickey 17 actress Naomi Ackie; Line Of Duty star Daniel Mays; and Indian Summers actor, Henry Lloyd-Hughes. The trailer also shows Elizabeth, Ibrahim (Sir Ben) and Ron (Brosnan), introducing themselves as the Thursday Murder Club to Imrie's character, Joyce, an ex-nurse who becomes the latest member of the group. Ackie, who plays a police constable, is seen investigating as is May's character who says: 'Police work is off-limits to anyone who isn't the police.' Elsewhere, Elizabeth receives a bouquet of flowers telling her to 'back off' and she is later seen bumping into a mysterious figure in the dead of night who tells her to not 'wake the dead.' Harry Potter director Columbus said: 'This is the finest cast I've worked with since Potter. 'They're just so incredibly well-prepared, and it's because they do everything. They do theatre, they do television, they do film, and they've developed those sorts of muscles.' Osman has written four Thursday Murder Club books with a fifth, The Impossible Fortune, set for publication in September. The TV star, 54, who became a household name on Pointless, left the hit TV quiz show in 2022 to concentrate on writing, having co-hosted alongside Alexander Armstrong since its debut in 2009. The Thursday Murder Club will land on Netflix on August 28.
