X hits pause on its encrypted DMs feature
In Brief
Social network X said on Thursday that it is pausing its encrypted DMs feature as it works to make some improvements.
In a post on X, the company's engineering account said users will be able to access their existing encrypted messages, but they won't be able to send new ones. It did not mention when the feature will be available again.
After Elon Musk bought Twitter, he announced ambitious plans to overhaul direct messages and compete with privacy-focused messaging service Signal.
The company rolled out the encrypted DMs feature in 2023 for verified users, but it comes with several drawbacks. For instance, the feature isn't available for group chats, and only supports encryption for text and links, not media. It also does not offer protections against man-in-the-middle attacks, and your encrypted conversations do not carry over to new devices.

New Tesla sales in Spain, Portugal fall in May, while other EV sales soar
MADRID (Reuters) -Tesla's new car sales in Spain and Portugal fell in May from the same month in 2024, registration data released by industry groups in both countries showed on Monday, while sales of electric cars from other brands soared. The U.S. EV maker sold 794 cars in Spain and 292 cars in Portugal in May, year-on-year drops of 29% and 68%, respectively. Over the first five months of 2025, sales of Tesla cars in Spain fell 19% from the same period of 2024. Total sales of electrified vehicles, a category that includes both fully electric vehicles and hybrids, were up 72%, ANFAC said. New Tesla sales in the first five months of the year fell 36% in Portugal, the country's automobile industry association ACAP said. Sales of Tesla cars have continued to fall in Europe as CEO Elon Musk's embrace of far-right parties puts off buyers, adding to pressure from a limited range of models and increased competition from European and Chinese brands. Musk left U.S. President Donald Trump's administration last week. He has said he will resume working '24/7' at his companies. In Spain, sales of Chinese automakers BYD, MG and Omoda were up 745%, 87% and 213%, respectively, so far this year, ANFAC's report showed. Weather Now: Warmer, bright today; Big warmup ahead
Good morning, everyone, and happy Monday! After a fairly nice weekend (besides a few showers on Saturday) we're looking to keep the nice weather going through much of this week. In fact, we'll be feeling more like summer towards mid-week… more on that below. A cool start to the day with temperatures in the 40s and 50s… but we'll warm up into the low 70s during the afternoon. You may want the kids to wear a light jacket on the way to school, but they won't need it this afternoon. Afternoon highs top out in the upper 60s and low 70s with lots of sunshine Coastal areas will be a touch cooler, but overall still a nice day is expected Perhaps not quite beach weather yet… but that may change later this week! Pollen counts remain medium to high this week with dry and warm temperatures. Inland highs reach the 80s for Wednesday, with coastal areas staying in the 70s. The warmest (or hottest) day of the week looks to fall on Thursday as inland high temperatures could reach the upper 80s with 'feels like' temperatures in the 90s. You'll want to be sure you have a way to stay cool and hydrated. If you thought May was really rainy… well, you're not wrong. We actually finished May in the top 5 of rainiest Mays with 8.05 inches… making 2025 the 3rd rainiest May. Steven Matregrano (smatregrano@ is the weekend morning meteorologist for 12 News.
