
'Forever' chemical that is toxic to humans found in five Welsh rivers
Research suggests the chemicals could have an affect on human reproduction

A chemical that scientists worry might have an impact on human reproduction has been found in rivers across the UK, including five rivers in Wales.
York University analysed samples from 32 rivers across Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and found traces of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in all but one of their test locations. TFA is what's known as a "forever chemical" which means that it breaks down extremely slowly in nature, and so accumulates over time.
As with other "forever chemicals", also known as PFAS, just how much a threat to human health and at what concentrations is still being researched. Though what we do know is that scientists in Germany say having looked at the impact of TFA on animals they want it to be classed as "toxic for reproduction."
TFA forms when synthetic chemicals from other "forever chemicals" such as those found in pesticides and refrigerants are partially broken down.
"This molecule (TFA) is everywhere," Alistair Boxall, professor of Environmental Science at the University of York who carried out the research, told the BBC.
"We will all be drinking water containing TFA every day - so we'll be exposed throughout our lifetime. It's that long-term, low level exposure that is the big concern."

The study was funded by environmental charity Fidras and involved sampling in five rivers in Wales, three in Northern Ireland, 14 in Scotland and 10 in the north of England.
The highest concentration of TFA was recorded on the River Kelvin in Glasgow and the River Ness, which flows from Loch Ness to the Moray Firth, was the only river sampled not to show traces of the molecule.
Recent studies in the EU have found TFA to be widespread, including being found in wine and food, human blood and breast milk.
Citing scientific studies that showed TFA affecting rabbit and rat foetuses, the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) has, external applied to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA, external) for TFA to be classified as toxic for reproduction and harmful to the environment.
"Currently, there are no expected adverse health effects from consuming water or food contaminated with TFA," said Andreas Hensel, president of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). "The new classification is an important step in preparing further measures to ensure that this remains the case in the future".
There are not any regulations in place to identify or reduce the concentrations of TFA either in the environment or in drinking water supplies in the UK.
A spokesperson for Water UK said: "We want to see PFAS, including TFA, banned and the development of a national plan to remove it from the environment which should be paid for by manufacturers."
Aware of concerns, the Drinking Water Inspectorate, which monitors and regulates drinking water quality in England and Wales, has just commissioned its own research.
It will look at how much TFA is already in drinking water and what risk it poses, if any.

"The information signposted by the University of York suggests that TFA can be formed from the degradation of PFAS-containing pesticides," Ann Bunting, Principal Inspector of the Drinking Water Inspectorate, told the BBC.
"It is important that the fate of pesticides and other chemicals in the environment is understood, in order to protect drinking water sources."

Solar farm plans could help revive Gwent Levels and local wildlife
The Gwent Levels—a unique and historically rich wetland landscape—faces two major threats: climate change and intensive farming practices. Climate change is already reshaping the UK's environment through extreme weather events, from droughts to record-breaking rainfall. 2025, for example, saw one of the driest starts to the year on record. These dramatic shifts place huge pressure on wildlife, particularly species reliant on stable, wetland ecosystems. The second threat is more complex. Welsh farmers today face unprecedented financial pressures due to rising energy and fuel costs. In the struggle to remain viable, many turn to intensive farming methods—practices that often rely on chemical pesticides and fertilisers. These can run off into nearby watercourses, damaging the very ecosystems that make the Gwent Levels a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Monoculture farming also provides little space for biodiversity, particularly for insects, birds, and amphibians that depend on more varied, undisturbed contrast, solar farms—when carefully planned and managed—offer a powerful opportunity to restore biodiversity. At Craig Y Perthi, for example, the project includes over 129 acres of permanent wildflower meadows (equivalent to 81 football pitches), planted with species such as red clover and bird's-foot trefoil to support the native Shrill Carder Bee and other vital pollinators associated with the Gwent Levels SSSI. By eliminating pesticide use on these sites, conditions improve dramatically for a wide range of insects, which in turn provide a vital foraging opportunity for birds, bats, and small mammals. Recent studies from Lancaster University[1] and Cambridge University[2] (in partnership with the RSPB) confirm that solar farms can significantly boost populations of pollinators and farmland birds compared to nearby arable plots. Tree and hedgerow planting is another key feature. The Craig Y Perthi scheme includes over 11.3km of new hedgerows, enhancing habitat connectivity for bats and birds while utilising existing farm gates for access to minimise disruption to existing hedging on-site. The Gwent Levels are already in decline under the current 'do-nothing' scenario. Ground-nesting birds like the lapwing, once a more common sight, have seen sharp declines due to habitat loss and farming intensification. In the area proposed for the Craig Y Perthi site, lapwing numbers fell by 62% between 2021 and 2024 alone[3]—mirroring the wider picture of decline; since 1967 UK lapwing numbers have dropped by 55%[4]. Figure 3 - An operational RWE site in Leicestershire with a wildflower mix growing in the foreground between the hedge and the deer fence To address this, the proposed Craig Y Perthi solar project includes a 30-acre parcel of land specifically designed to support lapwing breeding, protected with predator fencing and seeded with appropriate vegetation. Monitoring from the nearby Llanwern solar farm, required as part of the site's planning permission, has shown some encouraging results. Adaptive land management strategies are already improving outcomes for invertebrates—an essential component of the SSSI's ecological value. Furthermore, concerns over water pollution linked to solar installations have been addressed: monitoring has shown no evidence that nearby water quality issues were caused by the solar farm. The Welsh Government also commissioned a desktop assessment of existing development in the levels, which provided further food for thought. Solar energy is a crucial part of Wales' transition to a low-carbon future. But it's not just about climate change—these projects also offer a rare opportunity to reverse biodiversity loss. When planned with care, solar farms can replace low-diversity monocultures with rich habitats, free from chemicals and tailored to the needs of wildlife. 'It's simply not accurate to label solar farms as inherently harmful to the Gwent Levels,' Johnson explains. 'When done right, they could be the very key to preserving this extraordinary landscape for future generations.' Robin Johnson is a trained ecologist and a member of the Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management. Having worked for a number of wildlife conservation charities, he currently works for RWE on schemes such as the Craig Y Perthi, a 99.9MW solar farm proposed on mostly poor-quality farmland between the M4 and the Llanwern Steel works, and adjacent to the village of Bishton in Newport. A planning application for the scheme was submitted to Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) in April 2024, had hearings in March 2025 with a decision expected in late 2025. The plans are being brought forward by Wales' largest renewable energy generator, RWE, and would generate enough affordable, renewable energy to meet the equivalent needs of around 45,374 Welsh homes per annum, saving over 3,180,000 tonnes of CO2 in the process - the equivalent of planting over 52 million trees[5]. Councillors raised the alert after discovering faecal bacteria in the waters off West Shore beach in Llandudno. Data from Surfers Against Sewage reveals more than 50 discharges from the local Dale Road storm overflow have occurred over the past three months. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) carries out regular pollution monitoring of the waters, with Conwy councillors receiving an update on their latest findings on Monday, August 18. Following the briefing, Cllr Louise Emery from Llandudno's Gogarth Ward took to social media to alert residents and tourists: "Don't swim at West Shore!" She continued: "I received notification from the council this afternoon that recent bathing water samples are not up to standard and people are advised not to swim off the West Shore beach. "Signs should be already down there but please pass the message onto your networks. The council will be updated via Natural Resources Wales when more water samples are taken." Cllr Louise Emery was keen to share the message with locals Article continues below Gogarth Mostyn representative Cllr Harry Saville reported that testing had detected "high levels" of intestinal Enterococci. Such bacteria is usually found in animals, including humans, and their detection in the Conwy estuary suggests potential contamination from sewage waste. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water suggested the discharge figures might have been affected by a "false reading" and indicated any pollution incident could have started further upstream in the estuary. The estuary's catchment extends around 15.5 miles (25km) to Betws-y-Coed, meaning it's liable to capture seepage from sheep farming, forestry and old metal mines and sewage network overflows. Two storm overflows discharge near West Shore itself, with the Dale Road storm overflow discharging 53 times in the past three months, including notably long episodes on June 14 and May 28. Councillor Saville shared his concern, stating: "I'm very concerned that Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru/Natural Resources Wales has requested that the public are advised against bathing or paddling at West Shore due to high levels of Intestinal Enterococci found in a recent water sample. I believe that signage is due to be displayed to that effect." "West Shore is popular with locals and visitors. It's essential that NRW and other stakeholders get a grip of this problem quickly." Over the past two years, NRW has downgraded West Shore's bathing quality from "excellent" to "good". A four-year sampling period (2021-2024) found trace amounts of sewage debris on less than 10% of visits, and trace amounts of animal faeces on a minority of occasions. Litter was found more frequently with traces were found on over half of all visits. According to Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, an intricate system of pumping stations functions at West Shore. One of these handles Afon Creuddyn, a covered waterway that flows through Llandudno and emerges at the Dale Road overflow. Occasional discharges here typically consist of surface water alone, the company explained. Heavy rainfall may trigger releases containing a heavily diluted blend of wastewater and rainwater but Dŵr Cymru emphasised that environmental regulations permit this. A spokesperson said: "Our storm overflows did not operate on the day the sample was taken, or in the preceding days. This suggests the high levels of bacteria detected in this sample originate from another source of which there are many, including agricultural sources, septic tanks and animal faeces. "We're also investigating if our pumping station at Dale Road has a sensor fault which might have given false readings, showing it was discharging when it wasn't. "All other bathing water samples taken by NRW this season have met the 'excellent' threshold for bathing water quality." During the next five years, the firm plans to invest £4bn enhancing its infrastructure. This will include £889m to improve storm overflows and an additional £42m on bettering bathing and shellfish waters at eight locations. This occurs when homeowners mistakenly connect waste water pipes to surface water drains, rather than the foul water sewerage system, despite numerous campaigns to rectify this.

Vaping in childhood ‘gateway to cannabis and cigarettes'
Vaping in childhood is a 'gateway' to cannabis and cigarettes, according to a study. Experts found 'consistent evidence' that children who vape are three times more likely to go on to become smokers. They also found links to abuse of substances, including alcohol and cannabis, as well as a higher likelihood of developing asthma and mental health problems. The researchers, from the University of York and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), analysed all the existing available reviews on youth vaping – also known as an umbrella review – which included 56 reviews on 384 studies. Some 21 of these looked at the use of e-cigarettes among young people and later cigarette smoking. The research found vapers were also more likely to smoke more frequently and intensely, and develop breathing problems. Other harmful links to youth vaping included pneumonia, bronchitis, lower total sperm counts, dizziness, headaches and migraines. There was also a link identified between depression and suicidal thoughts among young vapers. It appears to confirm long-held beliefs about the risk of vaping, with US research going as far back as 2017 suggesting vaping acts as a gateway to smoking, after finding teenagers who used e-cigarettes were four times more likely to start using tobacco within a year, according to the University of Michigan. Dr Rebecca Glover, senior author of the study and assistant professor at LSHTM, said: 'Vaping is having a detrimental impact on the health of young people globally and vaping appears to be a gateway to other substances. 'Our study provides the strongest evidence to date that young people globally face a serious range of physical and psychological harms from vaping and are at higher risk of transitioning to smoking.' Writing in the journal Tobacco Control, the authors said the data 'consistently indicated a significant association between e-cigarette use and later cigarette smoking in young people'. They said it was difficult to 'infer causality' from their review, but said the 'repeated strong associations in prospective cohort studies are consistent with a causal relationship'. Dr Su Golder, an associate professor in health science at the University of York, said: 'The consistency in the evidence is striking. Across multiple studies, young people who use e-cigarettes are more likely to smoke in the future.' Dr Greg Hartwell, clinical assistant professor at LSHTM, said the transition to smoking 'opens the door to the multitude of harms that conventional cigarettes bring'. 'As the Government's chief medical officer states, marketing vapes to children is always unacceptable, and our review shows exactly why further restrictions on the tobacco industry, who control the vaping market, are so important,' he added. In June, a ban on disposable vapes was introduced, in part to curb their use among young people. The crackdown on the devices, also known as single-use vapes, makes it illegal for any retailer, from corner shops to supermarkets, to sell them. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will seek to further limit the vapes appeal to children, by restricting flavours and marketing strategies. Dr Stephen Burgess, a statistician at the University of Cambridge. who was not involved in the research, said the review looked at observational studies and so 'can say that vaping users are more likely to engage in certain behaviours, but whether vaping is truly a cause of these behaviours is beyond the scope of the data'. 'However, the associations demonstrated are both extensive in scope and strong in magnitude – it is clear that vaping users are at higher risk of many diseases than non-users,' he added.
