DMW orders closure of visa consulting firm over illegal recruitment
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has ordered the immediate shutdown of Visa to America Manila, Inc., a private visa consulting firm operating across the Philippines, over alleged illegal recruitment activities. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Undersecretary Bernard Olalia led the enforcement of the closure order at the company's main office in Ortigas, Pasig City. Simultaneous operations were also conducted in its seven other branches located in Quezon City, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Davao City, Zamboanga City, Santiago City in Isabela, and in Washington D.C., United States. According to the DMW, the firm was engaged in recruitment for overseas employment without the necessary license. It had reportedly deployed over 50 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to the United States since 2022, offering teaching and hospitality jobs through J-1 and H-1B visa programs with salary promises ranging from $40,000 to $100,000. 'If they are matching workers with employers in the U.S., that constitutes overseas recruitment, which requires a DMW license. Without it, it is clearly a case of illegal recruitment,' Cacdac said. Visa to America Manila advertises itself as having 31 years of 'immigration expertise,' offering visa processing, consultancy, IT services, legal support, and mock interviews. However, DMW stressed that such activities cannot include recruitment without proper authorization. The agency said it will also look into the status of the OFWs who used the company's services to ensure compliance with labor and immigration laws. The US Embassy in Manila has recently implemented stricter measures in visa applications, including requiring all non-immigrant visa applicants to publicly set their social media accounts for background checks.

ACWA Power Advances Tech in Yanbu Hydrogen Project
Home » Smart Sectors » Energy » ACWA Power Advances Tech in Yanbu Hydrogen Project ACWA Power, the private water desalination company and energy transition, has announced a key development in its green hydrogen ambitions. The company revealed that Spanish engineering firm Técnicas Reunidas and China-based Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering have been awarded a convertible front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia. According to the announcement, the contract covers a facility designed to produce 400,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will then be converted into green ammonia using multiple synthesis loops. The FEED contract will span 10 months. After this phase, the consortium will present an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) proposal. The commercial launch of this multibillion-dollar project is targeted for 2030. Técnicas Reunidas has been engaged with the project since the pre-FEED stages. The award to Sinopec follows a memorandum of understanding signed with ACWA Power in 2024. • The plant will use 5 GW each of wind and solar power• It will include a 400 km transmission line and up to 4.4 GW of electrolysers • Green hydrogen output will be converted into 2.5 million tonnes of green ammonia annually ACWA Power reported that the project aims to support the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors. Located in Yanbu Industrial City, it will supply international markets with green ammonia. Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power, said the progress on the Yanbu project highlights the company's dedication to the Kingdom's energy security and global sustainability goals. He added that exporting green ammonia will help accelerate decarbonisation efforts worldwide. Eduardo San Miguel, CEO of Técnicas Reunidas, noted that the project strengthens ties between Saudi Arabia and Europe and advances energy transition objectives. He also emphasized the firm's commitment to the Saudi market. Han Weiguo, President of Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering, called the project a milestone in green energy and a major step in global energy transformation. He confirmed the company's commitment to close collaboration with ACWA Power and Técnicas Reunidas. Oman a strategic choice for green iron: Meranti
MUSCAT - Singapore-headquartered low-carbon steel manufacturer Meranti Green Steel (MGS) is firming up plans to establish a Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) facility at the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Duqm on Oman's southeast coast. Phase 1 of the project targets a production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per year of HBI, around 60 per cent of which will be shipped as feedstock for Meranti's proposed green steel plant planned at Rayong in Thailand. The latter project, slated for commissioning in 2028, will produce 2.5 million tonnes per year of hot-rolled steel earmarked for industrial consumers of green steel across Southeast Asia. The remaining 40 per cent of HBI from the Oman project is proposed to be supplied to Meranti's offtake partners distributed around the globe. In a post on Monday, July 29, 2025, Meranti described the Oman project as a 'strategic pillar of its integrated value chain.' It also outlined several reasons for selecting Oman—and Duqm in particular—as the site for its HBI production facility. Chief among these factors, it stated, is access to competitive energy: 'Oman offers reliable, cost-competitive natural gas and a rapidly developing green hydrogen ecosystem. This makes it an ideal location for producing direct reduced iron (DRI) at scale.' Equally significant, Meranti noted, are Duqm's infrastructure and export readiness. 'The Duqm Special Economic Zone provides industrial land, deep-water port access, and efficient permitting frameworks. This supports fast-track development and efficient global distribution.' Additionally, Oman's location enables efficient supply to Meranti's steel plant in Thailand, as well as to European offtakers seeking low-emission hot briquetted iron (HBI). Shipping HBI from Oman improves logistics and lowers emissions compared to traditional supply routes, the company stressed. Earlier this month, Meranti revealed that it had received tentative commitments from the Omani government for the supply of natural gas for the HBI project in Duqm. 'With gas secured and green hydrogen partnerships advancing, Oman is now fully positioned to become a critical enabler of our mission to decarbonize iron and steelmaking,' the company stated in its most recent post. 'We are working closely with Omani authorities and our raw material partner, who are committed to sustainable industrial growth. Their support is foundational to our success,' the company added. A relatively recent entrant into the steel sector in Southeast Asia, Meranti aims to leverage the latest advancements in steelmaking and digital technologies to maintain a competitive edge. A key pillar of this strategy involves establishing geographically decoupled Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) supply chains, sourcing from highly competitive regions such as Oman and Western Australia. This approach enables Meranti to site HBI plants in locations with strong access to competitively priced natural gas and emerging green or blue hydrogen, while situating steel production facilities closer to end-user markets. 2025 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
