As someone who deals with episodes of lower back pain, one of the things I look for when testing mattresses is lumbar support. Two of my favorite mattresses that I've tested are the Saatva RX and Helix Midnight Luxe. Both deliver targeted lumbar support along with superb pressure relief and a luxurious finish, but which one should you buy if you have back pain?
The Saatva RX is a mattress made for people with joint and back conditions such as scoliosis, arthritis, and sciatica. We named it our best mattress for back pain overall for its exceptional pressure relief and supportive build. I noticed a reduction in my lower back pain after sleeping on it.
The Helix Midnight Luxe makes our best mattresses of 2025 guide as our top choice for side sleepers who want a balanced bed with a plush pillow top they can comfortably fall into. I slept on the version with an ErgoAlign upgrade, and I woke up refreshed and pain-free each morning.
Below, I'll be comparing the Saatva RX and Helix Midnight Luxe in areas of price, design, comfort and support, and temperature regulation — all based on the testing conducted by me and my fellow reviewers.
The Saatva RX is among the brand's most expensive beds, with a queen-size retailing for $3,399. You'll rarely have to pay this price as Saatva mattress sales happen year-round.
However, I recommend waiting for one of Saatva's percentage-off sales to purchase a Saatva RX at the best possible price. Discounts typically range from 12% to 15%, saving you about $500 on a queen-size. In contrast, Saatva's general dollar-off discounts reduce prices by $300 to $400.
Meanwhile, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a comparatively more affordable option, but it's still a premium-priced mattress, even with regular Helix mattress sales.
A queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe retails for $2,373, but it typically sells for 20% to 27% less, dropping the price as low as $1,733. You can add cooling and support upgrades, including an ErgoAlign layer for extra lumbar relief, but these can increase the final price by hundreds of dollars.
Unlike the Helix Midnight Luxe — a mattress-in-a-box delivered for free to your doorstep — the Saatva RX arrives flat via free White Glove Delivery, which includes the removal of your old bed and foundation. Helix offers an à la carte White Glove service in select ZIP codes from $119.
Both Saatva and Helix offer a lifetime warranty, but Saatva offers a much longer trial period of one full year. (Helix provides a 100-night trial.)
Saatva RX: was from $1,999 now from $1,799 at SaatvaThis luxury mattress for sleepers with chronic and serious back and joint pain is Saatva's most expensive mattress behind the Solaire, Saatva HD and larger sizes of the Zenhaven. All sizes are $200 to $400 off, bringing the price of a queen down to $3,049 after $350 off (was $3,399). It comes with a 365-night trial, a lifetime warranty, and free White Glove Delivery straight to your bedroom, including old mattress removal.
Helix Midnight Luxe: was from $1,373.80 now from $1,048 with code TOMS27+ freebies at Helix SleepThe Luxe Collection represents the mid-point of Helix's lineup. Use our exclusive code TOMS27 for 27% off, bagging you more money off than the brand's ongoing 25% off sale. With our coupon, a queen-size Midnight Luxe falls to $1,733 (was $2,373). It also comes with free sheets and a mattress protector, along with a 100-night trial, a lifetime warranty, and free shipping.
At 15", the Saatva RX is one of the tallest mattresses on the market. Atop a bed of triple-tempered recycled steel coils sits a layer of waved foam with five zones to target pressure points along the hips, shoulders, and lower back. Firmer caliper spring coils line the bed lengthwise for stronger edges at the sides.
The comfort layers consist of 1" micro-coils sandwiched between two pieces of 3/4" high-density foam, topped by a half-inch strip of gel-infused foam across the middle for lumbar support. The organic cotton cover features special quilting in the center to complement the lumbar crown.
The 13.5" Helix Midnight Luxe features a quilted pillow top, a dense layer of responsive foam, a layer of copper gel-infused memory foam and a transitional foam layer.
Below this is to up to 1,000 individually-wrapped springs, which are reinforced across the middle and along the perimeter for extra lumbar and edge support, respectively.
You can level up the standard Tencel cover to a specialist GlacioTex cooling material to boost temperature regulation. For maximum relief from night sweats, you can also add a series of graphite-infused ribbons on top of the gel-infused foam comfort layer to help draw heat away from the surface.
Opting for the ErgoAlign upgrade adds a three-zoned foam layer directly above the coils. It's denser in the middle to support the lower back.
The Saatva RX is rated 'Supportive Plush,' which Saatva describes as between 3-4 out of its 10-point firmness scale. However, my fellow testers and I considered it medium-firm to firm, between a 7.5 and an 8, in our Saatva RX Mattress review.
Despite that perceived firmness, the Saatva RX delivered on pressure relief. In our objective tests using a 50lb weight, we measured a 3.5" sink in the middle and a 2.5" sink toward the foot of the bed.
We enjoyed the Saatva RX most for back sleeping — one of our testers likened it to relaxing on a pool float. The combination of foams, springs, and microcoils evenly distributed our weight and contoured our bodies for full-body relief without sacrificing support. The stomach sleepers in our group gave it their seal of approval, as well, as their hips didn't dip.
As for side sleeping, the reactions were mixed. While I managed just as well on the Saatva as an average-sized sleeper with lower back pain, one of our smaller side sleepers with chronic pain from RSD and herniated discs couldn't get comfortable due to pressure buildup in her hips.
Helix rates the Midnight Luxe a 6 out of 10 on its firmness scale. In our Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress review, our testing panel agreed with that assessment, although I personally felt it was closer to a 7/10 with the addition of the ErgoAlign layer.
Our lead tester for the Midnight Luxe (sans upgrades) benefited greatly from the plush premium pillow top, ultra-responsive foam comfort layers and reinforced midsection. She didn't experience the 'dead hip' she's prone to developing when resting on her side for too long.
With the ErgoAlign layer, I was surprised to find myself involuntarily flipping onto my back, which is likely a good thing, given my history of back pain. The increased support in the middle helped with alignment, and the pillow top fit the nook of my lower spine nicely.
As versatile as the Helix Midnight Luxe is, we wouldn't call it a sound mattress for stomach sleepers, as it's not quite firm enough for that. (I was able to rest on my front with the ErgoAlign upgrade, but not long-term.)
The waved foam layer inside the Saatva RX is infused with graphite and phase change materials (PCM) to help keep the mattress at a reasonably cool temperature. That's in addition to the breathable organic cotton cover and layers of coils and microcoils through which air can travel freely.
I slept on the Saatva RX through a transitional season. No matter the temperature, I was perfectly cozy — not once did I wake up sweaty. For most people, the Saatva RX will maintain a comfortable microclimate for sleep.
Our lead tester awarded the Helix Midnight Luxe's temperature regulation a passing grade, with the caveat that she's not particularly a hot sleeper. However, the mattress now boasts 4lbs of titanium and graphite-infused memory foam for greater cooling prowess than the model we tested.
The Tencel cover will be breathable enough for most people, but if you deal with chronic overheating, consider turning it into a proper cooling mattress by adding a GlacioTex cover with a soothing sensation and graphite ribbons beneath the cover to draw heat from the surface.
✅ You want a luxurious orthopedic mattress: Saatva has created a supportive, comfortable mattress for sleepers with serious chronic back and joint conditions that's more fitting for a hotel suite than a hospital room.
✅ You don't want a mattress-in-a-box: Saatva doesn't roll-pack its mattresses like Helix does, so they're delivered flat. That means your mattress will be ready to sleep on almost immediately — and you shouldn't have to worry about off-gassing, either.
✅ You want the best perks in the industry: White Glove Delivery is free, and it includes haul-away of your previous mattress and foundation, too. You also get a full year to test it at home, allowing you to try it across all seasons and circumstances.
✅ You're a dedicated side sleeper: The Helix Midnight Luxe is the best mattress for side sleepers we've ever slept on. The plush pillow top, contouring foams, and reinforced middle deliver the ideal combination of lower back support and joint relief for the hips and shoulders.
✅ You want to make your mattress your own: While the Helix Midnight Luxe only comes in one firmness level, you can modify it to suit your preferences by boosting the lumbar support and/or cooling features.
✅ You have a (relatively) smaller budget: Of course, this is very much a splurge, but even with upgrades, you'll still wind up spending less for the Helix Midnight Luxe than you would for the Saatva RX.

Helix Dawn vs Plank Firm: which firm mattress should you buy?
Type: HybridFirmness: FirmHeight: 11.5"Sizes: 8Sleep trial: 100 nightsWarranty: LifetimeSale price: from $1,099 at Helix Type: Memory foamFirmness: Firm, Extra FirmHeight: 10"Sizes: 14Sleep trial: 120 nightsWarranty: LifetimeSale price: from $561.75 at Plank It's the battle of the firm mattresses, as we pit the Helix Dawn and Plank Firm against each other. If you need the enhanced support of a firm bed, this guide explores if the Helix Dawn or Plank Firm mattress is right for you. Our sleep experts have spent combined months sleeping on the Helix Dawn and Plank Firm and we rate them among the best mattresses we've tested. As well as a firm feel, the two share a mid-range price point and a supportive build that suits back and stomach sleepers. Here we're comparing the support, comfort and price of the Helix Dawn and Plank Firm mattresses to help you decide which of our favorite firm mattresses suits your sleep needs. It's a close head to head between the Helix Dawn and Plank, with both ranking among the best mattresses in a box we've tested. Below, we'll give a full rundown of how these mattresses stack up but here's a quick overview. The Dawn is a hybrid design and like the best hybrid mattresses we've tested it delivers support via its spring base. In our Helix Dawn Mattress review we praised its gentle contouring and responsive feel: our tester could move around without losing support (not that they needed to toss and turn to get comfortable.) The Plank Firm is an all-foam mattress and without any springs, it uses a dense foam core for firm support all-round. It's just as firm as you expect from a bed named the 'plank'. Particularly on the Extra Firm side because did we mention? It's a double sided mattress. Firm on one side, Extra Firm on the other, we liked both in our Plank Firm Mattress review but while the Firm side is the crowd pleaser, the niche appeal of the Extra Firm impressed our testers. The Helix Dawn and Plank Firm Mattress are mid-range mattresses and cost around $1,000 for a queen. The Helix Dawn is slightly pricier with a queen $1,099 in the standard Helix Mattress sale but as a queen Plank Firm typically sells for $999, there's not much in it. Both brands offer deals throughout the year — look out for 20% off at Helix and 25% off at Plank — but good timing can help you save more. Around peak sales days, such as Black Friday and Memorial Day, Helix has a tendency to boost the sale to 25%, while Plank offers 30% off on special occasions. The DreamCloud Premier mattress and the CopperFlex Hybrid Pro mattress also fit in this price range. We think the Dawn and Plank offer competitive value. You get a limited lifetime warranty with both the Helix Dawn and Plank but the Plank does have a slightly better trial period: 120 nights, compared to 100. However, it's worth remembering the Plank is a double-sided mattress, so you almost have two beds to test out during that sleep trial. Helix Dawn Mattress: twin was $998.66 now $729.03 at Helix SleepYou can always save 20% at Helix but right now is the time to buy as you can score 27% off with our code TOMS27. This reduces a queen from $1,332 to $972 which is the best mattress sale we think you're going to get. Plank Firm Mattress: twin was $749 now $561.75 at PlankAs a double-sided and extra firm mattress, the Plank Firm is a niche entry to the sleep market and we think the mid-range price is a good deal. In the standard sale a queen is $999 (was $1,332). We have seen 30% off in recent weeks reducing a queen to $932 but we think it might be a while before that deal reappears. The Helix Dawn and Plank Firm mattresses share a firm feel and we'll explore what that's like to sleep on below. For now, we're focusing on how they achieve this firmness. When it comes to design, these mattresses couldn't be more different. To be fair, the Plank Firm is different to most mattresses. While we rank it among the best memory foam mattresses we've tested, it doesn't have the traditional build we'd expect from an all-foam bed. First, it's double-sided. Flipped one way, the Plank is Firm. Flipped the other, it's Extra Firm. To create this, the Plank Firm features a dense six-inch support core that sits in the middle of the mattress. This is largely responsible for the feel of the mattress and on the Extra firm side, it's topped only by .75" of foam. On the Firm side there's a bit more padding: two more inches of foam, plus the .75" of the quilted cover. The Helix Dawn is a hybrid mattress and unlike the Plank, it sticks to tradition. Four foam layers, including a layer of latex-alternative dynamic foam and two layers of firm response foam, sit on top of a spring base with a final layer of base foam for durability. We've tested both the Helix Dawn and Plank Firm mattresses and we consider them among the best mattresses for stomach sleepers you can buy online. Mattresses for stomach sleepers are typically firm with plenty of support. Stomach sleeping places the back at an awkward angle but a firm mattress keeps the spine straight to limit twisting and prevent pain. The Helix Dawn is a classic stomach sleeper mattress: firm with ample support from a spring base. Our testers agreed it was an 8 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, 10 indicating rock hard. We found the upper foam layers contoured gently around the body to prevent pressure build up, impressing our back sleeping testers. Side sleeping was also comfortable on the Dawn, mostly in short bursts. Dedicated side sleepers should consider a softer mattress, such as the Helix Midnight Mattress, which has more cushioning at the shoulders. Our lead tester spent multiple weeks sleeping on both sides of the Plank Firm to build up a full picture of the comfort. Across our testing panel, one thing immediately stood out when lying on the Extra Firm side: it's really firm. While it shouldn't be a surprise, we were taken aback by the hard feel, rating it 9 out of 10. But it took only a few minutes for the back and stomach sleepers to appreciate how supportive it is. Side sleepers, however, should avoid the Extra Firm side. There's not enough cushioning at the pressure points, resulting in aching arms and hips. The Firm side does have more cushioning, partly due to the added foam but also because the looser quilting gives more bounce to sink into. This side is better for side sleepers although as with the Dawn, mostly in short bursts. Like the Dawn, we rated the Firm side 8 out of 10 for firmness. Our lead tester is a stomach sleeper and while she loved the Extra Firm side sometimes it pressed too hard against the stomach. For example, after a late dinner. The Extra Firm side divided our testers with some (primarily the side sleepers) unable to find comfort. The Firm is more of a crowd pleaser. Overheating can disrupt sleep but for the most part, both the Dawn and the Plank remain a neutral temperature overnight. Our testers did feel the beds could, on warm nights, trap some heat, with the problem more pronounced in the Plank Firm. We think this will only impact hot sleepers and both Helix and Plank offer a GlacioTex cover upgrade. GlacioTex is used in many top cooling mattresses so we recommend the add-on if you experience night sweats or hot flashes. Hybrid mattresses tend to have better edge support than their all-foam equivalents and with reinforced springs on the lengthwise sides, the Helix Dawn is sturdy at the edges (if a little weak at the corners.) The Plank, however, surprised us with its firm feel from corner to corner: we awarded edge support full marks. Both mattresses also have good motion isolation, although the Plank just takes the win (those thick foams deaden movement.) But if you share a bed, both mattresses should minimize disruption from a restless partner. ✅ You prefer a traditional feel: With tall springs and a bouncy response foam, the Helix Dawn moves when you move for consistent support and comfort. A more traditional innerspring feel than the all-foam Plank. ✅ You want to customize the bed: The Helix Dawn comes with optional cooling and support add ons, plus Helix Luxe and Elite upgrades. The Plank Firm does have some optional upgrades but not as many as the Dawn. (You can see how the Dawn performs against an upgraded model in our Helix Dawn vs Dusk Luxe mattress head to head.) ✅ You're a combination sleeper: We found the Dawn comfortable in most sleep positions, even if dedicated side sleepers might want a few more layers of cushioning, making it a good choice for those who move around in the night. ✅ You can never find a firm mattress that's firm enough: If you like the feel of Japanese floor mattresses and find standard beds never provide the support you need, the Plank Firm delivers reliable, consistent firmness. ✅ Your comfort needs change: Double sided mattresses, like the Plank, are best for those who need different support levels on different nights. For example, those with reoccurring injuries or occasional bed sharers. ✅ You like the added support of strong edges: The Dawn has good edge support but the Plank Firm is exceptional. You can sit and press against the side of the mattress without it sinking beneath you, making it easier to get in and out of bed.

How To Make Your Mattress Firmer: 6 Expert-Backed Methods
When it comes to the ideal mattress, some people think the softer, the better. While an ultra-plush model works great for those needing deep pressure relief, for others (namely back and stomach sleepers) it spells a night of back pain and stiffness caused by poor spinal alignment. If you find yourself suffering from the aforementioned ailments after a night of sleep, then you might want to firm up your mattress. Here are six ways to make your mattress firmer, including adding a mattress topper. Before you resign yourself to buying an entirely new mattress, there are several steps you can take to make your current mattress feel firmer, from adding a topper to simply rotating it. Below, we detail how to make your mattress firmer using six tips, plus offer further expert insight into who a firm mattress is best for. Here are six different ways you can make your mattress firmer: A mattress topper is an easy, relatively inexpensive way to transform the feel of your mattress, whether you're looking to add more softness or firmness. Firm mattress toppers are typically made from latex, memory foam, polyfoam or microcoils, which offer various firmness levels and their own set of benefits. PlushBeds Helix Sometimes poor firmness in a mattress has nothing to do with the mattress itself but rather what it's resting on. The right bed frame lends the proper support needed to maintain a bed's firmness. Depending on the type of mattress you have, a wood or metal bed frame can be supportive, although we recommend Thuma's Classic Bed, which uses a Japanese joinery technique and cushion-coated slats to support up to 1,500 pounds. (See our full Thuma Bed review to learn more.) Thuma Addressing the issue of a lack of firmness might require some investigating as to what's going on beneath the mattress. Slatted bed frames or bases that are older might not be providing the necessary support your mattress needs, causing it to sag, have an uneven surface or generally feel less firm than it actually is. The addition of extra slats, like the Zinus replacement bed slats , or supports help to redistribute the weight of a mattress, in turn creating a firmer sleeping surface. Certain mattress materials like memory foam are sensitive to temperature, causing their firmness to change based on how hot or cold it is. Memory foam becomes more pliable in warmer temperatures, softening to more easily contour to your body. Some might find that the mattress becomes too soft, but a quick and easy fix is to lower the temperature to let it firm back up a bit. Sleeping in the same spot night after night can start to wear on the mattress, evidenced by indents and sagging. Rotating your mattress so that the head becomes the foot helps to evenly distribute wear and prevent indentations and sagging that hinder sleep. It's generally recommended to rotate your mattress every six months, although the frequency can vary depending on the type of mattress, so be sure to check with the manufacturer if you're unsure how often you should be rotating your specific model. If you've attempted the above tips and still find yourself dissatisfied with your mattress' firmness and your overall sleep quality, it might be time to consider a newer model. 'Mattresses are designed to last for about seven to ten years. You will know that it is time to get a new mattress if you see a visible sag where you sleep,' says Andrew E. Colsky, JD, LLM, LPC, LMHC and founder of National Sleep Center. Colsky also recommends investing in a new mattress if you find yourself experiencing back, neck or hip pain caused by lumps and dips in your current one. Choosing the best mattress for your sleep style and needs can be an overwhelming process, which is why we've tested more than 150 mattresses firsthand to determine the best mattresses for all types of sleepers, including our top pick, the Helix Midnight Luxe. During our testing, we also found the Plank Firm Mattress to be the best firm mattress overall, thanks to its flippable design that offers two firmness levels. Plank You might think that the feel and the firmness of a mattress are one in the same, but they actually mean different things. Where 'feel' refers to the sensation of the mattress' materials (i.e. bouncy latex or plush, dense memory foam), firmness refers to how hard or soft the mattress is. A mattress' firmness is often rated on a scale of 1 to 10 and falls into either the soft, medium-firm or firm categories. Determining the right firmness for your sleep style and needs is key to achieving comfortable, healthy sleep. With mattresses that are too soft, your body could potentially sink too much, causing spinal misalignment that leads to pain and discomfort. On the other hand, a mattress that is too firm might not contour the body enough to provide adequate pressure relief. Not everyone benefits from a firm mattress, but several types of sleepers find a firm model works best for them. It's important for back sleepers to have the necessary support to maintain natural alignment and keep the hips from sinking too deeply (and thus preventing lower back pain). A medium-firm to firm mattress like the Leesa Sapira Chill, our top pick for back sleepers, helps prevent the back from dipping. 'If you sleep on your stomach, a firm mattress stops your midsection from sagging, which can otherwise hyperextend your spine and cause discomfort,' says Colsky. Similar to back sleepers, the best mattresses for stomach sleepers are medium-firm to firm. Like back and sleepers, sleepers weighing more than 250 pounds should opt for a firm mattress, or one specifically designed for them, that offers ample support to stop unnecessary sinkage and keep the spine aligned. The Forbes Vetted sleep team has over a decade of experience testing and reviewing mattresses and sleep products, reflected in our extensive content library, which includes everything from mattress guides to sleep product recommendations.
