Saatva RX vs Helix Midnight Luxe: Which luxury mattress for back pain should you buy?

Two of my favorite mattresses that I've tested are the Saatva RX and Helix Midnight Luxe. Both deliver targeted lumbar support along with superb pressure relief and a luxurious finish, but which one should you buy if you have back pain? The Saatva RX is a mattress made for people with joint and back conditions such as scoliosis, arthritis, and sciatica. We named it our best mattress for back pain overall for its exceptional pressure relief and supportive build. I noticed a reduction in my lower back pain after sleeping on it. The Helix Midnight Luxe makes our best mattresses of 2025 guide as our top choice for side sleepers who want a balanced bed with a plush pillow top they can comfortably fall into. I slept on the version with an ErgoAlign upgrade, and I woke up refreshed and pain-free each morning. Below, I'll be comparing the Saatva RX and Helix Midnight Luxe in areas of price, design, comfort and support, and temperature regulation — all based on the testing conducted by me and my fellow reviewers. The Saatva RX is among the brand's most expensive beds, with a queen-size retailing for $3,399. You'll rarely have to pay this price as Saatva mattress sales happen year-round. However, I recommend waiting for one of Saatva's percentage-off sales to purchase a Saatva RX at the best possible price. Discounts typically range from 12% to 15%, saving you about $500 on a queen-size. In contrast, Saatva's general dollar-off discounts reduce prices by $300 to $400. Meanwhile, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a comparatively more affordable option, but it's still a premium-priced mattress, even with regular Helix mattress sales. A queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe retails for $2,373, but it typically sells for 20% to 27% less, dropping the price as low as $1,733. You can add cooling and support upgrades, including an ErgoAlign layer for extra lumbar relief, but these can increase the final price by hundreds of dollars. Unlike the Helix Midnight Luxe — a mattress-in-a-box delivered for free to your doorstep — the Saatva RX arrives flat via free White Glove Delivery, which includes the removal of your old bed and foundation. Helix offers an à la carte White Glove service in select ZIP codes from $119. Both Saatva and Helix offer a lifetime warranty, but Saatva offers a much longer trial period of one full year. (Helix provides a 100-night trial.) Saatva RX: was from $1,999 now from $1,799 at SaatvaThis luxury mattress for sleepers with chronic and serious back and joint pain is Saatva's most expensive mattress behind the Solaire, Saatva HD and larger sizes of the Zenhaven. All sizes are $200 to $400 off, bringing the price of a queen down to $3,049 after $350 off (was $3,399). It comes with a 365-night trial, a lifetime warranty, and free White Glove Delivery straight to your bedroom, including old mattress removal. Helix Midnight Luxe: was from $1,373.80 now from $1,048 with code TOMS27+ freebies at Helix SleepThe Luxe Collection represents the mid-point of Helix's lineup. Use our exclusive code TOMS27 for 27% off, bagging you more money off than the brand's ongoing 25% off sale. With our coupon, a queen-size Midnight Luxe falls to $1,733 (was $2,373). It also comes with free sheets and a mattress protector, along with a 100-night trial, a lifetime warranty, and free shipping. At 15", the Saatva RX is one of the tallest mattresses on the market. Atop a bed of triple-tempered recycled steel coils sits a layer of waved foam with five zones to target pressure points along the hips, shoulders, and lower back. Firmer caliper spring coils line the bed lengthwise for stronger edges at the sides. The comfort layers consist of 1" micro-coils sandwiched between two pieces of 3/4" high-density foam, topped by a half-inch strip of gel-infused foam across the middle for lumbar support. The organic cotton cover features special quilting in the center to complement the lumbar crown. The 13.5" Helix Midnight Luxe features a quilted pillow top, a dense layer of responsive foam, a layer of copper gel-infused memory foam and a transitional foam layer. Below this is to up to 1,000 individually-wrapped springs, which are reinforced across the middle and along the perimeter for extra lumbar and edge support, respectively. You can level up the standard Tencel cover to a specialist GlacioTex cooling material to boost temperature regulation. For maximum relief from night sweats, you can also add a series of graphite-infused ribbons on top of the gel-infused foam comfort layer to help draw heat away from the surface. Opting for the ErgoAlign upgrade adds a three-zoned foam layer directly above the coils. It's denser in the middle to support the lower back. The Saatva RX is rated 'Supportive Plush,' which Saatva describes as between 3-4 out of its 10-point firmness scale. However, my fellow testers and I considered it medium-firm to firm, between a 7.5 and an 8, in our Saatva RX Mattress review. Despite that perceived firmness, the Saatva RX delivered on pressure relief. In our objective tests using a 50lb weight, we measured a 3.5" sink in the middle and a 2.5" sink toward the foot of the bed. We enjoyed the Saatva RX most for back sleeping — one of our testers likened it to relaxing on a pool float. The combination of foams, springs, and microcoils evenly distributed our weight and contoured our bodies for full-body relief without sacrificing support. The stomach sleepers in our group gave it their seal of approval, as well, as their hips didn't dip. As for side sleeping, the reactions were mixed. While I managed just as well on the Saatva as an average-sized sleeper with lower back pain, one of our smaller side sleepers with chronic pain from RSD and herniated discs couldn't get comfortable due to pressure buildup in her hips. Helix rates the Midnight Luxe a 6 out of 10 on its firmness scale. In our Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress review, our testing panel agreed with that assessment, although I personally felt it was closer to a 7/10 with the addition of the ErgoAlign layer. Our lead tester for the Midnight Luxe (sans upgrades) benefited greatly from the plush premium pillow top, ultra-responsive foam comfort layers and reinforced midsection. She didn't experience the 'dead hip' she's prone to developing when resting on her side for too long. With the ErgoAlign layer, I was surprised to find myself involuntarily flipping onto my back, which is likely a good thing, given my history of back pain. The increased support in the middle helped with alignment, and the pillow top fit the nook of my lower spine nicely. As versatile as the Helix Midnight Luxe is, we wouldn't call it a sound mattress for stomach sleepers, as it's not quite firm enough for that. (I was able to rest on my front with the ErgoAlign upgrade, but not long-term.) The waved foam layer inside the Saatva RX is infused with graphite and phase change materials (PCM) to help keep the mattress at a reasonably cool temperature. That's in addition to the breathable organic cotton cover and layers of coils and microcoils through which air can travel freely. I slept on the Saatva RX through a transitional season. No matter the temperature, I was perfectly cozy — not once did I wake up sweaty. For most people, the Saatva RX will maintain a comfortable microclimate for sleep. Our lead tester awarded the Helix Midnight Luxe's temperature regulation a passing grade, with the caveat that she's not particularly a hot sleeper. However, the mattress now boasts 4lbs of titanium and graphite-infused memory foam for greater cooling prowess than the model we tested. The Tencel cover will be breathable enough for most people, but if you deal with chronic overheating, consider turning it into a proper cooling mattress by adding a GlacioTex cover with a soothing sensation and graphite ribbons beneath the cover to draw heat from the surface. ✅ You want a luxurious orthopedic mattress: Saatva has created a supportive, comfortable mattress for sleepers with serious chronic back and joint conditions that's more fitting for a hotel suite than a hospital room. ✅ You don't want a mattress-in-a-box: Saatva doesn't roll-pack its mattresses like Helix does, so they're delivered flat. That means your mattress will be ready to sleep on almost immediately — and you shouldn't have to worry about off-gassing, either. ✅ You want the best perks in the industry: White Glove Delivery is free, and it includes haul-away of your previous mattress and foundation, too. You also get a full year to test it at home, allowing you to try it across all seasons and circumstances. ✅ You're a dedicated side sleeper: The Helix Midnight Luxe is the best mattress for side sleepers we've ever slept on. The plush pillow top, contouring foams, and reinforced middle deliver the ideal combination of lower back support and joint relief for the hips and shoulders. ✅ You want to make your mattress your own: While the Helix Midnight Luxe only comes in one firmness level, you can modify it to suit your preferences by boosting the lumbar support and/or cooling features. ✅ You have a (relatively) smaller budget: Of course, this is very much a splurge, but even with upgrades, you'll still wind up spending less for the Helix Midnight Luxe than you would for the Saatva RX.

My 3 favorite Memorial Day mattress topper sales to make soft beds supportive for back sleepers

If your mattress is a little too soft to be supportive for back sleeping, today's Memorial Day mattress sales is a great time to invest in a mattress topper for spinal support. One standout saving is 27% off the Helix ErgoAlign mattress topper at Helix Sleep with the code TOMS27. That brings a queen down to $364 from $499, which is an excellent price on a topper that promotes healthy spinal alignment and laced with cooling tech. Even the best mattresses can lack in support if it's approaching the end of its lifespan, but adding an extra layer of support can help promote a healthy sleep position. I've picked out three mattress topper deals for helping to not only firm up your mattress, but also offer enough support to making back sleeping more comfortable. Today's Memorial Day mattress and bedding sales means there are plenty of options to choose from, but these three are top of my list. Let's look at them more closely... 1. Helix ErgoAlign Mattress Topper: from $373.73 $272.54 with code TOMS27 at HelixLike the best mattresses for back pain, Helix's ErgoAlign mattress topper is specifically designed to help ease back pain. The topper is divided into three sections, with softer foam at the head and foot to contour to your body. In the middle, you'll find a denser foam that provides pressure relief and lumbar support to keep your spine elevated. There's also a GlacioTex cooling cover to keep sleepers cool (you'll often find this in the best cooling mattresses.) Use the code TOMS27 for 27% off the topper, which brings a queen size down to $364.03 (MSRP $498.66). There's also a 100-night trial and free shipping. 2. Serta ThermaGel Cooling Mattress Topper: from $49 $46 at AmazonIf you're on a tighter budget, the Serta ThermaGel cooling mattress topper is a great deak, with a queen coming in at $59 from $74. Choose from 2" or 3" options for a topper that provides a decent amount of support and pressure relief. The breathable material also does a great job of preventing heat from building up, helping to dissipate it away from the body. Bear in mind that if you want the thicker topper, you'll be looking at $91.76 (was $116.80.) 3. Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper: from $238 $202 at PuffyWe rate the Puffy Deluxe as one of the best mattress toppers on the market right now. It comes in two versions, firm and soft. For those looking to firm up their mattresses, we'd unsurprisingly recommend the firm version. We tested this in our Puffy Deluxe mattress topper review, finding that while the dense firm did contour to pressure points, the topper still provided plenty of support and structure to the mattress where needed. A queen size will cost you to $245 (MSRP $288) and you'll get a very generous 101-night trial, lifetime warranty and free shipping.

I tried the 'best mattress for side sleepers' and fell in love — now 27% off for Memorial Day

As a side sleeper, I'm on a quest to find a mattress that cradles my body and keeps my spine aligned, while stopping the dreaded 'dead hip' or achy shoulder. So, when the opportunity came my way to try out the renowned Helix Midnight Luxe, I jumped at the chance. And, with 27% off all Helix mattresses right now with the code TOMS27, this luxury mattress has dropped to just $1,732.54 or a queen (was $2,373.33). The Tom's Guide team has rated the Helix Midnight Luxe as the best mattress for side sleepers of 2025, and we're not the only ones. The hybrid pillow-top bed is renowned for its pressure relief, support and comfort, and when I finally got the chance to lie down on it, I wasn't disappointed. So, if you're browsing the Memorial Day mattress sales to refresh your bedroom and treat yourself to some much needed quality sleep, I recommend the Midnight Luxe. And, since the current mattress sales are offering such great value, I'll also share my top alternative for a slightly smaller budget. Helix Midnight Luxe mattress: twin was $1,436 now $1,048.28 at HelixThis Helix Midnight Luxe is made up of seven layers that combine gel memory foam, high-density foams and individually wrapped coils, topped with Tencel pillow-top cover (and the option to pay for an upgraded GlacioTex cooling cover). The result? A medium-firm feel that cushions you enough to relieve pressure but not enough to sink into the mattress. During our Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review, our lead tester reported 'cloud-like comfort' when sleeping on her side, thanks to the responsive foams and the 'give' in the pillow top. During the Helix Memorial Day mattress sale, you can get a queen for $1,732.54 (was $2,373.33) using the code TOMS27. Plus, you'll get a free mattress protector and sheet set, as well as a 100-night sleep trial, free shipping and a limited lifetime warranty. The Sleep Editor for Tom's Guide, Nicola Appleton, has long been telling me about the wonders of the Helix Midnight Luxe since she reviewed it. It's her favorite mattress by a mile, as well as one of our top picks in this year's best mattress for all sleepers guide so there was a lot of hype to live up to. But when I lay down on it for the first time, it all made sense. The soft, cradling pillow top contoured around my body, offering constant plush support no matter my position. I even tried lying on my back (which I never do because my spine is quite arched) and the mattress moulded to my shape, taking the strain and pressure off my spine. I think this support can also be attributed to the ErgoAlign Layer (which is an optional extra, though in the current sale it's reduced from $249 to $187)— a layer of ultra dense foam that sits above the coils for extra lumbar support. It's no surprise it features in our tried and tested best hybrid mattresses of the sets this mattress apart from others I have tried is the fantastic balance between plush, cozy comfort and responsive, adaptive support. I personally hate the sinking feeling of soft foam mattresses, it makes me feel claustrophobic and I struggle to see how it's supporting my body. But when I tried the Midnight Luxe, I lay on top of the bed rather than within it, and it didn't feel like the mattress was too firm around my shoulders, hips and knees. It's a mattress worth investing in, especially in the current Helix mattress sales. Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid: twin was $865 now $605.50 with pillow top at Brooklyn BeddingThe Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid shares a similar design to the Midnight Luxe, but it's over $500 cheaper in the current mattress sales. It has five layers featuring high-density foams and innerspring coils, with an optional cooling pillow-top. The benefit of the Signature Hybrid is its customization options, making it suitable for all types of sleepers. You can choose from a soft, medium or firm feel, and from 14 different sizes. For the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid review, we tried the firm option with the pillow top, but we'd suggest side sleepers opt for the medium or soft. There's currently a 30% off Brooklyn Bedding mattress sale with the code MEMORIAL30, bringing a queen size with the pillow top down to $1,212.40 (was $1,732). You'll also get a limited lifetime warranty, a 120-night trial and free shipping.

There's still plenty of time between now and Memorial Day, but the mattress and bedding sales are already underway. However, we may receive compensation from retailers and/or from purchases of products through these links. Memorial Day is fast approaching, because time only passes faster as we get older. You know what else we need as we get older? A better mattress. I can't rave enough about how much changing my mattress helped my back pain, taking me from starting each day half hunched over to feeling like a springy teen again. While a mattress can't turn back time, a better mattress can lead to a lot of things: better sleep! better support! less pain overnight! One of the best times to shop for a mattress is leading up to Memorial Day. There are some sales already underway, though some are in honor of Earth Day and Mother's Day, and some are only for the weekend, so make sure to read the fine print and don't miss these deals while they're happening. We've rounded up everything we recommend for a better night's sleep that's currently on sale. Everything listed is based on queen size, with the discount listed based on the price we usually see these mattresses and sheets available for. Looking for more bedding and sleep advice? The maker of our favorite mattress is running a special sale this weekend, with the best discount you can find on its mattresses: 27 percent off with the code WIRED27. Helix makes our favorite mattress for most people, the Helix Midnight Luxe Hybrid, and several others we've loved. It's a great brand to shop, and this sale is the best rate we see all year long. You can also now buy the fantastic ErgoAlign layer as its own mattress topper, which I can't stop sleeping on. The savings shown are based off that usual price we see, and the sale is only through the weekend. Birch is the organic sister brand of Helix, and it's running the same fantastic sale this weekend of 27 percent off with the code WIRED27. Birch makes both our favorite organic mattress and our favorite mattress topper (organic or not!), and it's a great choice if you're looking to go organic in your bedroom. After all, you spend eight hours a day sleeping in there. The savings shown are based off that usual price we see, rather than the full list price. This sale will only last through the weekend, so don't miss it. Organic bedding brand Avocado is running not just an Earth Day sale, but an Earth Month sale that will be available until early May. It's also a pre-tariffs sale, with prices expected to rise in the near future. Avocado makes a ton of great organic sleep products, particularly its Green Mattress and Eco Mattress Topper. The sale is 10 percent off, which is a price we often see, but it might be the lowest we see for a while after the new tariff prices kick in. Naturepedic is running its biggest sale in honor of the brand's 22nd birthday (and Earth Day on April 22) by offering 22 percent off everything on the site with the code EARTH22. Its organic mattress is a favorite of ours for its traditional feel, and Naturepedic's sheet sets are of fantastic quality. You can buy them as a set or as individual pieces. Best Early Memorial Day Bedding Deals Bamboo sheets are some of my favorites to sleep on. They're silky-soft and cool to the touch, but are a nice choice for spring, since they'll warm up around you overnight. Some are even great cooling sheets. The newest ones I've tried are from Cariloha, and both sets were decadently soft and silky. The brand has a few different bamboo sheet styles, but the Classic Sheets are my favorite, thanks to the securing bands that keep them from moving around. Cariloha's entire site is 20 percent off for Mother's Day with the code MOTHERS20. Cozy Earth's sale is actually for Mother's Day, but their decadent bedding is always a great one to score on sale. Cozy Earth makes everything from sheets and comforters to towels and robes, all of which I love using around my home. Bamboo sheets are a huge favorite of everyone I show them to, so if you haven't gotten a set yet, now's the time. Slumber Cloud uses Tencel lyocell fabric along with its own proprietary fibers to make some of the best cooling sheets I've ever tried. They feel as light as percale, but silkier (thanks to the softness of lyocell!) and don't make me feel sticky and sweaty like other special cooling sheets tend to do. It's honestly impressive, and as the weather warms up, I'll be reaching for these sheets time and time again. Slumber Cloud is running an anniversary sale from now until April 30, so snag these sheets for 20 percent off while you can.
