16 arrested under Assam Cattle Preservation Act for illegal slaughter during Eid
Silchar: At least 16 people were arrested under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, for alleged illegal slaughtering of cattle in the state during Eid-ul-Zuha, police said Sunday.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said multiple incidents of cattle slaughter, in violation of existing legal provisions, and recovery of cattle parts were reported from five Assam districts, including Kamrup Metro, Dhubri, Hojai, Cachar, and Sribhumi.
He said suspected body parts of slaughtered cows were found in multiple locations, including near Guwahati's Cotton University, and police discovered five illegal slaughter sites in Cachar and Sribhumi. 'While our Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, it equally upholds the rule of law and public order. But during this year's Eid-ul-Zuha, illegal cattle slaughter and recovery of cattle parts were reported from multiple locations,' he added.
Around 16 individuals were arrested separately in Cachar and Sribhumi districts between Saturday and Sunday, police said.
'We arrested seven individuals for their involvement in illegal cow slaughterings under Section 196 (acts to promote hatred based on religion, race, language, or other grounds), 299 (culpable homicide), 325 (killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering useless any animal), 3(5) (criminal acts committed by several persons with a common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 13(1) of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. Further investigation is going on,' superintendent of police (SP) of Sribhumi Partha Pratim Das said.
Additional SP (Crime) of Cachar district, Rajat Pal, said that acting on complaints received from Gumrah, Silchar, and Lakhipur, police arrested nine individuals. 'The law and order situation in the district is normal now,' he said.
In August 2021, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam cabinet passed the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, replacing a cattle preservation law of 1950.
As per the new Act, cattle slaughter and the sale of beef within a five-kilometre radius of a temple or satra (Assamese religious sites) is illegal. These activities are also illegal in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs are in the majority.
In December last year, the state government announced some additional restrictions on beef consumption and, according to the chief minister, beef consumption in public places — including restaurants, hotels, public events, and community festivals — is restricted and illegal in Assam.
During Eid-ul-Zuha on Saturday, several organisations, including Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), staged protests against the alleged illegal cow slaughters in Cachar and Sribhumi.
'Open cow slaughter in Hindu-majority areas is banned in Assam but still some people try this. This time we refrained from going to those areas physically. Rather, we informed the police and they acted immediately,' Mithun Nath from VHP said.

3 booked under NDPS Act in separate cases
Udupi: Three persons were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in separate cases reported from Kundapur and Kaup in Udupi district. The accused were identified as Mohammad Ajwan, 23, Mohammad Shafiq, 18, and Anil, 23. On Saturday, Dharmendra, ASI of Kundapur police station, was on duty near Shastri Circle in Vadderhobli village, Kundapur taluk, when he noticed a man behaving suspiciously. The man, identified as Mohammad Ajwan, was taken into custody and subjected to a medical examination at Kundapur Govt Hospital. The medical officer confirmed that he consumed narcotic substances. A case was registered under Section 27(b) of the NDPS Act. In another incident the same day, ASI Dharmendra noticed another individual, later identified as Mohammad Shafiq, loitering in an intoxicated state near Parijata Circle in Kasaba village. He was similarly detained and taken for a medical examination, which confirmed drug consumption. A case was filed under the same section of the NDPS Act. In a separate case reported from Kaup taluk, Tejaswi TI, sub-inspector of Kaup police station, received information on Friday about a youth allegedly consuming ganja near the Narayana Guru Sabha Bhavan in Muluru village. The youth, identified as Anil, who was found under the influence of drugs, was taken to the forensic medicine department at KMC Hospital, Manipal. The forensic report on Saturday confirmed ganja consumption. Based on this, a case was registered at Kaup police station under Section 27(b) of the NDPS Act.

Woman blames in-laws for husband's death in LPG blast, fresh case filed
Udupi: The Hebri police registered a fresh case on Saturday after a woman accused her in-laws of negligence that led to her husband's death. The victim, Anoop, reportedly died in a fire accident in April. In her complaint, a 31- year-old woman, a resident of Kota, stated that she was married to Anoop and the couple has a four-year-old son. She alleged that her in-laws, were involved in frequent disputes with the couple and were illegally and dangerously storing LPG cylinders at their residence. According to her, they were engaged in refilling domestic gas cylinders into commercial ones. On April 11, around 5pm, while the accused were allegedly transferring LPG from domestic to commercial cylinders, one of them carelessly used a lighter, which triggered a fire. Anoop, who was present at the time, suffered severe burn injuries. He was first taken to a clinic in Hebri and later shifted to a hospital in Manipal for advanced treatment. Despite efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on April 17. Initially, an unnatural death report (UDR) was filed, and the family maintained that the fire was caused by a cooking accident. FIR against 6 for offering Eid namaz at power substation in Hapur
Meerut: An FIR was registered against six persons, including Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) members, for allegedly offering Eid namaz at a power substation in Simbhaoli area of Hapur, police said on Sunday. The action comes during a sit-in protest led by BKU at the powerhouse, where farmers are demanding the immediate repair of electricity poles damaged in the recent storm. Protesters also demanded action against an official for demanding a bribe of Rs 40,000 in exchange for approving an electricity connection for a tubewell. On the occasion of Bakrid, some BKU members reportedly offered namaz on the premises of the substation. A video of the act was widely circulated online, following which, junior engineer Rambali Maurya, lodged an FIR at Simbhaoli police station against BKU district president Dinesh Kheda, activists Kunwar Khushnud, Manvvar Ali, Naushad, Faizan Abbasi, and an unidentified person under sections 191 (2) (illegal gathering in a group), 121 (1) obstructing govt work, 351 (2), 351 (3) of the BNS. "An FIR has been registered and further investigation is underway. No arrest has been made so far," said circle officer Varun Mishra. Meanwhile, Maurya added that the ongoing agitation is also linked to an earlier incident involving electricity theft. An inspection was carried out on complaints of electricity theft in Ratupura village and uncovered power theft in nine houses. "An FIR was registered in this matter, and the farmer leaders were pressuring us to withdraw the FIR and began their protests," said Maurya.
