SBA concludes its participation in Readmagine 2025 in Madrid
The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) has concluded its participation in Readmagine 2025, one of Europe's leading platforms for innovation in the publishing sector.
Held in Madrid and organised by the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation (FGSR), the event marked Sharjah's debut as the first Arab city to participate, reaffirming the emirate's status as a regional and global centre for publishing development and international collaboration.
During the international event, SBA participated in a session titled 'Empowering Emirati publishers through the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur),' featuring Iman Ben Chaibah, Director of strategic initiatives and global markets at SBA, alongside Shatha Nasser, founder of Kairos Publishing House and one of the winners in the fund's inaugural launch track.
In the session, Iman Ben Chaibah reaffirmed Sharjah's commitment to shaping a sustainable and resilient future for the publishing industry in the UAE and the wider region.
She introduced Onshur as a strategic initiative designed to empower publishers through three integrated tracks: launch, scale and disrupt.
'The fund was established to address a fundamental challenge: how to ensure the continued strength and growth of the publishing sector over the long term. It responds to this need by offering a well-rounded framework of training, financial backing and professional mentorship, equipping publishers to tackle industry demands and grow their businesses with assurance and skill.'
She went on to credit the vision of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SBA, for shaping the fund's comprehensive framework.
'Onshur offers a fully integrated support system that combines professional guidance, targeted training and access to a network of industry partners and specialists. It also provides practical resources such as trade licences, co-working spaces, affordable printing services and translation support. We were encouraged by the strong international interest in the Onshur model during the event, and we have already scheduled several follow-up meetings to explore potential areas of collaboration.'

US Senate permits arms sales to Qatar, UAE amidst controversy over jet gifted to Trump
Arms sales to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have been given the go-ahead after a Democratic Party-led effort to halt them failed in a US Senate vote on Wednesday. The resolutions failed 39-56, allowing the deal to proceed. Democrats had introduced legislation in the Republican-controlled Senate to block weapons sales to the two Gulf states over allegations of corruption. Lawmakers alleged that the Pentagon's acceptance of a $400m Qatari jet and an Emirati firm's recent investment in a Trump-affiliated cryptocurrency had compromised the integrity of the sales. The resolutions sought to stymie a $1.9bn weapons sale to Qatar and a $1.3bn weapons sale to the UAE. UAE first in MENA for gender equality, makes global gains in political empowerment

Globally, it claimed the 69th spot out of 148 countries, jumping five places from last year and outperforming several European economies like Italy, Greece, and WEF's Global Gender Gap Report, published on Wednesday, also positioned the UAE as third among the world's fastest-improving countries since the report's inaugural release in 2006. It is one of just four nations this year, alongside Mexico, Nicaragua, and Rwanda, to join the ranks of economies that have achieved full gender parity in parliamentary representation.A widely referenced tool for tracking the evolution of gender equality, the report focuses on four key areas: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. Each country's score reflects the percentage of the gender gap that has been closed, with 1 representing full parity (100%).The UAE's overall score reached 72.4% in 2025, putting it firmly in first place in the Middle East and North Africa (61.7% average) and well ahead of the global average of 68.8%. A Standout in Political Representation, EducationPolitical empowerment remains one of the country's standout achievements - a domain where gender gaps have historically been the widest. A regional leader, the UAE ranked 32nd globally on this subindex, marking a jump of eight positions from the previous edition of the report. It holds first place globally for women's representation in parliament, sharing the top spot with other countries that achieved full parity in this subcategory, a result of its policy of equal participation in the Federal National gains extend beyond the halls of government. This year's report finds that 68.8% of the overall gap has been closed globally, up just 0.3 percentage points from 2024. Political empowerment continues to be the category where the world has gained the most ground, with a nine-point improvement since 2006. However, even with this relative momentum, the report estimates it will still take over a century to reach full global gender parity.
