Culinary TVET creating high-income chefs, says Perak MB

IPOH: Cooking is no longer just a skill, but a driver of innovation and economic growth, powered by Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said TVET plays an increasingly significant role in transforming the culinary field.
"Cooking is no longer viewed merely as a technical skill, but as a form of art and innovation with high economic value.
"With exposure through competitions like this, young talents are more motivated to pursue culinary arts as a proud and professional career," he said during the opening of the Malaysia Culinary World Cup (MCWC) 2025 at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah here today.
A total of 800 contestants from across the country, along with representatives from 16 other nations, are taking part in the competition.
With 65 categories, MCWC is among the most comprehensive culinary championships globally.
Saarani added that digital transformation has further accelerated growth in the sector.
"Today, we see how digital approaches are reshaping the industry from virtual kitchen services and app-based food delivery, to social media marketing and online chef training.
"All of this makes the food industry more inclusive and dynamic," he said.
He said it was not an exaggeration to describe the MCWC as a reflection of Malaysia's increasingly mature and progressive culinary ecosystem.
"And as host, Perak is in a strategic position to lead this transformation, supported by TVET, local talent, pro-business government policies, and the people's strong appreciation for culinary heritage.
"I urge all stakeholders namely government agencies, the private sector, educational institutions, professional bodies, and the public to continue supporting efforts to strengthen the national food industry.
"This includes encouraging youth to pursue skills-based fields and to view culinary arts as a respectable, rewarding career path," he said.
In a press conference later, Saarani said that the culinary field is no longer limited to cooking and presentation, but encompasses the creativity and innovation needed to showcase talent in a competitive global space.
"It's timely that here in Perak, we're also launching a large-scale TVET initiative and one of its key areas is culinary training.
"I've always said, don't underestimate the culinary field. Chefs can earn high incomes and are now held in high regard.
"Many have represented Malaysia abroad and can proudly showcase their achievements," he said.
Saarani said he had directed all community colleges and TVET institutions in Perak to give equal attention to culinary education alongside technical disciplines.
He also expressed confidence that many young participants would benefit from the experience and guidance of senior chefs throughout the event.

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia must be a pioneer in cross-border apprenticeship programmes within Asean to boost regional integration, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said this is one way the regional bloc will shape a workforce that is 'inclusive, future-ready and poised to lead the global technical and vocational education and training industry'. 'A student from the Philippines can train in Malaysia, an Indonesian in Vietnam, and a Thai graduate in Singapore, turning Asean integration into a living reality through the movement of skills and knowledge. 'And perhaps, from this very gathering, we can establish a new regional movement – the Asean Green and Digital Skills Task Force,' he said at the Asean TVET Conference here today. Zahid, who is also the chairman of the National TVET Council, said such a task force would unite Asean with 'concrete actions, measurable targets and mutual support' to cultivate the talent needed by the region. The two-day conference, jointly hosted by the Human Resource Development Corporation and Skills Development Fund Corporation, seeks to provide a dynamic platform to facilitate knowledge exchange, foster innovation, and build strategic partnerships in support of Asean's digital and green transformation. It is also one of the flagship platforms of the Asean Year of Skills 2025, an initiative under Malaysia's Asean chairmanship to accelerate skills development, promote regional mobility, and prepare the Asean workforce for emerging economic and technological shifts. Zahid also called for insightful discussions on skills mismatch, the rising demand for digital and green talent, and driving innovation. 'I have instructed my officers to capture these insights because I will not allow this to be mere dialogue. 'It must spark policies that meet market needs, open opportunities for all, make employers true partners, and fast-track cutting-edge learning,' he said. In June, Bernama reported Zahid as saying student enrolment in TVET institutions rose to 436,285 last year, with 53.5% of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders opting for TVET pathways. Asean development of EV industry Speaking at the conference, human resources minister Steven Sim noted that OpenAI last week launched its GPT-5 artificial intelligence system, which he said can deliver information of a higher order and faster 'than a PhD expert'. 'This has confirmed our suspicion for the past few years. AI replaces conventional academically-trained personnel,' he said. Sim said AI can write code, produce high-level designs, solve complicated maths and generate speeches and other expert statements. However, he said, the world still needs those who can build, repair, operate, communicate, supervise and organise, making it necessary for Asean to have a more collaborative approach towards the 21st century economy. He said such collaboration may be seen in the electric vehicle industry, for example. 'We should leverage our core competencies to develop an Asean EV industry, rather than have a zero-sum competition to the bottom,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia now records a 95.1 per cent job placement rate for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates, who are also now included under the expanded minimum wage framework, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today. He said this reflects that skills training is finally aligning with job opportunities. "53.56 per cent of the country's secondary school leavers in 2024 chose TVET as their first option, marking a significant shift in national education trends. "There are now more than 430,000 students enrolled nationwide, and applications to national TVET institutions have surpassed 200,000," he said at the opening of the Asean TVET Conference (ATVET) 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). Zahid, who chairs the National TVET Council, said the government's transformation agenda aims to ensure training remains relevant to market needs, inclusive across all communities, and coordinated under a single national vision. "When I was entrusted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2023 to chair the National TVET Council, I knew this was more than just a policy role," he said. He said Malaysia's TVET ecosystem is being positioned as a regional hub for training and certification, with efforts to attract students from other Asean countries while maintaining opportunities for Malaysians. "Our goal is not just to produce skilled workers, but to make Malaysia a credible reference centre for TVET in Asean," he said. Zahid highlighted Malaysia's international collaborations, from 5,125 industrial placements in China, to partnerships with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of AI in Abu Dhabi, and skills exchanges with Japan, Germany, and Australia. "In this era, the success of one nation in TVET is no longer enough. "Our workforce is increasingly regional, and our challenges are shared. This is why Malaysia proposed the establishment of an Asean TVET Certification & Excellence Hub. "We have gone to the world to strengthen our agenda, ensuring our talent is globally competitive," he said. These TVET reforms form part of a national mission to propel Malaysia into the world's top 20 of the Global Innovation Index and to create 1.2 million high-value jobs in manufacturing and the digital economy within the next five years. In June, Zahid said Malaysia was forging strategic partnerships with international educational institutions and industry players, including those from the United Kingdom, to develop a regionally recognised certification and a centre of excellence for TVET. The two-day conference is jointly organised by the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) and the Skills Development Fund Corporation, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Asean. Held under the Asean Year of Skills (AYOS) 2025, the conference brings together over 1,000 delegates, including policymakers, industry leaders and educators, to address skills gaps, share best practices, and explore strategies for future-ready workforce development. Also present at the opening ceremony were Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, Human Resources Ministry secretary-general Datuk Azman Mohd Yusof, HRD Corp chairman Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid, and HRD Corp chief executive officer Dr Syed Alwi Mohamed Sultan. Key discussion areas include strengthening regional collaboration within Asean, bridging skills gaps, aligning TVET with industrial transformation, and breaking barriers to make TVET more inclusive for women, youth, and marginalised communities.

He said the task force could be established by building on the momentum of the ongoing Asean TVET Conference 2025, serving as a platform for concrete actions, measurable targets, and mutual support to nurture the talent the region needs. "This is how Asean will shape a workforce that is inclusive, future-ready, and poised to lead the global TVET industry," he said when opening the two-day conference at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre today. He added that discussions at the conference must lead to tangible outcomes, rather than remain mere dialogue. "At this conference, I see there will be discussions on skills mismatch, the rising demand for digital and green talent, and the drive for innovation. "I have instructed my officers to capture these insights because I will not allow this to be mere dialogue. "It must spark policies that meet market needs, open opportunities for all, make employers true partners, and fast-track cutting-edge learning," he said. Zahid, who chairs the National TVET Council, also renewed calls for a regional skills recognition framework to ensure that TVET graduates from any Asean country have their qualifications recognised across the bloc, creating a single labour market for skilled workers. He said such a framework would open more employment opportunities, address skills shortages, and strengthen economic integration. Highlighting Malaysia's own approach, Zahid said the country's TVET transformation was anchored on three guiding pillars: integrating the efforts of 12 ministries under one vision to eliminate silos and duplication, aligning skills training with market needs, and ensuring inclusivity so that no community, however remote, is left behind. "These pillars form the backbone of the National TVET Policy 2030, a clear roadmap for transformation," he said. In June, Zahid had said that Malaysia was forging strategic partnerships with international educational institutions and industry players, including those from the United Kingdom, to develop a regionally recognised certification and a centre of excellence for TVET. This initiative is part of the government's goal not only to produce skilled workers, but also to make Malaysia a recognised reference centre for TVET training and certification in Asean. As for the conference today, the event is jointly organised by the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) and the Skills Development Fund Corporation, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Asean. Held under the banner of the Asean Year of Skills (AYOS) 2025, ATVET 2025 brings together policymakers, industry leaders, TVET institutions and international organisations to address issues, share best practices and explore strategies for advancing technical and vocational education and training. With more than 1,000 delegates, including government representatives, industry professionals, academics and the public, the conference serves as a platform for dialogue that drives action, supporting Asean's workforce transformation goals and sustainable economic growth. Harnessing green skills is among the conference's priorities, with a session on "Green Platform: Driving Asean's Digital and Green Transformation."
