Fathers and sons bond at ‘Knipmes' braai
'Knipmes' refers to a pocket knife used to cut the braai meat right from the grill. Fathers and sons alike had several grills and smokers to choose from different meats.
Games, raffles, stalls and competitions were among the activities at the braai this weekend, the second annual braai held at the school.
Deputy Principal of Laerskool Totiusdal, Stefan van Staden, said the braai not only serves as a fundraising event for the school but also provides a bonding experience for fathers and sons.
'Last year we had about 300 people and 13 sheep, and this year it was about 600 and 19 sheep on the spit braai. We'd like to thank our sponsors, the men who came out to help today and the community as well. We can't thank them enough for the support they give to the school,' Van Staden said.
Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for more events that the school will be hosting throughout the rest of the year. The next event is a mother-daughter night.

‘Ladies first' at Zappas Women's Day bash
Zappas Restaurant celebrated Women's Day with a lively celebration on Saturday, featuring a world record attempt and a focus on 'old-school' gentlemanly respect for women. Restaurant manager Chrisna Oosthuizen said the event formed part of the eatery's month-long Ladies First campaign. For a whole month, her restaurant is embracing the 'Ladies First' theme, encouraging a nod to old-school courtesy with a world-record attempt. 'This is to remind the ladies that although we are in a man's world, we are still women. We should still be treated like women and with equality.' The goal was to gather at least 472 women in the bar at exactly 18:00. This would have made it the biggest gathering of women in one bar at the same time. All the women who turned out were treated to free punch, special menus, and souvenirs that would leave them feeling seen and appreciated during Women's Month. Although the turnout was spirited and the energy vibrant, they ultimately did not manage to break the record. 'This is not only about breaking a record but also about reclaiming space for women in an atmosphere that felt both celebratory and respectful, where they were the honoured guests,' she said. Attendee Kgomotso Madumo said the event was a welcome chance to relax. 'It's not every day that women get treated like queens for free. I came with my friends and we felt safe and appreciated. The free punch was a nice touch,' she said. Another guest, Karin van der Westhuizen, said she enjoyed the atmosphere and message behind the day. 'The idea of reminding men to be gentlemen is beautiful. In a world where violence against women is still so high, events like these are important for awareness and unity,' she said. Dog fair fetches big support for shelters
The Proud Dog Salon recently hosted a charity dog fair where Centurion residents and animal lovers came together to support it. Hosted by animal lover Dawn Carter, the event took place at the Doringkloof Mall and drew generous donations from animal lovers across the area. According to Carter, the event was aimed at raising funds and food donations for various animal shelters, including the Tshwane SPCA. 'People had to bring a bag of dog or cat food, a blanket or contribute a small entry fee – every cent and item went directly to local animal causes,' she explained. She said she had worked with dogs since 1981. She bred labradors in her younger years and has been deeply involved in animal welfare ever since. 'My love for animals, especially dogs and cats, is insurmountable. I just felt I needed to assist somehow, and this was one small way to make a difference.' She said a R500 cash donation was earmarked for the care of the feral cats living at the mall. 'All of the food and supplies were distributed to Woodrock Animal Rescue, the SPCA, and a group of dedicated women who feed the mall's feral cat population.' Carter said she believes events like these have a huge impact, not just on the animals, but also on the people who care for them. She added that plans are already underway for another charity fair in late February or March next year. 'The main idea is to have a fun morning in the sun and raise as much food as possible for all the homeless dogs and cats,' she explained. The event also had a dog trainer who showed how to train your dog, and Leigh Roos from Good Scents gave a demo and insights about sniff courses. Carter said people are also welcome to drop off donations at her salon at the Doringkloof Mall at any time. 'Whether it's a bag of food, a soft blanket, new or old, or just showing up to support the cause, it is very much appreciated.' Do you have more information about the story?
