Air India plane crash: Mortal remains of pilot Capt Sumeet Sabharwal reach Mumbai, father pays emotional tribute
The mortal remains of flight pilot Captain Sumeet Sabharwal were brought to Mumbai, an official said on Tuesday. Sabharwal was flying London-bound Air India flight AI171 that crashed soon after taking off in Ahmedabad on June 12.
Visuals shared by news agency ANI showed the father of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, Pushkaraj, paying an emotional tribute to his son outside their residence in Powai, Mumbai.
Businessman Niranjan Hiranandani and local MLA Dilip Lande were among those who visited Sabharwal's residence to pay respects to him.
Sumeet Sabharwal's father Pushkaraj Sabharwal and other relatives were also seen paying homage.
A hearse carrying the pilot's mortal remains later left for Chakala electric crematorium, the official said.
The London-bound Air India flight AI-171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one on board the plane died along with 29 on the ground when the aircraft smashed into a medical complex.
The ill-fated flight was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal along with First Officer Clive Kundar. While Sabharwal had 8,200 hours of flying experience, Kundar 1,100 hours, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) earlier said in a statement.
'The aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (on June 12) from Runway 23. It gave a MAYDAY Call to ATC, but thereafter no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC,' the DGCA had said.

An IndiGo flight from Goa to Lucknow suffered severe mid-air turbulence on Monday due to adverse weather conditions. The airline, in a statement, confirmed the incident and said the aircraft landed safely. In two self-recorded videos, a female passenger could be heard explaining the gravity of the situation. She said the flight suddenly lost altitude minutes after takeoff. The passenger also says she, along with others on the flight, were scared for their life, especially in the wake of the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. In another video, the woman could be seen crying in horror, saying she hoped she would reach her home, in Lucknow, safely. Commenting on the incident, IndiGo, in an official statement, said flight 6E 6811 landed safely in Lucknow. The airline, however, did not divulge any further details. 'IndiGo flight 6E 6811 from North Goa to Lucknow on June 16, experienced turbulence momentarily due to prevailing active monsoon weather conditions in western India," the airline said. The incident comes five days after an Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad claimed 270 lives on June 12. A total of 135 victims had so far been identified through DNA matching and 101 bodies were handed over to their families, officials said on Tuesday. Authorities were carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged. 'Till Tuesday morning, 135 DNA samples have been matched, and 101 bodies have already been handed over to the respective families. Of these 101 deceased, five were not on board the flight," Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's medical superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi, told reporters. The 101 deceased whose mortal remains have been handed over to their relatives belonged to different parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan and Diu, he added. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 persons on board crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 pm. While 241 persons on board the London-bound aircraft died, one passenger miraculously survived. The crash also killed 29 persons on the ground, including five MBBS students. A video has surfaced showing how people in nearby hostels tried to save their lives by climbing down from balconies after the London-bound Air India flight, with 242 on board, crashed into the BJ Medical College Hostel near Ahmedabad airport.
