Government of Canada awards $74 million to top-performing Housing Accelerator Fund communities

Yahoo22-03-2025

OTTAWA, ON, March 22, 2025 /CNW/ - To make progress towards solving the housing crisis we need to build more homes at prices that Canadians can afford, faster. To do this we need to end restrictive zoning and speed up permitting, and add greater density, especially near transit and post-secondary institutions. The Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) will cut this red tape and fast-track at least 112,000 new homes by 2028, which cities and regions estimate will lead to the creation of over 750,000 new homes for people in towns, cities, and Indigenous communities across Canada over the next decade.
Today, the Government of Canada announced that 27 top-performing Housing Accelerator Fund communities will receive additional funding as part of the first round of the program. This extra funding of almost $74 million will help these communities go even further to accelerate housing, fast tracking an additional 2219 housing units over the next two years. To be considered a top performer, communities met their unit forecasts and delivered on their HAF Action Plan commitments for the first year. They also proposed additional initiatives to accelerate housing making them eligible to receive up to 10% of the value of their original agreement in additional funding.
HAF requires action plans from local governments, unlocking funding to ensure the timely implementation of housing initiatives, with subsequent payments upon delivering results. Local governments are encouraged to think big and be bold in their approaches, which could include accelerating project timelines, allowing increased housing density, and encouraging affordable housing units. The list of communities receiving funding under these agreements is in an Appendix to this release.
The Government of Canada is making life more affordable for Canadians—and housing is key to our work. We will continue to work with provincial, territorial, and municipal governments, as well as Indigenous partners, to keep building more homes for Canadians, faster.
Quote:
"Our government is committed to removing barriers and cutting red tape to enable housing development, and this additional funding will help leading communities do just that." – The Honourable Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities
Quick Facts:
Launched in March 2023, the Housing Accelerator Fund is a $4.4 billion initiative from the Government of Canada that will run until 2027-2028. The first round of funding totalled $4 billion, and Budget 2024 added an additional $400 million to this program.
The Housing Accelerator Fund is part of Canada's National Housing Strategy and Canada's Housing Plan, the most ambitious federal housing plan in over 40 years. Progress on programs and initiatives are updated quarterly on the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada (HICC) website. The Housing and Infrastructure Project Map shows affordable housing projects that have been developed.
As of December 2024, the federal government has committed $60.09 billion to support the creation of over 156,000 units and the repair of over 298,000 units. These measures prioritize those in greatest need, including seniors, Indigenous Peoples, people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and women and children fleeing violence.
In Budget 2024, the federal government committed an additional $400 million to incentivize more local governments to fast-track home construction, resulting in an additional 12,000 new homes permitted over the next four years.

In the news today: World leaders, former PMs and protestors expected ahead of G7

Here is a roundup of stories from The Canadian Press designed to bring you up to speed... Groups planning protests for G7 summit in Alberta Protests during the upcoming G7 leaders summit in Kananaskis, Alta., may be starkly different than demonstrations happening this week against immigration crackdowns in the United States. A University of Toronto research group that has been monitoring the meetings of world leaders since 1998 says its analysis shows Canadian protests are more peaceful and smaller. But similar to the recent demonstrations in Los Angeles, they're likely to be against the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. "The Los Angeles protests will add another (issue) the protesters going there already care about, but it won't do anything much more than that," said John Kirton, director of the G7 Research Group. Former PMs speaking at conference ahead of G7 Two former Canadian prime ministers and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are among the notable names set to speak at a conference today ahead of next week's G7 leaders' summit in Kananaskis. The conference is hosted by the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy and its G7 research group and will feature a series of panels about past summits and international affairs. Former prime minister Jean Chrétien will speak about past summits hosted in Canada alongside his former deputy prime minister and finance minister John Manley. Former prime minister Joe Clark is to give the closing keynote speech and offer his thoughts on the day's discussions. Smith faces raucous town hall on coal policy Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and three of her ministers got an earful on Wednesday night from southern Alberta locals at a rowdy, hours-long town hall to discuss the province's coal policy. About 500 people, dressed in cowboy hats, belt buckles, and jeans, packed a community hall in Fort Macleod, Alta., for an event marked by heckling, competing applause and placards. "If we are not prepared to look and find middle-ground solutions to allow for industries to proceed while reducing our environmental footprint, you're going to find that different industries become the next on the hit list," Smith said through a chorus of protesting voices and verbal jabs. "Banning industries is just not something we are going to do." $30B in new investments needed for mineral demand A newly released report estimates Canada will need at least $30 billion in new capital investments by 2040 if it wants to meet domestic demand for the critical minerals key to a green economy transition. But the Canadian Climate Institute's report says cutting back on environmental safeguards and Indigenous consultation to speed up those projects is likely to backfire. The report released Thursday says those cutbacks can lead to delays later on, due to community opposition or litigation. The think tank's latest report comes as the federal government, along with Ontario and British Columbia, face major pushback from First Nations and environmental groups to legislation intended to speed up mining project approvals. N.L. hydrogen companies behind in land bills Newfoundland and Labrador is owed millions of dollars in fees from green energy companies, underlining growing doubts about whether promises of major projects and multi-billion dollar investments will pan out. Six companies are vying to create new operations in the province that would use wind energy to produce hydrogen for exports overseas. Figures obtained by The Canadian Press reveal some owe a collective total of $13.7 million in fees due in 2024 for the use of Crown land. Russell Williams, an associate political science professor at Memorial University in St. John's, N.L., said he's not surprised the companies have land fees outstanding. 'I think it highlights the extent to which the public should be skeptical about megaprojects, and about governments getting very carried away, very early, with the idea that there are huge benefits from these kinds of natural resource developments,' Williams said in a recent interview. However, the province insists the money will be collected. Kendrick Lamar to perform in Toronto tonight Kendrick Lamar is set to perform in Toronto tonight in his first swing through Drake's hometown since the pair started feuding last year. The American rapper stops in the city for two nights on his Grand National Tour with SZA, and some Drake fans say they plan to congregate outside the Rogers Centre. An Instagram post shared across social media promises a so-called "OVO Takeover" near the venue, referring to Drake's brand, October's Very Own. The post says Drake fans want to "show Kendrick whose city this is," but that there will be "no hate, no drama — just pure Toronto energy." A spokesperson for Drake did not respond to a request for comment. --- This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 12, 2025 The Canadian Press

$30B in new investments needed to meet Canada's critical mineral demand: report

TORONTO — A newly released report estimates Canada will need at least $30 billion in new capital investments by 2040 if it wants to meet domestic demand for the critical minerals key to a green economy transition. The report says Canadian governments should support Indigenous participation and reduce environmental risks as part of efforts to reduce regulatory delays. It says Canada has a big opportunity to capitalize on the surging domestic and global demand for critical minerals to build the batteries, solar panels and electric vehicles required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It estimates domestic demand alone for six key critical minerals, including lithium and copper, will reach $16 billion by 2040 if Canada keep up its climate policies, with almost half of that coming from EV manufacturers. To meet that demand, the think tank estimates Canadian mining projects will need a total of $30 billion in capital investments, and even more if the industry wants to help satiate international demand too. The report says that's also likely a lowball figure since it excludes major cost overruns that often plague mining projects. The estimated domestic need "vastly exceeds" current investment in the sector, which averaged about $2 billion per year from 2018 to 2023, the report said. The report suggests there's a role for governments to step in to support the sector with either equity investments or financial risk-sharing agreements. But it should not come at the expense of Indigenous consultation or environmental oversight, the authors say. "Successful projects that are being developed fast are the ones that have participation from Indigenous communities, that have adhered to the highest environmental standard," said co-author Marisa Beck, the think tank's clean growth research director. Critics say recently passed Bill 15 in B.C. and Bill 5 in Ontario gives those provinces sweeping powers to exempt mining projects from environmental oversight and undermines constitutional obligations to consult First Nations. The provincial governments disagree and say the legislation will help speed up approvals without sacrificing First Nations rights or environmental protections. Ottawa has also faced pushback to its legislation intended to speed up infrastructure approvals. The authors of Thursday's report declined to comment on the specifics of those legislative efforts, but it did put forward several policy recommendations. Governments should also support Indigenous communities exercising their right to self-determination and economic participation, such as through funding for Indigenous-led environmental assessments, the report says. Elsewhere, the report recommends provinces strengthen mining regulations to reduce environmental risks and liabilities, such as requiring producers to make their closure plans publicly available. LONGi Officially Launches HIBC Technology and True 700W module on the SNEC2025

SHANGHAI, June 12, 2025 /CNW/ -- On June 11, LONGi officially released its newly developed HIBC technology and mass-produced module products at the 18th (2025) International Solar Photovoltaic Exhibition (SNEC). HIBC creates a precedent in the industry, achieving a power of over 700W for the first time based on the standard size of 2382mm×1134mm, and the efficiency of mass-produced modules is close to 26%, comprehensively leading the efficiency of photovoltaic modules into the '25%+Era'. HIBC, a Better Solution for 'High Value and Reliability' HIBC (Hybrid Interdigitated Back-Contact), high-low temperature composite passivated back contact technology, which integrates the characteristics of HJT and BC, and realizes large-scale mass production of modules for the first time in the world. Zhong Baoshen, Chairman of LONGi, said at the press conference that this is another peak climbed by LONGi in technological innovation and another major innovation by LONGi on the BC technology route. In April 2025, certified by the Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH) in Germany, the conversion efficiency of HIBC cells reached 27.81%, creating a new world record. Zhong Baoshen said that conversion efficiency is not only the lighthouse of photovoltaic technology but also the lifeblood of photovoltaic products. LONGi has always actively called for "improving power on the same area or standard size, that is, increasing unit yield." "Simply improving efficiency through physical stacking and area expansion brings limited customer value; at the same time, the risks of reliability and quality are obvious after the area is expanded." Zhong Baoshen said. Although LONGi's HPBC 2.0 products have formed a leading edge in the market-72-piece standard-size modules, continuing to lead TOPCon products by 30W-LONGi has not stopped technological innovation and product R&D. 259W/㎡ LONGi First Proposes 'Power Density' The HIBC technology product officially unveiled at the press conference achieves a power of over 700W with a standard size of 2382mm×1134mm, a power density of more than 259W/㎡, and a module efficiency of 25.9%. "This is currently the most efficient industrial photovoltaic product in the world. Through the improvement of efficiency, we called unit yield, the unity of high value and reliability is truly achieved." Zhong Baoshen said. Compared with other 700W modules of the same power in the industry (most of the sizes are 2384mm×1303mm), this module has an area 0.4㎡ smaller, but the power density is 34W/㎡ higher, completely breaking the previous logic that "large size brings high power." This is also the first time that LONGi has put forward the concept of "power density" in the industry. "LONGi has always adhered to technological innovation, always adhered to high-quality standards, and put customer interests first." The power density of this module is as high as 259W/㎡, which will be a more valuable choice for both the increasingly scarce land and the roof. Another great value brought by HIBC technology is to comprehensively lead the efficiency of mass-produced photovoltaic modules into the "25%+Era". As we all know, in the PERC era, the module efficiency was22%+, TOPCon brought 23%+, and the gate of 24%+ module mass production efficiency was opened by BC. Now, the 700W module released by LONGi is the result of superimposing HJT high-quality passivation technology on BC. "We have taken less than three years to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic modules to a new level, which also fully proves the high expandability of BC technology-it has a larger efficiency improvement space," Zhong Baoshen said. "Father of Solar Energy", Professor Martin Green of the University of New South Wales in Australia, also highly affirmed LONGi's innovation in BC technology at the press conference. "We recently updated the world solar cell efficiency list, and LONGi's HIBC technology topped, ranking first, which is also due to LONGi's unremitting efforts on the BC technology track." In addition, HIBC products use high-density packaging technology, and the cell screen occupation ratio is increased from 93.2% to 95.1%, which can greatly increase the light absorption area and truly achieve a balance between reliability and high efficiency. On May 7 this year, the EcoLife series, officially released by LONGi at the Intersolar exhibition, is a mass-produced product based on HIBC technology. The mass-produced cell efficiency of this module is 27.3%, and the module efficiency exceeds 25%. Starting from the End, Further Building a BC Ecosystem At this press conference, Zhong Baoshen also disclosed the achievements of the BC ecosystem construction since it officially launched in 2023. As of the end of May 2025, LONGi has cumulatively carried out technical docking with 191 global partners, reached 55 cooperation, covering 7 major fields including silicon wafers, cells, modules, system solutions, hydrogen energy, biomass, and engineering technology, and achieved initial revenue of 1.95 billion yuan. At the SNEC on May 24, 2023, LONGi officially released the STAR Innovation Ecological Collaboration Platform to the world, aiming to build a global collaborative innovation ecosystem with the "Global Zero Carbon Technology Innovation Center" as the core. On July 3, 2024, at the opening ceremony of the Global Distributed R&D Center, LONGi officially announced the operation rules for building the BC ecosystem, including three value propositions, three cooperation principles, and four modules of partner evaluation, model selection, technical empowerment, and value sharing, aiming to ensure implementation through a professional organization, full-chain process, digital system, and full-cycle monitoring. "Our original intention is still to start from the end and be committed to planting the black land that leads the healthy, benign, and sustainable development of the photovoltaic industry," Zhong Baoshen said. In the future, LONGi will further expand and deepen cooperation to improve and amplify the value of BC technology, so that it can penetrate into thousands of industries and households.
