Washington - American rock star Bruce Springsteen released a surprise EP on May 21, with the six-track album including scathing criticism of US President Donald Trump that prompted an online diatribe from the Republican billionaire last week.
The EP, titled Land Of Hope And Dreams – the name of his ongoing tour – features recordings of four songs performed live in Manchester, England on May 14.
Two tracks feature Springsteen, 75, describing his disappointment with Mr Trump's 'corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration', although he does not name the president directly.
The comments had prompted the right-wing populist to label Springsteen an 'obnoxious jerk' last week, and on May 21, Mr Trump posted a video edited to make it seem like he had hit the New Jersey rocker with a golf drive.
On May 19, Mr Trump had gone further than mere rhetoric, calling for a 'major investigation' into Springsteen, genre-smashing music icon Beyonce and other celebrities.
He alleged – without evidence and in the face of denials by those involved – that the celebrities had been paid millions of dollars to endorse Ms Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent in the 2024 presidential election.
The collection of tracks released on May 21 featured Springsteen's full comments as he introduced the songs Land Of Hope And Dreams and My City In Ruins.
'In my home, the America I love, the America I have written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration,' he said, addressing the Manchester crowd.
'Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experience to rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring.'
In the second introduction track, he decried 'some very weird, strange and dangerous s*** going on out there right now'.
'In America, they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent,' he said, while also taking aim at the 'sadistic pleasure' some were taking in launching crackdowns on migrants, the poor and workers.
Springsteen then launched into a spirited rendition of My City In Ruins, ending with a rousing repetition of the words: 'Come on, rise up.' AFP

US imposes visa bans on India travel agents for facilitating illegal migration

PHOTO: REUTERS WASHINGTON – The US State Department said on May 19 that it was imposing visa restrictions on owners and other staff of India-based travel agencies that it says knowingly facilitate illegal migration to the United States. An unspecified number of unnamed people linked to travel agencies in India were being hit with visa bans under the Immigration and Nationality Act based on information gathered by the US mission to India, department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said in a statement. Washington often issues visa bans without publishing the names of those targeted. 'We will continue to take steps to impose visa restrictions against owners, executives and senior officials of travel agencies to cut off alien smuggling networks,' Ms Bruce said, without detailing how the travel agents had facilitated illegal migration. The move comes amid President Donald Trump's broad crackdown on migration to the United States and efforts to deport undocumented immigrants in the country. The US Embassy in New Delhi has repeatedly posted on its social media sites a warning to Indian nationals visiting the United States not to remain in the country beyond their authorised period of stay, saying they will face deportation and a permanent ban from entering the country for doing so. She left Wednesday's hearing shouting that she was innocent and said she had now been charged with illicit enrichment. "I am a political prisoner. All the charges are because of my legal work, due to my denunciation of corruption in this government," Lopez added. Former Biden spokeswoman quits US Democratic party
[WASHINGTON] Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has quit the Democratic party after its 'betrayal' of Joe Biden to become an independent, her publisher said in a statement on Wednesday announcing a new book. Jean-Pierre, 50, who served under Biden for two years, will explain the decision in her book, titled Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, publishing house Hachette said. Jean-Pierre blazed a trail as the first Black and gay presidential spokesperson. 'Jean-Pierre didn't come to her decision to be an Independent lightly,' the Hachette statement said as it announced the book, which will be published on Oct 21. 'She takes us through the three weeks that led to Biden's abandoning his bid for a second term and the betrayal by the Democratic Party that led to his decision,' the statement added. Biden, who was 81 at the time, dropped his bid for a second term after a disastrous debate performance against Republican Donald Trump renewed concerns about his health and mental acuity. Sign Up Sign Up Jean-Pierre strongly defended Biden after the debate, when a series of senior Democrats including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed him to step aside. But she and other former White House aides have since faced questions about whether they covered up the impact of Biden's age, fanned by the publication of another book by two journalists, Original Sin. The revelations have also prompted a bout of Democratic infighting as party members seek to distance themselves from Biden's legacy and fight back against Trump ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Jean-Pierre's book will however also push back at what her publisher called a 'torrent of disinformation and misinformation.' She would also urge people to look beyond 'blind loyalty' to the current two-party system and share 'why Americans must step beyond party lines to embrace life as Independents.' AFP
