Cricket diplomacy can help mend fences: Moin Khan

As arch-rivals India and Pakistan gear up for a highly-anticipated, mouth-watering clash in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on Sunday, former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper Moin Khan has advocated the resumption of bilateral matches between the two countries, hailing the healing power of sport.
Moin Khan, speaking to Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net) in an exclusive interview said: "Both Pakistan and India should use cricket diplomacy to mend fences and resume bilateral cricket for the sake of the game and for the millions of fans on either side of the border awaiting to see Pak-India matches."
Khan, who was a key member of the Pakistan team throughout his outstanding career, said India's refusal to tour Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was disappointing.
"Unfortunately, the Indian cricket team is not coming to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. When all the top teams are coming for this mega ICC event, then why can't India?
"I assure you that millions of fans here are eager to watch live mega stars like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Rishab Pant and others in Lahore and Karachi, but it is really sad that they have not come to Pakistan this time."
Recalling his association with the Indian players, Khan said he has been great friends with Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar.
"Pakistani and Indian cricketers have mostly enjoyed a great camaraderie off the field while they have been fierce rivals on it. We have shared some great moments on and off the field and I have a lot of fond memories of those days," he said.
Khan, while recollecting thrilling moments from the 2004 nail-biter in Karachi against India, added: "I can never in my life forget that thrilling one-day match in Karachi against India in 2004, in which Pakistan lost by just five runs while chasing 349 in front of a packed house.
"It was an extremely tense situation where both myself and Shoaib Malik were at the crease towards the end and Pakistan required 19 to win off 18 balls. I told Malik that since both of us were good runners between the wickets, we could do it with singles and doubles and should avoid taking any risks of skying the ball. However, on the very next delivery, Malik skied one and Mohammad Kaif took a dazzling running catch which turned the match in India's favour," he reminisced.
Moin Khan fondly recalled that it was a sight to behold when the 38,000 Karachi crowd gave a standing ovation to the Indian team on a well-deserved victory.
"Such great gestures highlight the hospitality traditions of the people of Pakistan who have always welcomed the Indian teams here.
"It is simply because we believe that sports should be above all kinds of politics and the millions of fans on either side of the border should be allowed to enjoy top-level cricket between the two sides," added Khan.
"I wish all the success to the Pakistan team and hope they comeback strongly despite the loss in the opener."

DURHAM: Former captain Jos Buttler scored a superb 96 off 59 balls, and Liam Dawson took four wickets on his international return, as England beat West Indies by 21 runs in the T20 series opener at Durham's Riverside ground on Friday. After making a 3-0 winning start to Harry Brook's captaincy in the one-dayers, England kept the momentum in the shorter format with an innings of 188-6 after winning the toss and batting first. West Indies finished on 167-9, with Romario Shepherd caught on the final ball of the match. Buttler, in at number three with England 16-1 after Ben Duckett was caught by West Indies captain Shai Hope off Shepherd, brought up his half century from 25 balls in the eighth over. The 34-year-old, who stepped down as white-ball captain last February following England's group-stage exit from the Champions Trophy, continued to look like a man relieved of a heavy burden as he hit six fours and four sixes. Needing just four for the century, he was out lbw to Joseph in the penultimate over. The tally was Buttler's highest T20 international score on home soil. West Indies were 33-2 off 5.2 overs after losing Johnson Charles for 18, stumped by Buttler off Dawson, and Hope caught by Duckett, who repaid his own dismissal in like-for-like fashion, for three off debutant Matthew Potts. England restricted the visitors to 44-2 at the end of the powerplay, compared to 78-1 at the same stage of the home innings. 'When you get 190 on the board, you can go out there and simplify everything. You can bowl defensively and they've got to come to you. Tonight, it worked. Pak-India doubles pair light up ITF event in Nigeria
The International Tennis Federation World Tennis Tours Junior does not get much attention but the event in Abuja, Nigeria attracted global recognition with the girls doubles event featuring a pair from Pakistan and India, learnt on Friday. The teenage girls partnered in the doubles event with the ITF projecting it as 'sports unite nation' theme amidst the recent tension between the South Asian neighbours. The two countries have fought three wars since independence from the British rule in 1947, with bilateral sporting ties on a halt. Only a few and far between sporting encounters happen between the two countries, with cricket the most hit sport. Amidst the tension, the latest tennis partnership of the two girls reminds of the Rohan Bopanna men's doubles partnership with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan for several years, with the pair known as the IndoPak Express. They were runners-up at the 2010 US Open Doubles event. Pakistan's Soha Ali and India's Sidhak Kaur, secured their spot in the girls' doubles semifinal after a 6-3, 6-5 victory over Nigerian pair of Fego Aiyetoma and Tolu Vyashi in straight sets, winning with a score of 6-3, 6-4. The victory got wide coverage in Nigeria and Pakistan with media outlets vying for interviews. On Thursday night, the Indo-Pak pairing lost to Goodnews Aina and Success Ogunjobi of Nigeria by a score line of 2-6, 2-6 in the semi finals, ending their chance of a title finish. Aisam showed happiness at the Indo-Pak partnership. 'As a player and President of Pakistan Tennis Federation, I really felt great that our Soha partnered with Sidhak in the ITF event," Aisam told 'I have always said that sports should be kept apart from political barriers. Sports unite people and that's the beauty of it." 'I have partnered with Rohan and other Indian players and got huge respect and friendship, because our culture is the same. The ITF allows players to choose their partners after a discussion before the event. Both the players did not speak to the media over fears of a backlash in their respective countries.

With the last remaining member of the old guard out of the picture, the stage is set for Alcaraz and Sinner to embark on the biggest clash so far in their already gripping rivalry. Both are unbeaten in Grand Slam finals, but that will change come Sunday. "The stage, it doesn't get any bigger now. Grand Slam finals against Carlos, it's a special moment for me and for him, too," said Sinner. "The tension you feel before the match and during the match is a little bit different in a way, because we are both very young, we are both different, but talented." Comparisons have already been made between the sport's new rivalry and those shared by the big three of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer, but Sinner said it was too early for such talk.
