More than 200 inmates escape Pakistan jail after earthquake
More than 200 prisoners escaped from a jail in Pakistan's largest city following an earthquake in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.Thousands of inmates broke down doors and the locks of their cells and shattered windows after they felt tremors shake the walls at Malir Jail in Karachi.Of those who escaped the prison, police said 80 inmates had been recaptured and searches were ongoing for more than 130 still at large. One prisoner was killed in the operation and two prison officers injured.A prison superintendent told the BBC inmates began shouting from their cells and barracks around midnight as they were terrified the building would collapse on top of them.
After the frenzy turned violent, police said they responded with warning shots, firing guns into the air. While many returned to their cells, others stormed the main gate in panic - with 216 inmates using the opportunity to escape the prison altogether.Police are now going door-to-door, visiting past residences to arrest those who are still on the run.The facility in the Malir district is Sindh province's second largest prison, and is over capacity. While it can accommodate up to 2,200 prisoners, there are at least 5,000 inmates there currently.
The minister for prisons in the province, Ali Hassan Zardari, has ordered an investigation and warned any officers at fault will be disciplined.The prison's superintendent told the BBC the incident is "not a security lapse, it's all due to a natural disaster".He said security teams at the prison were on high alert, and responded to the incident throughout.Families have been protesting outside the jail's main gates, and police said relatives of other inmates are frustrated that visits have been postponed.Additional reporting by Usman Zahid

Nottingham operator warns against 'dangerous' TikTok trend
A tram operator has warned against a "dangerous" TikTok it says is influencing young people to hold on to the back of trams while they are moving. Nottingham Express Transit (NET) said a so-called "tram surfing" trend had caused a "recent rise of a number of incidents".The firm said it had received a number of videos of incidents which it had shared with police. Managing director at NET Sarah Turner said the behaviour "could result in death or serious injury" and was not something the firm was taking lightly. 'Risk to life' "All of the footage and videos we've received of such incidents have been shared with the police who are now handling it as a criminal matter," she said. Nottinghamshire Police has been contacted for comment. Ms Turner said NET would be reaching out to schools of those caught engaging in the trend and schools in the area to "educate students of the severity" of the trend. She added: "Although incidents of this are usually very rare, anyone taking part in this trend, whether doing the challenge or filming it and sharing it online, is playing their part in publicising an extremely dangerous activity that ultimately could end someone's life."We'd like to remind the public of our strong measures that are in place to keep our network safe, including high quality CCTV cameras in all trams and tram stops, which means that every incident is recorded and handed over to the authorities."Anyone caught engaging in dangerous activities such as tram surfing will face the very real repercussions of their actions."

Police officers played ‘snog, marry, avoid' with images of sex workers
Police in Derbyshire played a game of 'snog, marry, avoid' while using images of suspected sex workers, a tribunal was told. Shafarat Mohammed sued the force for racial discrimination and harassment after a female colleague involved him in the game, which involves naming three people and asking someone to pick which one you would like to kiss, marry and avoid. At the hearing in Nottingham, the woman officer admitted she had 'jokingly' played the game with co-workers and included PC Mohammed in their discussion. In the tribunal's ruling, the judge said that playing the game at work could breach equality legislation. Employment Judge Stephen Shore suggested that the officers may have referred to the game, which has several names, by a cruder version. PC Mohammed claimed that during the discussion in May or June 2022, he was shown images of black women and was asked what he liked about one of them. He said he was 'embarrassed' and 'offended' by the questioning and felt it was inappropriate. 'Crass and inappropriate' PC Kate Northridge, another officer at Pear Tree Station in Derby, admitted to the hearing that a group of officers played the game with photos of suspect. She said she had been the one to include PC Mohammed in the game but she had not asked him specific questions about any of the images. Speaking about snog, marry, avoid, Judge Shore said: ' The game was crass and inappropriate. It casts no one who participated in it in a good light.' The judge added that playing the game 'could constitute harassment of a sexual nature', although he acknowledged that Mohammed had not made that claim. 'We agree with [him] that the questions were inappropriate,' he said. Racial discrimination and harassment claims The tribunal heard that PC Mohammed joined the force in November 2021 and completed his training in March the next year. He resigned less than a year later, in September 2022, and then made an employment tribunal claim for racial discrimination and harassment. The tribunal found there was no racial or religious element to it as the sex workers were of varying ethnicities. They also concluded that he was not asked questions about a specific black sex worker and that his credibility was undermined by a lack of consistency between his different accounts. PC Mohammed made several allegations including that a colleague called him a 'road man', he was 'humiliated' for eating home-made food, and told he was 'sh*t'. The officer also claimed that another PC said the custody team was 'all black and ethnics', he was asked about his familiarity with alcohol, and that he had been ostracised from team events. However, the tribunal found these allegations were either entirely fabricated by PC Mohammed or were given 'a retrospective gloss of alleged discrimination' in his witness statements which often contradicted each other. PC Mohammed, a Pakistani heritage Muslim, lost his case for racial and religious discrimination and harassment.

BREAKING NEWS Second man arrested on suspicion of murder over death of 'innocent' schoolboy, 16, who killed in hit and run by Audi that 'swerved towards e-bike riders'
A second man has been arrested on suspicion of murder over the death of an 'innocent' child killed in suspected a hit-and-run attack. Abdullah Yaha Al-Zaidy was tragically struck down by a grey Audi while walking along the pavement in Staniforth Road, Sheffield, on Wednesday afternoon. Detectives said the Audi appeared to swerve towards three e-bike riders, colliding with one of them before hitting the boy and driving off. The 16-year-old was taken to hospital after the incident in the Darnall area of the city on Wednesday but later died. South Yorkshire Police said a 26-year-old man, who had been detained on suspicion of assisting an offender, has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. It follows the arrest of a 20-year-old man on suspicion of the same offences in Kent on Thursday. Both men remain in custody. Detectives said they believe a grey Audi drove towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider, who suffered serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening. The Audi then collided with the teenager and failed to stop at the scene, officers said. Two people, a man aged 46 and a woman aged 45, who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have both been bailed pending further enquiries. Abdullah, known locally as Abdul, was reportedly walking to a nearby shop to meet his father with the two having plans to later eat together, when the tragedy happened. The community paid tribute to him in an announcement on social media, which said: 'May Allah grant him the highest ranks of Jannah and grant his family and friends strength and patience during this unimaginable time.' It added: 'It is deeply heartbreaking to see his photo—a boy always smiling, always full of joy. 'He worked tirelessly alongside his father and had plans to begin college soon.' Video footage shared online appears to show two e-bike riders and a motorcyclist travelling along the road before the grey Audi, driving in the opposite direction, suddenly veers across the carriageway. In harrowing footage, the motorcyclist narrowly misses the car while one of the e-bike riders is hit head on, being thrown into the air and into the hedge in front of a property. Less than a second later, the driver continues on a further 80ft, crashing into the 16-year-old who had just stopped walking on the pavement. The incident happened shortly after 4.50pm on Wednesday in Staniforth Road in the Darnall area Senior Investigating Officer in the case, Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood, said: 'This is a tragic incident in which an entirely innocent bystander, who was going about his daily business, has sadly lost his life. Our thoughts are with the boy's loved ones, and we remain focused on securing justice for them. 'We know that this incident will have caused concern in the local community, and we have a team of detectives working at pace to piece together the circumstances which unfolded. 'We're aware of footage being shared online and I'd like to reiterate our message to the public to withhold from speculating or circulating videos which may cause distress to the boy's family. 'If you have any footage, imagery or information that may help our investigation, then please share this directly with us – it may form an important part of our enquiries. We are also keen to hear from the riders of two electric bikes who were in the area at the time of the incident.' Mojid Khan said the boy came to rest at the gates of his Staniforth Road wholesale business, and his staff were the first on the scene after hearing the collision. He said he arrived half an hour later and was shocked to see what his CCTV system had recorded. Mr Khan said yesterday: 'When it happens on your doorstep, literally, it does affect you. It's quite horrific to see how it happens.' He said: 'I think it's a local lad that's passed away and another local lad that got injured on a motorbike. It's shocking for us as a community. 'The disturbing thing is that this is not the first time that this has happened. It seems every few months something like this is going on. 'I think that's a matter for our politicians to do something about.' He said: 'Tomorrow is our Eid festival. That's going to hit them (the boy's family) even harder. 'It should be a happy day. I'm really sad for the family. Their loss is going to be that much greater tomorrow.' Lauren, 31, who did not wish to give her surname, was giving CPR to the teenager and shouting to ask people to help. She said: 'I don't want to go in to detail, it was traumatic – a young, beautiful boy has lost his life to something he wasn't even involved in.'
