Mother, filled with grief, joins loved ones as they honor 10-year-old girl killed by fallen tree
Family and community members gathered Friday to honor the life of 10-year-old A'erica Dixon after she was killed when a tree fell on her family's home in southwest Atlanta.
Tears, songs, and balloons filled the skies over a park in Vine City to mourn A'erica.
A'erica's mother, Santice Dixon, spoke publicly for the first time since her daughter's death.
'The biggest fear as a parent is to be somewhere and not be able to save your child. I tried,' she told Channel 2's Brittany Kleinpeter.
The grieving mother shared more about her little girl, whom she affectionately called Tink.

'A'erica was one of a kind,' Santice said. 'One thing about A'erica, she loved family, and she brought all of us together as one.'
Family members said A'erica was sleeping with her grandmother when the tree came crashing through their home.
Her grandmother, Pricilla Dixon, remains hospitalized at Grady Hospital with a broken pelvis and a paralyzed right leg.
A GoFundMe account has been set up by the family to support Priscilla and her medical costs.
A'erica's funeral is planned for May 24.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man is accused of threatening to kill former President Barack Obama, breaking into a National Park Service historic site and threatening other people. A federal grand jury indictment filed Wednesday levies felony charges of burglary, damage to property of the U.S., terrorizing, malicious mischief, threatening to kill a former U.S. president and three counts of threatening interstate communications against Ian Patrick Stewart of Williston. The indictment said Stewart 'did knowingly and willfully threaten to kill and inflict bodily harm upon' Obama between April 20 and May 13. The document doesn't detail the alleged threat. Stewart also is accused of threatening to injure three Williston residents in May. The court papers say Stewart entered Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site on May 13 when it wasn't open to the public, caused a building to evacuate and threatened a Park Service employee and Williams County law enforcement. He was armed, according to the indictment. Several law enforcement agencies responded, and the historic site and the road to it were closed during the 'barricaded subject situation,' the Williams County Sheriff's Office previously said. Stewart is held at the Ward County Detention Center in Minot. He is scheduled to appear Monday in court. No attorney is listed for him in court records. The Associated Press left him a voicemail. Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is along the Missouri River at the Montana-North Dakota border. The site focuses on the history of the fur trade and the post that operated there for decades in the 19th century.

Shirley Madigan, wife of former House Speaker Mike Madigan, makes video plea to federal judge before his sentencing
The wife of former Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan is pleading with a federal judge before his sentencing next week. Shirley Madigan sent a video about her husband, who was convicted on corruption charges, that she hopes will be played in open court. In the video, she explained that she wouldn't know what to do without him around. "I really don't exist without him. I wish I could say that I do, but I don't know what I will do without Michael. I would probably have to find some place to live, and I probably would have to find care," she said. Mike Madigan was convicted of bribery conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud charges in February, but was acquitted of several other charges after a four-month trial accusing him of running a years-long criminal enterprise to enrich himself and his political allies. He was convicted on 10 counts and acquitted on seven others, while jurors were deadlocked on six other counts against him. The jury also was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on all six charges against his co-defendant, Michael McClain. The verdict was reached after more than 60 hours of deliberations over 11 days. Madigan and McClain faced a 23-count indictment in federal court in Chicago on charges of racketeering conspiracy, bribery, wire fraud, and attempted extortion. They were accused of conspiring with utility companies ComEd and AT&T to provide no-show jobs to Madigan's allies in exchange for the speaker's help on legislation. Prosecutors also accused Madigan of pressuring real estate developers to hire his private law firm, which specializes in property tax appeals. His sentencing is scheduled for June 13.

Suspected drunken driver in West Sacramento crashes into CHP vehicle
A suspected drunken driver in West Sacramento crashed into a California Highway Patrol vehicle early Saturday morning, the agency said. Just before 4 a.m., a driver entered a construction zone near eastbound Interstate 80 and Highway 50. A CHP vehicle was in the area for the ongoing construction, and the driver crashed into the patrol car. Photos shared by the CHP show the driver rear-ended the patrol vehicle. California Highway Patrol The officer had minor injuries, according to the CHP. "Slow down and stay alert in construction zones. We all deserve to get home safe," the CHP said.
