Jeremiah Smith fuels Ohio State-Michigan rivalry talk at Big Ten media days, calls it key
Earlier this month, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith promised that he would never lose to Michigan football again -- a bold statement considering he tallied just 35 yards in the fourth straight loss the Buckeyes had to the Wolverines. Additionally, while a wide receiver can go off any single game, that's generally not been the problem for OSU in The Game -- Michigan has just had stronger line play and have dominated in the trenches. Still, it was a welcome statement for Ohio State fans, even as they've downplayed the rivalry after winning the national championship. However, Smith refuses to downplay the rivalry, noting at Big Ten media days that beating the Wolverines is paramount in the state of Ohio. "I feel like they're crazy," Smith said. "Rivalry is a rivalry. I don't care what you're talking about. You can say, 'Oh, we lost, but we won that championship.' I feel like it's still a rivalry. We still should win that game. So to me, I take every game very seriously. I don't care what it is. I just want to win." Despite OSU fans and media changing their tune following the 13-10 loss once the Buckeyes started making waves in the expanded playoff, Smith says that the hate goes both ways, and it's not changing in Columbus. In his eyes, The Game is still The Game, no matter what happens after that. "I feel like they feel the same way about us," Smith said. "They don't like us. We don't like them. So I mean, it's a rivalry that's been going on for 100-plus years. So it's going to continue to be that way, even when I'm done playing here at Ohio State." Well, OK. These comments aren't terribly different than what Michigan players were saying while in the throes of a losing streak against the Buckeyes.

Orioles closer Félix Bautista placed on injured list with right shoulder discomfort
CLEVELAND — Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista, who is tied for sixth in the American League with 19 saves, was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right shoulder discomfort. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said the right-hander felt uncomfortable while stretching in the bullpen Wednesday during a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Bautista will undergo an MRI when the Orioles return home Friday. 'The (dugout) phone rang in the seventh inning last night and I thought, 'That is not good,'' Mansolino said. 'Then I heard it get slammed down and knew it wasn't good. 'Félix had started his process of getting loose and that's when it flared up.' Bautista did not pitch in the first three games of the series in Cleveland, last seeing action on Sunday at Tampa Bay when he earned his 19th save in 20 opportunities. He missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old Dominican has a 1-1 record and 2.60 ERA in 35 appearances, limiting opponents to a .134 batting average over 34 2/3 innings. Bautista has struck out 50 and walked 23. 'We just have to hope it's not too serious,' Mansolino said. The Orioles will use a closer-by-committee in the short term with righty setup men Seranthony Domínguez and Yennier Cano at the front of the line. 'We're going to have to bump up their roles,' Mansolino said. 'We'll figure it out.' Bautista will not enter free agency until 2028, but is eligible for arbitration following this season. The 6-foot-8, 285-pounder is in the final year of a two-year, $2 million contract. With the Orioles out of wild-card contention, they are expected to be active sellers before the July 31 trade deadline. ___ AP MLB:

Commanders news and observations: Incoming vets begin forming connections
During the Commanders' first practice, Dan Quinn focused on their raft of veteran additions: Eddie Goldman, Von Miller, Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil, Deatrich Wise Jr., etc. He was not so much evaluating their play as their demeanor. 'I wanted to see their connection with their teammates,' Quinn said. That's good insight into a significant theme of this training camp: How can the Commanders' new players blend with a tight-knit team?
