
Paris AirShow opens with 2,400 exhibitors amid Airbus-Boeing rivalry
The Paris AirShow opened on Monday at Le Bourget airfield, with more than 2,400 exhibitors from 48 countries set to display their latest innovations during the week-long showcase.
The event is the world's largest and most prestigious showcase for the aerospace and defence industry.
The ongoing rivalry between Europe's Airbus and US-made Boeing aircraft manufacturers is set to further intensify at the event as both companies announce significant new orders.
Boeing expects global demand for air travel to increase by more than 40% by 2030.
However, global tensions, trade tariffs and the Air India crash have cast a shadow over the event.
Last week's crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger jet minutes after takeoff put the spotlight back on the beleaguered US manufacturer. However, it was not immediately clear why the plane crashed.
Meanwhile, France has shut down the four leading Israeli companies' stands at the Paris show for apparently displaying offensive weapons, a decision Israel has condemned.
'The French are hiding behind supposedly political considerations to exclude Israeli offensive weapons from an international exhibition — weapons that compete with French industries,' Israel said in a statement on Monday.
Three other Israeli stands, which are not showing weapons, remain open.
A French appeals court had ruled Friday against activist groups who sought to block Israeli companies from participating in the show due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
Europe's fading Green parties met in Brussels to learn from their electoral setbacks and prepare for a comeback.
Speaking about their future, they said they wanted to focus on a "just transition" that responds to citizens' concerns, and to support a green investment plan at the European level.
"What we definitely need is to give concrete answers to people's everyday concerns about the cost of living," Vula Tsetsi, co-president of the European Green Party, told Euronews.
"We think it is very important not to pit the defence and security budget against the just transition, the cost of living and a more social Europe. But this requires investment and political courage", she added.
Meanwhile, at a time when "simplification" is the watchword of the European Commission, Ciarán Cuffe, co-president of the European Green Party, said he is "concerned" about the future of the Green Pact, the EU's roadmap for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
He warned against "throwing the baby out with the bathwater".
"If we simplify European legislation, we cannot lose sight of why these laws are there. So, for example, on corporate sustainability due diligence, it's about trying to stop modern sweatshops in Bangladesh and elsewhere," he said.
The Greens have suffered several electoral setbacks over the past year. While they were the fourth largest group in the European Parliament during the previous legislature (2019-2024), they lost 18 seats in June, dropping from 71 to 53 MEPs.
In the German federal elections in February, the Greens led by Robert Habeck obtained 11.61% of the vote, losing 33 seats in the Bundestag.
Meanwhile, the Greens have also seen a decline in Austria. After being part of the country's government with the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), they received 8.24% of the vote in the 2024 parliamentary elections and lost 10 seats in the National Council.
"When you're in government, you have to make compromises. So it's not easy to win over voters," said Tsetsi.
Cuffe blamed the defeats on the party's inability to grasp the issue of defence.

Study shows refillable cosmetics are attractive for consumers despite drawbacks
For World Refill Day, on Monday June 16, French beauty industry association FEBEA has published a study on the perception that French female cosmetics consumers have of refillable cosmetics products*. The goal was to better understand the expectations of consumers and the obstacles they are facing with regards to a type of format that is gaining traction, but whose potential is still limited by various drawbacks. The study, which surveyed 2,251 women and was carried out via focus groups, found there is a growing interest for refillable beauty and personal care products: 59% of respondents said they have bought at least one refill in the last 12 months. The average buyer profile that emerged is of a woman aged 19-44, with high income, living in a household of three or more people, and a very frequent buyer of cosmetics. For 70% of respondents, reducing the products' environmental impact is the main motivation for purchasing refills, followed by savings (for 64% of respondents) and convenience (39%). In terms of formats, consumers prefer small-size, capped refills that can be poured into a re-usable container (44% of respondents), ahead of refills that must be inserted into the original container (38%). Despite consumer interest, there are obstacles to a wider adoption of refillable products. The first (for 44% of respondents) is lack of in-store availability of refillable formats, followed by lack of knowledge about them (32%), the perceived complexity of the refilling act (19%), and health and safety concerns (14%). Also, refillable containers are still largely non-existent in product categories like make-up and toothpaste. To further encourage the adoption of refillable products by consumers, cosmetics brands must therefore offer a range of formats: According to the study, the ideal capacity of a refill is from two to four times the initial product's capacity. Travel sizes are also much appreciated. In addition, the financial savings expected by consumers are between 10% and 20%, irrespective of the refilling solution. The study underlined that consumers are also looking for clear information on environmental benefits. Finally, brands must make refills visible in-store, and place them at the heart of their product offering. They also need to raise awareness about this type of solution via ad hoc advertising. Global beauty giant L'Oréal has done exactly that by launching the #JoinTheRefillMovement campaign, a global multi-brand effort across multiple product categories and distribution channels aimed at encouraging consumers to embrace refillable products. The campaign features Lancôme, Armani Beauty, Yves Saint Laurent Beauty, Kiehl's, Mugler, Maison Margiela Fragrances, Prada Beauty, Valentino Beauty and L'Oréal Paris. The group's retail partners will support the campaign in order to boost the visibility of L'Oréal beauty products and lines available in refillable versions. The campaign also focuses on the benefits of refills both for the planet and for consumers' wallets. 'For example, opting to purchase a 100ml refillable bottle of La Vie est Belle L'Elixir [perfume] instead of two 50ml bottles saves 73% glass, 66% plastic and 61% cardboard,' said L'Oréal. *An initiative supported by Citeo as part of the EncoRE plus de réemploi (reuse even more) project, run by the Senseva agency.

Trump urges Iran to talk as G7 looks for common ground
Host Canada had designed the summit in the Rockies resort of Kananaskis to paper over differences within the bloc of major industrial democracies, as Trump returns to the global stage in his norm-shattering second term. But two days before the summit, Israel launched a surprise, massive military attack on Iran, which had been in negotiations with the Trump administration over the cleric-run state's contested nuclear program. Trump, who has praised Israel's strikes despite his stated preference for diplomacy, said he believed a negotiated settlement remained "achievable." "It's painful for both parties, but I'd say Iran is not winning this war, and they should talk, and they should talk immediately, before it's too late," Trump told reporters as he met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Israel has struck major nuclear and military sites and killed leading commanders and nuclear scientists in Iran, which has responded with its own volley of drones and missiles on Israel. Canada and European leaders have looked to draft a statement on the crisis, although it looks set to stop short of demanding a ceasefire. Leaders will discuss the statement Monday evening, a diplomat said. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that G7 leaders share concern about Iran's nuclear program but there is "absolutely a focus on how we de-escalate this and that will be a central focus as we go into the talks." Trump said he was optimistic about reaching a solution on trade as he met Carney, a staid former central banker who has appeared to win more respect from the US leader since succeeding the flashier Justin Trudeau in March. "I'm a tariff person," Trump told Carney. "It's simple, it's easy, it's precise, and it just goes very quickly." "I think Mark has a more complex idea, but also very good." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to join the G7 talks on Tuesday and to speak to Trump, who had initially tried to force him into a deal with Russia, which invaded Ukraine in 2022. Trump has since voiced frustration that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not accepted a US proposal for a ceasefire. The US president has previously mused about readmitting Russia to the G8, from which it was expelled in 2014 after invading and annexing Ukraine's region of Crimea, triggering a war which accelerated in 2022 with a full-scale Russian invasion. Former French junior minister sentenced for harassment
A French court on Monday, June 16, sentenced a former junior minister to a 10-month suspended prison sentence for workplace harassment. Nathalie Elimas, who was state secretary in the education ministry from 2020 to 2022, was also barred from holding elected office for three years and required to pay a fine of €5,000. The Paris criminal court said it was "convinced" that the bullying charges were justified "despite the defendant's denial." In December 2021, the center-right politician was investigated following reports of "dysfunction" in her work relationships. During the trial, three former colleagues of Elimas testified that the atmosphere in her office was "paranoid." The three women said they received contradictory orders, some of which concerned the junior minister's media coverage. "She wanted exposure, but she could cancel an interview 30 minutes before it started" fearing that it was a trap, said her former communications advisor. "I was blamed for all of it," she added. Elimas defended herself by arguing that people were after her, and that there was a political conspiracy to bring her down. "This procedure is born out of a machination, it is a loaded story rooted in feelings transformed into official truths," Elimas had said in court. Currently an advisor for the Île-de-France region, Elimas did not attend her sentencing.
