Bengaluru's 'good thief', who stole over Rs 22 lakh gold, says he did this to fund 20 school kids' education
In a revelation that seems lifted from a crime thriller, Bengaluru police were taken by surprise when a 35-year-old
serial housebreaker
claimed he resorted to theft not for personal enrichment, but to fund the education of underprivileged school and college students, reported TOI.
The accused, identified as
Shivu alias Shivarappan
from Begur, was recently arrested by the Byadarahalli police along with his accomplices Anil and Vivek. The trio is linked to a series of house break-ins across the city's west division, with Shivu alone facing charges in at least 11 cases, according to the report.

When police finally caught up with Shivu, he said: "I used the money to pay the fees of 20 poor students studying in schools and colleges," Shivu claimed. His 'Robin Hood-style' justification was met with disbelief, but not outright dismissal.
"We've heard all kinds of stories from arrested thieves, but this one was unusual. He said he was moved by the plight of families in his locality and decided to use the stolen money to pay fees. Shivu claims to have spent around Rs 14 lakh on students' education; we are verifying his claims," an investigating officer told TOI.
What did the police recover?
Police managed to recover around 260 grams of gold stolen by the trio, a portion of which was traced to sales made in Tamil Nadu. However, another Rs 14 lakh, allegedly used by Shivu to fund education and buy vehicles, remains untraced.

According to his statement, Shivu earned around Rs 22 lakh by selling the stolen gold. Apart from funding students, he claimed to have bought two autorickshaws — each costing Rs 4 lakh — for his two aides.
In another twist, Shivu told police he had once considered suicide due to the shame and burden of his
criminal lifestyle
. "But when I saw many students were struggling to pay fees, I found a new purpose. I decided to help them, even if it meant breaking the law," he allegedly said.
Police, however, are proceeding with caution. "We're not sure if he's telling the truth or trying to earn sympathy," said a senior officer. "Often, thieves come up with emotional narratives once they're caught. We will dig deeper to ascertain the facts. Regardless of his motive, a crime has been committed."

Dharwad: Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu has directed the HDMC and other local bodies in the district to initiate action to remove the stray cattle occupying the roads and other public places and send them to goshalas. Taking a serious note of the report, DC Divya who chaired a district level meeting of officials from the police, veterinary, revenue and HDMC said the stray cattle should be sent to goshalas. "If the cattle found occupying a road or public place belongs to an owner, he should penalised and punished as per the law. The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 stupulates imposing a fine of Rs 3 lakh and imprisonment upto five years" the DC said. The DC directed the officials to ensure that animal slaughter is done in places that have been permitted as per law and not at unauthorised places. Task force formed The DC also constituted task forces under the chairmanship of tahasildar's of respective taluks to oversee the proper implementation of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 during Bakrid which will be observed on June 7. Six Nepalese flyers held for using fake Gulf job permits
Mumbai: Six Nepali nationals allegedly attempting to travel to Qatar and the UAE using counterfeit foreign employment permits (FEP), supposedly issued by Nepal Embassy in New Delhi, were held at the Mumbai International Airport on Wednesday. Between May 26 and June 4, a total of 16 Nepali nationals were detained after paying Rs 2.5 lakh each to various agents in Nepal for overseas employment opportunities. Sahar police reported that in the two most recent cases filed on Wednesday, the agents facilitated legal travel arrangements for the six detained individuals to reach Mumbai Airport, unlike previous incidents. Immigration officials on Wednesday intercepted the accused who were head to the Gulf countries for roles such as drivers, packers, stewards and waiters, using fraudulent FEPs. The officials first stopped Arun Pandit, aged 47, who had travelled via Bagdogara Airport in West Bengal on June 3 to Mumbai, before attempting to board a Doha-bound flight on Wednesday. "However, the officials found Pandit's Nepali passport forged and the passport was issued in the name of Niraj Madai. Further inspection the officials found the FEP too was fake," said the Sahar police. Subsequently, authorities arrested five individuals who had travelled to Mumbai Airport through legal channels: Rohan Tamang (20), Roshan Thakur (25), Shamad Rain (27), Sanjay Mukhiya (21), and Madan Tharu (31). Despite their legal entry, their FEPs were discovered to be fraudulent. A police officer explained that following last week's detention of 10 Nepali citizens at Mumbai International airport, who had illegally entered India through Bihar and attempted travel to Doha and UAE using fake permits, Nepali agents altered their strategy to include legal transit. Nevertheless, this new approach proved unsuccessful. "Previously, agents would arrange for job seekers to cross Bihar borders by road, then fly from Patna to Mumbai before attempting travel to Doha or UAE. Investigations revealed that in all instances, the travellers had paid Rs2.5 lakhs to their agent."
