The Chenango County Historical Society will hold its inaugural 'Be My Neighbor' Day next week.
According to a news release, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon March 14. It will feature family-friendly activities and an appearance by Suzanne Bloom, an award-winning children's author and illustrator from Chenango County.
Inspired by WSKG Education and PBS Kids, 'Be My Neighbor' Day is based on the principles of Fred Rogers, known as 'Mister Rogers' from his long-running PBS television show. "It focuses on bringing people together to celebrate kindness and what it means to be a good neighbor," the release stated. Guest organizations include Chenango County 4-H Youth Development, Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, and The Place.
The event is part of Civic Learning Week, an initiative held annually "to highlight the importance of civic education in sustaining and strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States," the release stated. During CLW, community organizations host various activities to demonstrate the key role different groups play in ensuring high-quality civic education is accessible to every student across the nation.
'We are so excited to be hosting 'Be My Neighbor' Day during Civic Learning Week,' said Jessica Moquin, CCHS executive director. 'As a community-centered organization, encouraging kindness and collaboration are important.'
Civic Learning Week is hosted annually by iCivics, a nonprofit organization that encourages students to become active citizens. "By highlighting the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that provide the foundation for an informed and engaged populace, CLW seeks to further prioritize civic understanding across the nation," the release stated.

Chenango historians prepare for semiquincentennial

The Chenango County Historical Society and the Chenango County Historian's Office will collaborate on an event titled, 'An America250 Conversation.' The organizations are seeking input from the people of Chenango County on how local communities will participate in America250, a national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The community dialogue, the second in a multi-year series, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 29 at the SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus, at 20 Conkey Ave. The goals for the conversation are to present an overview of the official America250 themes, to seek public support for the commemoration and to encourage the participation of libraries, arts organizations, historical societies and other community organizations, the release stated. 'The commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution gives us the opportunity to re-examine the seminal events that took place between 1774 and 1783, and how those events have shaped our history and aspirations as a people,' said Henry Drexler, county historian. 'We're looking forward to this second collaborative conversation,' said Jessica Moquin, CCHS executive director. 'As local planning gets underway for marking this national milestone, we welcome everyone to join us. The commemoration is anticipated to last through 2033, and we expect a range of programs will be hosted throughout Chenango County.' Registration is encouraged by emailing info@ Visit for more details about this and other museum programs.

Concerned residents come together to protect immigrants

Feb. 6—"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,'" said Fred Rogers in his beloved television program for children, "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood." What do nurses, small business owners, HVAC technicians, local politicians, hairdressers, and members of the media have in common? In Danville, several of them are concerned about the plight of area immigrants, and they are hoping to become those helpers Mr. Rogers spoke about. kAm"x H2?E E@ DE2CE 3J D2J:?8 E92E x 92G6 366? 4@?46C?65 23@FE E96 :>>:8C2?ED[ 2?5 6DA64:2==J E96 49:=5C6?[ 7@C 2 =@?8 E:>6[ 6DA64:2==J H96?
