New play about impact of dementia on Black Britons can start ‘conversation'
Miss Myrtle's Garden is part of Lynette Linton's final season at the Bush Theatre in London, and the artistic director said the 'beautiful and heart-wrenching' production was an important opportunity to discuss the havoc dementia causes.
A report released in 2022 found that Black people had a 22% higher incidence of dementia recorded than white people in the UK.
The play will be directed by Linton's successor Taio Lawson and is written by Danny James King. 'Dementia, particularly in the Black community and in the Caribbean community, is a conversation that we need to talk about more,' Linton said. 'It's affecting so many people … let's talk about it now and let's give people the support they need.'
Linton's final season will also feature Superwoman Schema, which stars Golda Rosheuvel and Letitia Wright as two women struggling to come to terms with the death of their family's matriarch. It's about 'what that brings out for them and their relationship as they go on this journey to to work out what her death means,' Linton said.
Several of the plays in Linton's final season focus on older characters and those in middle age. As well as Superwoman Schema and Miss Myrtle's Garden, Sweetmeats looks at forbidden love between two middle-aged South Asian characters.
Linton recently directed Alterations at the National Theatre, which was a revival of a play by Michael Abbensetts, the ground-breaking British-Guyanese playwright who became established in the 1970s.
She said there wasn't a conscious effort to include stories about older people in the season, but she did feel more stories that revolve around middle-aged Black and Asian leads need to be created.
'What's so beautiful about Sweetmeats is it's a love story between these two elders: how often do we see a love story between characters of a certain age?
'I think that's happened because there's something about us honouring our elders at this point as well. I feel very passionate about that. I've always felt passionate about that, but Alterations has really opened that up for me.'
Other plays in Linton's final season including After Sunday, which is set in a cooking class that takes place in a prison psychiatric unit; Heart Wall, Kit Withington's play about the challenges of returning home as an adult, and House of Jenin, written and performed by Alaa Shehada.
Linton is taking a break after she finishes at the Bush in two weeks before returning to direct Superwoman Schema. She has been a vocal advocate for creating a more diverse theatre landscape in the UK and for 'disrupting' the established canon with new work and rediscovered pieces that go beyond the likes of Ibsen, Pinter and Miller.
She said: 'It was about really looking at the canon and making a decision to tell specifically British and Irish stories with a specific focus on Black and Asian voices, so that we could go: 'Look, we are here, and our stories are deserved to be in the West End.''
Her six-year run as artistic director alongside associate director Daniel Bailey who is also leaving, has seen more than 50 plays performed that were written by British and Irish playwrights, with a particular focus on writers of colour.
During the pair's tenure they won four consecutive Olivier awards for productions and earned West End runs for original work, including Red Pitch and Shifters.
They also founded the Bush Young Company during the Covid lockdown, and produced Lenny Henry's debut play, August in England.
Did Linton have any advice for new boss Lawson? 'Follow your instincts … and remember the people that are around you are the heartbeat of that building,' she said.

Brian Blessed blasts ‘ignorant pigs' who put trigger warnings on Shakespeare plays
ACTOR Brian Blessed has howled down trigger warnings on Shakespeare plays — and he didn't bother with poetic Bard-style language by dismissing them as 'b***s'. The thunderous-voiced thespian labelled theatre bosses 'ignorant pigs'. The Sun told of Hamlet audiences being warned of 'coercive behaviour' and 'grief, suicide and mental illness' at London's National Theatre. There have also been warnings about Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. Flash Gordon star Brian, 88, has appeared in Henry V, Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing. He told a sci-fi convention: 'It's bs. It's f***ing Shakespeare. 'He is the greatest writer on the planet. 'People see his plays the length and breadth of this country and they are full of amazing things. 'There are so many ignorant pigs around.' To hammer his point home, Blessed then quoted a famous line from The Tempest adding: 'Prospero said 'We are such stuff as dreams are made on and our little life is rounded with a sleep'.' It means our short lives are fleeting like dreams and therefore not real - just like the action people see in plays on a stage. Blessed made a name for himself after appearing in movies Flash Gordon, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves as well as on TV shows Z-Cars, Blackadder and I, Claudius. Jamie Foxx has rare night out with on–off girlfriend Alyce Huckstepp... months after they split
Jamie Foxx was seen enjoying a rare night out with his on-and-off girlfriend Alyce Huckstepp, as well as his teenage daughter Anelise, in Los Angeles on Saturday. The 57-year-old actor — who recently joined his children at the lavish Summer Gala in St. Tropez — flashed a cheerful smile as he headed to dinner with the group. The Django Unchained star was stylishly casual in a black-and-white patterned shirt, as well as ripped black trousers. He paired the look with a pair of white sneakers and added a bizarrely tall cream-colored domed hat with a wide brim. Jamie completed the look for the evening with flashy silver necklaces as well as fashionable shades. At one point, the Hollywood actor could be seen holding hands with Alyce, whom he reportedly split from earlier this year in January. At one point, the Hollywood actor could be seen holdings hands with Alyce - whom he reportedly split from earlier this year in January She sported a glittering silver bralette top from Dolce & Gabbana and layered a sheer black cropped shirt on top. Alyce completed her ensemble by donning a pair of fitted black pants with heels and carried a small purse in her left hand. Her locks were pulled away from her face and styled into a high ponytail for a finishing touch. Jamie's youngest daughter Anelise also accompanied her famous dad for the night out, and she was joined by a few of her close pals. The comedian shares the 16-year-old with ex Kristin Grannis, while he shares his oldest daughter Corinne, 31, with Connie Kline. Jamie has been publicly linked to Alyce since 2023, but in January it was reported that they had gone their separate ways. A source told People at the time that the pair had called it quits after dating for a year and a half. The breakup reportedly happened after Jamie came under fire for a comic song in his Netflix special What Had Happened Was in which he sang that he had been 'cured' of white women. While it is not known when the pair sparked up a romance, Alyce had notably attended the premiere of his film Day Shift in 2022 (seen above right) - one year before they went public with their relationship 'Sisters, I'm here to tell you, I've been cured,' the Ray star sang from behind a piano. 'I've been cured of everything, no more white girls. I'm serious, no more white girls. No more white girls. No more. No more white girls.' As audience members applauded and leapt out their seats, Jamie continued: 'I'm back on the Black side of town! 'No more white girls. No more potato salad and raisins. No more white girls. No more spray tan, no more big t***ies no a**, no more white girls.' Several viewers were outraged by the song, which they claimed was racist, though there's no indication that it represents Foxx's true feelings or that it was anything more than a comedy sketch. While it is not known when Foxx and Alyce sparked up a romance, she notably attended the premiere of his film Day Shift in 2022 — one year before they went public with their relationship. Jamie and Alyce were first seen together in August 2023 as they grabbed dinner at Nobu in Malibu. Later that same year, the pair whisked themselves away for a relaxing trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The on-and-off couple were spotted on various other occasions, such as in 2024, when they enjoyed a beach getaway together. And in January of this year, the pair reportedly went their separate ways. However a few months later in April, Jamie and Alyce were seen reuniting at Nobu in Malibu. After grabbing dinner, the pair were spotted standing outside of the celebrity hotspot as they waited at the valet. The actor showed something on his phone to the blonde beauty which prompted her to laugh, but the two ended up leaving in separate cars. While both Jamie and Alyce have yet to publicly comment on the status of their relationship, the comedian has been keeping busy. Late in July, the actor was accompanied by his daughters Corinne and Anelise at the Summer Gala event in St. Tropez, France. The star kept it casual in a white button-up and matching white linen suit. Jamie held a big smile on his face as he paused for a brief photo session on the red carpet with his children. The actor reflected on his health scare in April 2023 when he suffered a brain bleed and stroke while filming the Netflix movie Back In Action; seen in June in LA The comedian was seen speaking on stage during the star-studded festivities and at one point mingled with other stars such Christian Louboutin, Leonardo DiCaprio and his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti. One month earlier, Jamie became emotional at the 2025 BET Awards in June as he accepted the Ultimate Icon Award. The actor reflected on his health scare in April 2023 when he suffered a brain bleed and stroke while filming the Netflix movie Back In Action. 'I gotta be honest — when I saw the "in memoriam" [portion of the awards show], I was like, man, that could have been me,' the actor admitted to the audience. 'But I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance I'm not going turn down. I'm not going to turn down.' He also gave a special shout out to his sister Deidra as well as his eldest daughter Corinne. 'I cannot say enough about you. You've always taken the backseat to everything. But when you needed to drive it, you drove. And you made sure I was here. And I ain't going to turn down.' Jamie also shared a message to Anelise and gushed, 'My baby with the big hair. She hides under that hair because she's got something special.

The Rainmaker – Season 1 Episode 1 'Another Rainy Day' Recap & Review
Another Rainy Day Episode 1 of The Rainmaker starts with a man waking up to find that his house is on fire. He tries to call out to his mother, who has already died in the fire, and he manages to escape before it burns down completely. The episode then moves to introduce Rudy Baylor at a free legal clinic, along with other aspiring lawyers from his class. Rudy and his girlfriend, Sarah, offer free legal advice to people in need of help. Their latest client is a woman called Mrs Black, who discusses the death of her son, who was admitted to the North City Hospital. He initially had a minor flu and the hospital tried to settle the matter by offering her 50,000 USD for her son's life. Sarah tells Mrs Black that she and Rudy aren't able to help her because they're both going to start working with the law firm that North City Hospital had hired to resolve the case. Mrs Black needs the support of an actual experienced lawyer. That night, Rudy works his last shift as a bartender before leaving for work at Tinley Brit Corporate. Rudy's mother complains to him about her husband, which infuriates him. He confronts his stepfather, Hank, which leads to the two men having a fist fight. To put an end to the fighting, his mother asks Rudy to move out of the house. Rudy claims that he was looking for a place to move to anyway and leaves for work. Sarah saves a spot for Rudy, who is late on the first day. When Rudy shows, he is picked on by the firm's managing partner, Leo Drummond. Leo calls Rudy out for being late, and the two end up discussing how victims of domestic violence are not treated equally by the law. Leo challenges Rudy, which leads him to bring up examples of multiple cases regarding domestic abuse of women. Rudy presents his arguments with statistics, but Leo wants Sarah to challenge him. Leo praises Sarah for her rebuttal, but Rudy stumps Leo by quoting one of his lines. After the meeting, Sarah learns about Rudy's fight with Hank and reminds him about learning to back away from unnecessary fights. Rudy is fired from the firm and goes back to working at the bar. He starts looking for more places to work, while his old boss recommends Rudy try working for Jocelyn 'Bruiser' Stone. There, Rudy meets the other lawyer working for Jocelyn, Deck Shifflet. With no other options, Rudy agrees to start working for Jocelyn for $5000 a month. Meanwhile, Sarah makes an impression on a high-priority client who asks her to be put on his account. Leo is impressed with Sarah and tries to figure out what kind of lawyer she will be. That night, Sarah helps Rudy move into his new apartment. Rudy doesn't want to move in with her, and some of that stems from how different his life is from Sarah's, who still lives off her parents' trust fund. The next morning, Deck shows Rudy the ropes as they try to secure a client for themselves. They go to the North City hospital to find potential clients who might need lawyers to help them. Meanwhile, Sarah tries to talk to Leo about Rudy, asking him to consider giving the guy another chance. Leo puts Sarah in her place, telling her that she has no business telling her what to do. On the other hand, Rudy manages to convince a patient from a hit-and-run case to hire him as their lawyer. One of Deck and Bruiser's competitors, Rodd, is also at North City Hospital looking for clients. He finds Melvin Pritcher, the man whose house was burned by the fire that killed his mother. Rodd convinces Melvin to sign him on as a lawyer. At the same time, Rudy decides that he cannot keep waiting for a case and decides to meet Mrs Black. Rudy tells Mrs Black that he is no longer working for Tinley Brit and she doesn't have to pay him unless she wins the trial. After some convincing, Rudy manages to get on the case. That night, Sarah learns that Rudy is working on Mrs Black's case and gets upset with him. She reveals that Leo had put her on the case and reminds him that they will be against each other in court. Sarah wants Rudy to drop the case, but he refuses to do so. The next morning, Mrs Black's dog finds something in her yard that makes her suspicious that she is being followed. Meanwhile, a woman and a man follow after Rudy and Deck. Rudy and Deck meet Rodd outside the courthouse and tell him that Melvin was the nurse at North City hospital on the night of Mrs Black's son's death. Rudy and Deck present the case to Jocelyn, who finds loopholes in the case. She points out that Mrs Black's son is actually an opioid addict, but Rudy claims that the opposition are willing to settle the case out of court, which means that there's something amiss. Jocelyn permits Rudy to go ahead with the investigation, but makes him promise to keep going until he gets to the truth. Melvin tries to break into an empty house, when a woman stops him. Melvin injects her with something, causing her to pass out, bringing the episode to a tenuous ending. The Episode Review The Rainmaker gets off to an interesting start, with a lot of similarities to shows like Suits or White Collar. The set-up is quite similar, but I love how the firm that Rudy starts working with is not some big conglomerate, but a small law firm. I cannot help but notice how Milo Callaghan, playing Rudy Baylor, looks like a mix of a young Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. Coincidentally, Matt Damon played Rudy Baylor in the 1997 film based on the John Grisham novel that this show is based on. This casting choice may have been intentional, but a treat to the eye nonetheless! The characters in this show certainly have depth, and with a familiar format of 1 episode releasing each week, we will have to wait to see how this one progresses. So far so good, though! Next Episode Expect A Full Season Write-Up When This Season Concludes!
