Exclusive: Actor Trisha says Thug Life with Kamal Haasan felt like 'safe space'
For actor Trisha Krishnan, 'Thug Life' was a reunion with some of her past and favourite collaborators. "I have known Simbu and Kamal sir for several years now, and it was quite easy for me. In my film career, Kamal sir has been a mentor to me. Simbu and I have done two films, and we have known each other for a long time. When I entered the film set, it felt like a safe space for me. I have built a comfort level with everyone, even with Mani sir," she explained. After the trailer of 'Thug Life' released, many were surprised to see Trisha and Kamal Haasan's intimate scenes and commented on the obvious 30-year age-gap between them. Working with someone repeatedly helps you form a bond or understand each other better. He now knows what and how to extract from me. I have the comfort with him. You are both in sync than you have before."'Thug Life' is an emotional gangster drama set for grand release on June 5.Trending Reel

Thug Life box office collection day 4: Kamal Haasan film ends 1st weekend with ₹35 crore, fails to surpass Indian 2
Thug Life box office collection day 4: Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles, ended its first weekend on a modest note. According to Sacnilk, the film collected ₹35.64 crore net in India in four days of its release. (Also Read: Thug Life worldwide box office collection day 3: Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film collects over ₹60 crore) Thug Life was released in theatres on Thursday and collected ₹15.5 crore net in India on its opening day. The film saw a massive dip on Friday, bringing in ₹7.15 crore. Collections perked up a little on Saturday, with a collection of ₹7.75 crore. On Sunday, the film brought in an estimated ₹5.24 crore net in India, taking its first weekend collection to ₹35.64 crore. While these collections are decent, expectations for Mani and Kamal's first film together in years were higher. With the film collections not perking up during the weekend, it seems less likely that the weekdays will bring about any change. Kamal's previous film, Indian 2 by Shankar, performed better than Thug Life and made ₹62.15 crore in four days, and ₹59.15 crore by its first weekend. Mani's Ponniyin Selvan I and II had also brought in ₹120.15 crore and ₹103.75 crore respectively at that time. Thug Life sees Kamal play Shaktivel, aka Shakti and Silambarasan, his adopted son, Amar. Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf also star in the film. Thug Life is Kamal and Mani's first film after their 1987 hit Nayakan, which is considered a cult classic. The film's ban in Karnataka after the language row also could've affected the film's collections, given that the state is a good market for Tamil films, apart from Andhra Pradesh-Telangana.

Is Nayakan and Thug Life similar? Decoding 5 parallels between Mani Ratnam's films starring Kamal Haasan
Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam have remained friends for more than three decades now, rather than just colleagues. Interestingly, they have collaborated on only two projects together till now, first with Nayakan and then with Thug Life. Their second project happened only after a gap of almost 38 years. However, despite the differences, audiences have felt that both films have maintained some common traits and share more than one shred of similarity. Well, then, check out these five parallels that have been drawn between Nayakan and Thug Life. Running theme of gangster thrillers One of the most evident similarities between Nayakan and Thug Life is their theme and backdrop of gangster action thrillers. The former revolved around the evolution of an underworld kingpin as he rose from being a mere slum dweller to a respected crime lord in the hustling city of Bombay. In Thug Life, a similar trait can be found, as it narrates the story of the feared mafia from Delhi and his journey, where he seeks vengeance against those related to his own. Similarity of the names of the protagonists It appears that Mani Ratnam has attempted to maintain a string of continuity between the two films by awarding similar names to the titular characters, both being played by Kamal Haasan. For Nayakan, the Tamil actor adopted the name Sakthivel Naicker, who is also known by the nickname Velu to many. When it comes to Thug Life, Kamal Haasan 's character sticks to the name of Sakthivel and becomes Rangaraaya Sakthivel. Critique of complex family relations Another common trait between the two Tamil films is an underlying commentary on complex family relations and unresolved issues in both movies. In Nayakan, the protagonist grows up witnessing his father's abandonment and is left feeling betrayed after his father's death. On the other hand, audiences witness a game of revenge between Sakthivel and his foster son Amaran in Thug Life, after the latter planned to kill him and hoard his position in the underworld. Tassel between good and evil Both Mani Ratnam films leave audiences on a difficult path, as they must judge what is genuinely good and what is inherently bad. The titular characters in the two movies, played by Kamal Haasan, appear overwhelmingly corrupted due to their connections to the gangster world. However, underlying their stiff exterior is a soft core of a traumatic past, which is often overlooked. As a result, it is quite difficult to categorise them as good or bad, or whether the character is just morally flawed. References to past trauma References to the protagonist's past trauma are another recurrent theme in both films. Their transformation from being an ordinary man to the king of the mafia world is no easy task. While one faces derangement and detachment from any paternal figure, the other suffers from backstabbing hypocrisy, which shakes his belief in anything good.

Thug Life worldwide box office collection day 3: Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film collects over ₹60 crore
Thug Life worldwide box office collection day 3: Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's first film in 38 years, Thug Life, is not performing as expected. After lukewarm reviews and a sudden dip in collections on Friday, the film steadied itself on Saturday. As per Sacnilk, it has collected ₹62.50 crore worldwide in three days. (Also Read: Thug Life box office collection day 3: Kamal Haasan film hold steady, collects ₹28 crore) The trade website reports that Thug Life collected ₹30.40 crore net and ₹35.40 crore gross in India in three days. It made ₹26.70 crore overseas, taking its total collection to ₹62.50 crore. The film opened to ₹15.5 crore in India and dipped on Saturday with a ₹7.15 crore collection. It showed slight improvement on Saturday and made ₹7.75 crore. The film is sustaining mostly on its Tamil version's collections, with the Hindi and Telugu versions of the film making less than ₹1 crore per day. Karnataka has been a good market for both Mani and Kamal's films after Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh-Telangana. Despite criticism, Shankar's Kamal-starrer Indian 2 collected ₹8.55 crore out of its ₹81.9 crore in Karnataka. Ponniyin Selvan I and II collected ₹28.12 crore and ₹22.55 crore each out of ₹313.36 crore and ₹214.63 crore, respectively. Thug Life has been banned in the state following a language row in which Kamal refused to apologise. The film seems to be faring well overseas, too, and it remains to be seen how it does on Sunday. Thug Life stars Kamal, Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal and Rohit Saraf. It is Mani and Kamal's first reunion after their 1987 hit Nayakan, which is considered a cult classic. The film tells the story of a feared mafia kingpin who seeks revenge after betrayal.
