Siegrist makes claim about Celtic board & 'internal' issues

The Swiss stopper revealed that he was getting a different message from Brendan Rodgers than the board.
Brought in by Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2022, after Rodgers came in the door a year later, he told Siegrist that he wasn't in his plans.
As a result, the 33-year-old wanted to depart.
"I had an offer from a team that I was willing to go to," said Siegrist on The Bondi Podcast. "They said yes initially, then they changed their mind. Then I was stuck with the transfer window shutting.
"I felt like I needed to play to get my confidence back.
"In January... I had another team going for a league in another country, a top division, playing European football. I was on holiday, actually. Everything was agreed. Then I found out that Celtic hadn't responded to that team in four weeks.
"I did everything, pushed everything. I spoke to Stevie [Woods]. He said, 'In January, you can go'.
"I spoke to the new team, spoke to everyone. It was a done deal. I was ready to pack up.
"Some people on the Celtic board just didn't respond to any of the enquiries from the other team."
When asked why the board went silent over a move, Siegrist simply replied, "Good question."
"There was never a problem between me and Brendan Rodgers," the goalkeeper continued. "It was always very respectful. But there were things going on internally.
"The message I got from the manager wasn't the same that I got from the board.
"That was very frustrating because all I wanted to do was play. I was denied that opportunity twice. It felt like a lost year.
"It wasn't right the way it was handled.
"It just felt like a kick in the teeth."
Siegrist now plays his football for Genoa. He is on loan at the Serie A club from FC Rapid of Romania.

Bob MacInytre suffers BMW Championship agony as Scottie Scheffler overhauls Oban hero's four point deficit

It wasn't to be for the Oban star who had held a four shot lead over Scheffler going into the final day of play in Maryland Bob MacIntyre was left reeling after Scottie Scheffler overturned a four-shot lead to reign supreme at the BMW Championship. ‌ The Scottish hero had gone into the final day in Maryland with a healthy advantage after a stellar display on Saturday but was simply no watch for the American in the end, who pipped him to the PGA title by two shots. ‌ World number one and three-time major champion Scheffler capped off a fine comeback with an exquisite chip-in on the 17th hole to edge him towards victory at the Caves Valley Golf Club. ‌ The New Jersey star's glory in 2025 is showing no signs of slowing down, adding the BMW title to the PGA Championship and Open Championship crowns lifted by Scheffler earlier this year. It turned out to be a disappointing final day for MacIntyre who bogeyed his first two holes and wasn't able to register a birdie until the third-last whole. The 2024 Scottish Open winner shot 73 in total, with Scheffler finishing on a 15-under-par total after a final score of 67. Maverick McNealy finished third on 11 under. Elswwhe Shane Lowry comfortably qualified for the PGA Tour 's season-ending Tour Championship for only the second time in his career while Rory McIlroy bounced back five birdies from the ninth hole for a level-par round of a three under total score of 70. Speaking after his triumph, Scheffler said: "I think my consistency has a lot to do with the intensity I bring to each round. ‌ " I try not to take days or shots off. "When it gets to this time of the year it can be a little bit tiring, today was a grind." Steaua Bucharest in derby day collapse ahead of Aberdeen clash as boss goes against madcap owner's Dons prediction

The Bucharest giants were left reeling after dropping two points against bitter rivals Rapid Steaua Bucharest boss Elias Charalambou insists Aberdeen will be no push overs in their Europa League play-off showdown - despite some suggestions from the Romanian camp that progress to the group stages will be something of a formality. ‌ FCSB warmed up for their trip to Pittodrie for the first leg on Thursday by squandering a two goal lead in their derby day draw with Rapid Bucharest. ‌ The away team had led 2-0 going into the final seven minutes only to drop two points by conceding twice to leave them in 13th place in the league standings with just one victory from their first six matches. ‌ But Cypriot coach Charalambou reckons his team are heading in the right direction and is anticipating a stiff test against Jimmy Thelin 's men in four days time. After the draw with Rapid, he said: "Our evolution was very good, but unfortunately we did not take all the points. I think we are slowly starting to get closer to our very good form. "We will have a very difficult match in the Europa League play-off. We have to recover and we will try to qualify for the League group." That sentiment was shared by star midfielder Florin Tanase, who also felt Rapid were extremely fortunate to claim a share of the spoils. He added: "Overall, they didn't deserve any points tonight. There was no fatigue. I think we played a good game. "Rapid didn't create any chances and they are a team with valuable players. I think we played a good match. We have to look to the future. I feel good and we will definitely play better and better matches. "We are forced to give everything against Aberdeen. "Aberdeen is not an easy team, but we have demonstrated many times that we can fight with teams in Europe. This match gives us confidence that we will grow." It comes after madcap FCSB owner and controversial former politician Gigi Becali admitted he is already counting the cash inflow that qualifying for the group stage will bring to his club. ‌ He said: "I know we will get at least £12 million when we qualify. "Unlike Cluj and Universitatea Craiova, we will be playing in the group stages of the Europa League. "I am not interested in Aberdeen or how they play - I have no time or interest in watching football from other European countries."

Moyes confident hungry Jack Grealish can bring excitement back to Everton

David Moyes has said Jack Grealish's determination to relaunch his career and prove people wrong in the process convinced him that the Manchester City outcast could bring excitement back to Everton. Grealish is 'looking fabulous, in great shape' and in contention to feature in Everton's Premier League opener at Leeds on Monday, according to Moyes, despite not playing in pre‑season having fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola. The 29-year-old started only seven league games for City last season and was left out of their 27-man squad for the Club World Cup this summer. He was also omitted from the England squad last summer for the European Championship after losing his place following City's 2023 treble-winning campaign. Moyes 'tried to get as much information as I could' on Grealish's problems at City, although he has not spoken to Guardiola about what occurred, but says the player's hunger to recapture the form that made him Britain's first £100m footballer banished any doubts over the loan. 'The knowledge that he thinks he's got a little bit to prove and to stand up,' the Everton manager said on what convinced him to sign the England player. 'I've had to do that myself. I've had to come back from being knocked down. Sometimes you have to have that resilience to bounce back, to fight back and to show everybody. I just sense Jack is carrying that with him now. I hope it shows through this season because, if it does, then we'll get a lot of good things from Jack.' Grealish was Everton's sixth summer signing – a seventh soon followed in the goalkeeper Tom King – but the squad remains light in several departments with various transfer targets missed. Moyes believes the legacy of recent relegation scraps and no European football has deterred some players but, with Grealish on board, Everton have stated their ambitions clearly. 'It is a big thing for me,' Moyes said. 'The club have done brilliantly to build a new stadium. I think now there has to be a building of a football club back inside it, to get it back to where it was and more importantly to get the team back to where it was. We are a long way off at the moment. I don't think we can do that in this window and make the team what we want it to be, but we are going to need people along the journey to make it more exciting and make people want to come and play. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion 'Whether that is through high-profile players or our league position or how we are playing, we are needing some of them to give us a lift now. There's been quite a few players who I've been disappointed have not chosen to come to Everton this summer and I think that's because, if you look at the last four or five years, we've not been in great shape. Hopefully they are beginning to see a new stadium, great results in the second half of last season, and they start to believe Everton is a good home for them.'
