Students receiving eagerly anticipated A-level results

Students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are receiving grades to help them decide whether to progress to university, an apprenticeship or work.
Last year, 27.8% of UK A-level entries were awarded an A or A* grade – the highest proportion outside the pandemic-affected years of 2020-22.
The Covid-19 pandemic led to an increase in top A-level grades in 2020 and 2021, with results based on teacher assessments instead of exams.
In 2019 – the last year that summer exams were taken before the Covid-19 pandemic – 25.4% of UK A-level entries were awarded top grades.
Leaders in the education sector have warned of the possible continuation of 'stark' divides in A-level results between different regions across the country because of the legacy of the pandemic and socio-economic factors.
The Education Secretary has said she will not 'stand by and accept the entrenched inequalities' that blight the life chances of many young people.
The Government's plans for turning around the attainment gap between white working class children and their peers is due to be set out in the autumn.
Students who are receiving their A-level and level 3 vocational and technical qualification results were in Year 8 when schools closed because of the pandemic.
This cohort of school and college leavers received their GCSE results in 2023 – the first year that grading was returned to pre-pandemic levels in England.
In Wales and Northern Ireland, exam regulators returned to pre-pandemic grading in 2024 – a year later than in England.
Pepe Di'Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), said A-level grades have returned to a 'consistent standard' since the pandemic and he would expect that to 'broadly continue' this year.
But Mr Di'Iasio told the PA news agency: 'Unfortunately, we also expect to see the continuation of persistent inequities in terms of performance gaps between different regions and students.
'This is a product of longstanding socio-economic factors which require a much more concerted society-wide effort to fix.'
He added: 'The legacy of Covid is part of this picture, with the disruption caused by the pandemic likely to have had the greatest impact on students from disadvantaged homes.
'Schools and colleges have put huge efforts into supporting these young people, but without sufficient Government action to help them, and in the face of an extremely difficult situation caused by funding and teacher shortages.
'The current Government has made the right noises but unfortunately this has so far not been matched by the improved investment in education which is so clearly required.'
Lee Elliot Major, professor of social mobility at the University of Exeter, said: 'We must brace ourselves for stark divides in A-level results this year — not only between state and private schools, but also between London and other regions such as the South West and North East.
'In recent years, the gap in top grades — As and A*s, the passports to the most selective universities — has grown alarmingly, undermining efforts to widen access.
'These inequities are being driven by a toxic mix of the cost-of-living crisis, rising poverty, persistent school absence, and the long shadow of Covid.
'Unless we act, we risk locking in generational divides that will shape life chances for decades, with all our social mobility indicators now flashing red.'
For many students, receiving their exam results on Thursday will also bring confirmation of university places.
Last week, Jo Saxton, head of Ucas, suggested a record number of 18-year-olds could be successful in securing their first-choice university on results day.
British universities are keen to recruit UK students because there is more 'uncertainty' around international students, she suggested.
On the day before A-level results day, a PA sample of 129 of the UK's largest higher education providers showed there were 22,518 courses with vacancies for undergraduate students living in England on the Ucas clearing site – which matches applicants to university places yet to be filled.
As of Wednesday afternoon, 18 of the 24 Russell Group universities, which represent some of the most selective UK institutions, had vacancies on courses for English residents – a total of 3,492 courses between them.
Clearing is available to students who do not meet the conditions of their offer on A-level results day, as well as those who did not receive any offers.
But prospective students who have changed their mind about what or where they wish to study, and also those who have applied outside the normal application window, can also use clearing.
In England, T-level results will also be received by students on Thursday.
Speaking on A-level results day, Ms Phillipson said: 'Every young person should have the opportunity to achieve and thrive.
'This Government won't stand by and accept the entrenched inequalities that continue to blight the life chances of too many young people, especially those from white working class backgrounds who have long been overlooked.
'We're already taking decisive action and making encouraging progress.'
She added: 'Today is a time for celebration as young people up and down the country collect their exam results.
'Whether A-levels, T-levels or technical and vocational qualifications, I wish everyone the very best of luck, and offer my heartfelt thanks to the fantastic teachers, staff and parents who've supported them to this milestone.'
Kevin Latham, research and policy manager at the Sutton Trust social mobility charity, told PA: 'Year 8 is a crucial time in educational and social development, and the effects of school closures during lockdown are ongoing.'
He said he would be 'surprised' if there is significant improvement in attainment gaps between the South East and North East of England.
'By the time students get to their A-levels, years of disadvantage are already baked in for pupils in areas of high deprivation,' Mr Latham said.
Sir Ian Bauckham, chief regulator at Ofqual, England's exams regulator, said: 'Ahead of students receiving their results we would like to recognise the valuable contributions made by their teachers who have put so much work into getting students to this important day.
'Exam results can change people's lives, and underpinning these defining moments is a well-regulated system of widely recognised and valued assessments and qualifications.'
Scotland has a different qualification system and students received their results on Tuesday last week.
Figures released by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) showed that 78.4% of those sitting National 5 exams passed with grades A to C – up from 77.2% last year.
For Highers, 75.9% passed with the top bands, up from 74.9% last year, and for Advanced Highers 76.7% of students achieved A to C grades, up from 75.3% last year.

First Minister John Swinney has spoken of how he is 'very proud' of Scotland's baby box scheme as it marked its eight anniversary. ‌ The initiative launched in August 2017 and since then more than 350,000 of the boxes containing essential items for a newborn have been handed out to expectant parents. ‌ With Scotland the only part of the UK where such boxes are given out, the Government said they saved families £400. ‌ Designed so infants can sleep in them, the boxes contain a mattress and blanket, as well as items for the first months of a child's life including clothing, a changing mat, play mat and books – as well as a voucher for a reusable nappy and liners. Mr Swinney said the Baby Box scheme 'strongly signals our determination that every child, regardless of their circumstances, should get the best start in life'. He spoke out ahead delivering one of the boxes to parents-to-be Mairi Morrison and her partner George Waddington, at the Western Isles Hospital in Lewis on Friday. Speaking about the scheme, Mr Swinney said: 'The programme is supporting families right across the length and breadth of Scotland, including here in the Western Isles where 1,281 boxes have been delivered to date.' He added: 'It is clear that this universal offer, a UK first, has been hugely successful with 89% of all parents with newborn babies registering for a box – benefiting around 41,000 families annually. ‌ 'My number one priority as First Minister is to end child poverty in Scotland – and I am very proud of the impact that the baby box is making to support families across the country.' Yesterday we reported that Nicola Sturgeon claimed baby boxes in Scotland would help reduce the poverty-related attainment gap. ‌ Sturgeon used a keynote speech in 2015 to promise her government would "close the attainment gap completely" over the next decade - a policy ministers formally adopted a year later when John Swinney was serving as education secretary. Sturgeon was pressed on the issue when appearing at the Edinburgh International Book Festival yesterday to promote her new memoir, Frankly. ‌ Asked by host Kirsty Wark why the attainment gap was still there, Sturgeon said: "This is possibly one of my biggest regrets, and it comes from not delivering it, but also the time I made the promise. I was probably not appreciating, as I quickly came to do, the factors that would influence that. "That was not just about issues around the curriculum in schools, but what is the driving cause of the poverty related attainment gap? It's poverty, it's the conditions children grow up in outside of school. "Some of the things that I am proudest of, are the Scottish Child Payment, the doubling of early years education, the baby box - these are things that are lifting children out of poverty and I believe, in time, will make a difference to the attainment gap." So Nicola Sturgeon achieved nothing? What a load of nonsense

I have not read the memoir - time has not permitted. And the noisy reaction from some quarters has been of no real interest – it has not triggered any impulse to delve deeper to find out what the fuss is about. All of this sound and fury is to be expected, and much of it has come from people with political views very different to those of the former first minister or from those at odds with Ms Sturgeon on particular issues. The publication of the memoir has, however, also led to assessments of what Ms Sturgeon achieved during her long time as first minister, from November 2014 to March 2023. And this, from a personal perspective, is a more interesting aspect. It has seemed that many people have been almost falling over themselves to flag their withering opinions on this front, with a black-and-white view that 'nothing' or close to nothing was achieved. From a business and economic perspective, and from a societal point of view, that seems like a most unfair conclusion. Thankfully, some assessments have been more positive, but these seem to have been drowned out somewhat. Ms Sturgeon's relationship with the business community, certainly from the perspective of the latter, seemed to deteriorate significantly amid the coronavirus pandemic. What is often forgotten is the period before that, when you could have taken the view that business was surprisingly positive about Ms Sturgeon. After all, many company leaders were and are vehemently opposed to independence, not infrequently because of personal political or ideological views but also for some because of fears about the effects of constitutional change. Touching briefly on the pandemic, you might have thought Ms Sturgeon's approach would have been appreciated by more business leaders. There was a steadiness about it, in contrast to the toing and froing and all the drama from former prime minister Boris Johnson. Read more We should also remember Ms Sturgeon argued eloquently and convincingly during this period against the hard Brexit delivered by Mr Johnson, which continues to cost businesses the length and breadth of the UK so dearly and to hammer the country's beleaguered economy. And there were surely few if any moments, for all the hue and cry from some in the business community, when it could have been argued that Ms Sturgeon and the Scottish Government were being far too cautious with the pandemic restrictions and lockdowns. That said, a narrative nevertheless developed during that period that the Scottish Government was not on the side of business. Leaving the politicking and emotion fuelled by Ms Sturgeon's memoir to one side and taking a detached look at her time as first minister, without having read the book, it is not at all difficult to immediately identify other major positives. Ms Sturgeon was first minister when the Scottish child payment was introduced in 2021. This continues to be an extremely important source of support for low-income families in Scotland, now amounting to a weekly payment of £27.15 for every child under 16 years of age. And it is all the more crucial given the savage welfare cuts at a UK level that began when the Tories came to power in 2010. Given the Scottish Government's very limited powers in this area, the Scottish child payment is a huge deal. And it is simple arithmetic that giving money to people who have to spend all or the vast bulk of their income to live feeds through directly to aggregate demand, thereby boosting the economy. Former Conservative prime minister David Cameron and erstwhile chancellor George Osborne highlighted the importance of welfare spending to growth when they cut it savagely and hammered the UK economy. Read more Claiming we were 'all in this together', they implemented a corporation tax cuts bonanza, which failed miserably to boost investment and the economy as they claimed it would, as company bosses hung on to the windfall or distributed it to shareholders while the population at large was made to pay the price for the global financial crisis. Ms Sturgeon also, during her time as first minister, stuck steadfastly in straitened financial times and amid grim budget squeezes coming from Westminster with the SNP's commitment to free university tuition for students ordinarily resident in Scotland and doing their first degree. This is so important in ensuring the talent pool is not diminished by restricting access to higher education to those able to pay for it or willing to take on huge amounts of debt. If we are serious about having a highly skilled workforce, free university tuition is essential. It was lamentable to see Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer go back on a previous pledge on free university tuition in England. Under 'social justice', one of Sir Keir's 10 pledges in 2020 when he was standing for Labour leader, the politician promised to 'support the abolition of tuition fees and invest in lifelong learning'. However, asked about this pledge in spring 2023 on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Sir Keir replied: 'We are likely to move on from that commitment, because we do find ourselves in a different financial situation." The trebling of tuition fees in England under the Cameron administration looked at the time like a politically driven move to narrow access to higher education, and it continues to do so. Of course, Ms Sturgeon could probably have done some things better on the business and economic front. It was unnecessary for her to pass an opinion that the proposed giant Cambo oil field off Shetland should not get the green light. The decision rested in any case with the UK Government. And the North Sea is still such an important provider of employment, directly and through the supply chain, and still makes a huge contribution to the Scottish economy. Having said that, there were far more positives than negatives from a business and economic perspective when Ms Sturgeon was first minister, even if the pluses seem very under-appreciated now. Perhaps the best overall assessment of Ms Sturgeon's time in charge is to be gleaned from examining the foreign direct investment (FDI) numbers over the period in which she was first minister. This, after all, gives a cold, objective view of the merits of Scotland as a place to do business in a global context. Companies look at many factors, including workforce skills and the stability of government and policymaking. In 2022, the last full year in which Ms Sturgeon was first minister, a then record 126 FDI projects were secured by Scotland, figures from accountancy firm EY revealed. This was up from 122 in 2021, and the 3.3% increase in the number of projects secured by Scotland in 2022 contrasted with a 6.4% decline in the UK as a whole that year. EY's Ally Scott said at the time: 'Scotland put in another powerful performance on FDI in 2022, securing record inward investment projects and UK market share.' The accountancy firm, publishing figures for 2024 this summer, highlighted the fact Scotland has been second only to London in terms of the number of FDI projects won in every year since 2015. That is mightily impressive. And those who would claim Ms Sturgeon achieved nothing, or was somehow detrimental to business and the economy, should reflect on this, once the emotion subsides a bit.

Child sexual exploitation victims 'not in scope' of violence against women and girls strategy

Victims of child sexual exploitation are "not explicitly within the scope" of the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy being drafted by the government, Sky News can reveal. Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (CSEA) is a form of child abuse, described by police as a "critical threat" to women and girls. It includes crimes such as grooming, and can involve both physical contact, such as rape, or non-physical - like forcing children to look at sexual images. Sky News has been shown an internal Home Office document presented to various stakeholders in the sector. It's titled "Scope of the Strategy... Our draft definition of VAWG", and says that while it recognises "links" between VAWG and child sexual exploitation, it is not "explicitly within the scope of the strategy". "VAWG is Violence Against Women and Girls. If you take child sexual abuse out of it, where are the girls?" Poppy Eyre told Sky News. Poppy was sexually abused and raped by her grandfather when she was four. It wasn't until she was 11, after a PHSE lesson on abuse at school, that she understood the enormity of what had happened. "I remember very vividly when the police came round and told me… this is what we're charging him with," said Poppy. "We're charging him with sexual abuse and rape. And I remember being like, I had no idea that's what it was, but I know that's really bad." Poppy's grandfather was convicted and died in prison. She questions how authorities would police crime if child sexual abuse is excluded from an umbrella strategy to tackle violence against women and girls. "Are they holding child sexual abuse at the same level of importance as they are with violence against women? You'd hope so, but potentially not, because it doesn't need to be in the figures", she said. The government has pledged to halve VAWG within a decade, by 2035. "If the government are measuring themselves against halving violence against women and girls - if they're not looking at the scale of child sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation within that - that will mean we are failing many young victims of abuse," said Andrea Simon, director of campaign group End Violence Against Women. The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse, which is funded by the Home Office, estimates 500,000 children in England and Wales are sexually abused every year. 'Danger' of having separate plan Rape Crisis told Sky News that "for any strategy to be effective" it "must include all forms of gender-based violence against all women and girls", suggesting there is a "danger" in having a separate plan for child sexual abuse. Its chief executive, Ciara Bergman, said it could create a "problematic and potentially very unhelpful" distinction between victims of domestic abuse, expected to be covered by the strategy, and child sexual abuse. "Some perpetrators of domestic abuse also sexually abuse their children," she told Sky News. The government insists the strategy will include action to tackle child sexual abuse, but says it also plans to create a distinctive programme to address its specific crimes. "Sexual abuse is violence against a child," said Poppy's mother, Miranda Eyre, who now works as a counsellor specialising in trauma. "It is violence against girls… and you can't separate it out," she said. "I'm speechless to be honest… it does make me quite angry." A Home Office spokesperson told Sky News it is "working tirelessly to tackle the scourges of violence against women and girls and child sexual abuse". "These issues are complex and run deep within the fabric of society," they added.
