B Saroja Devi: Veteran actor who was an iconic face in cinema landscape of the country
Often remembered as the 'first female superstar' of Kannada films, Saroja Devi began her acting journey at the age of 17 with Mahakavi Kalidasa in 1955. Over the next seven decades, she appeared in more than 200 films and left a mark on audiences across the country.
Born on January 7, 1938 in Bengaluru, she was awarded Padma Shri in 1967 and Padma Bhushan in 1992. She also received the Kalaimamani award, the Dr Rajkumar Lifetime Achievement Award, and the NTR National Award in both 2001 and 2009. In 2008, the Government of India honoured her with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 60th Independence Day celebrations.
Her Kannada roles in Kittur Chennamma, Babruvahana, Mallammana Pavada, Kasturi Nivasa, Naagakannike and Bettada Hoovu earned her widespread acclaim. She was popularly called Abhinaya Saraswathi, or Goddess of Acting, for her expressive style.
A memorable line she delivered in Kittur Chennamma — 'Nimage yaake kodabeku naavu kappa' — translated as 'Why should we pay you a tribute' became a fixture in school stage performances across Karnataka, with many students dressing as Rani Chennamma, a popular freedom fighter, to recite it.
Her onscreen pairing with MG Ramachandran (MGR) in Tamil cinema became a sensation. The two worked together in 26 consecutive hits between 1958 and 1966, including Nadodi Mannan, Thirudathe, Thaai Sollai Thattadhe, Enga Veetu Pillai and Anbe Vaa. After these successes, Saroja Devi was seen as a top star in the Tamil industry and, for a time, considered too expensive for Kannada filmmakers.
Her work in Telugu films began with Panduranga Mahatyam in 1957. She went on to star in films such as Jagadeka Veeruni Katha, Seetharama Kalyana, Shakuntala, Pramilaanjaneyam, Rahasyam alongside ANR, and Daagudu Moothalu with NT Rama Rao. Many of these were based on mythology or folklore.
In Hindi, she acted in films like Paigham, Preet Na Jaane Reet, Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Opera House and Sasural. Her ability to move between languages and film cultures set her apart, and she later returned to Kannada cinema to take on supporting and character roles. Her last screen appearance was in the 2019 film Natasaarvabhowma.
Condoling her death, chief minister Siddaramaiah said in a post on X: 'The news of the passing of veteran Kannada actress B Saroja Devi is deeply saddening. Known as Abhinaya Saraswathi Goddess of Acting she acted in nearly 200 films across Kannada Tamil Telugu and Hindi cinema. The very mention of Saroja Devi brings to mind her graceful performances in films like Kittur Chennamma, Babruvahana and Anna Thangi. Through films of refined taste she entertained cinephiles for several decades. Her passing marks a tremendous loss for Indian cinema. I pray that her soul rests in peace. My heartfelt condolences to her grieving family and fans.'
Actor Khushbu Sundar wrote on X, 'An era gold golden cinema comes to an end. Saroja Devi amma was the greatest of all times. No other female actor in south has ever enjoyed the name and fame as her. Such a lovable adorable soul she was. Had a great rapport with her. My trip to Bengaluru was incomplete without meeting her. And whenever in Chennai, she would call. Will miss her immensely. Rest in peace Amma. Om Shanti.'

Prithviraj Sukumaran on language row: We forget that the ethos of this nation is unity in diversity, not uniformity
Prithviraj Sukumaran might have started his career down South in Malayalam films, but over the course of his career, the actor has worked across languages, be it in the South or in Hindi. Amid the release of his recent Hindi film Sarzameen, he acknowledges how language can be used as a tool for unity through cinema. Prithviraj Sukumaran(Photo: Yogen Shah) However, in recent times, language-based violence has been rising, especially in the state of Maharashtra. Ask him about how the language is being used as a divisive tool and Prithviraj Sukumaran says, 'Maybe I'm just old-fashioned because I come from a time and generation where you grew up with none of this even being a topic for discussion.' The actor adds, 'I am a Sainik school product, I spent most of my schooling years in Sainik school and even at the schooling stage, I had friends from the North and from different states. We all had different languages being spoken amongst us. So, it was just part of who we are as a country. I just think that in the heat of all these discussions and conversations, we forget that the ethos of this great nation is unity in diversity, not uniformity, in spite of diversity.' Check out the full video interview here: Prithviraj is amongst the actors from down South who have managed to strike a balance between Hindi and the South languages. However, the success rate of even South superstars in Hindi has been a bit skewed. Mention that to him and he says, 'I can't speak for others, but I am not looking for a transition. I am just looking for the next good script that comes my way. I've always said that if the next good script that comes my way is from the Assamese industry, I'll do it. If tomorrow, a Bhojpuri maker comes and narrates something really interesting, I'd love to do it. I have come here today from the sets of a Telugu film, I'm promoting a Hindi film now and tomorrow, I'm on my way to shoot a Malayalam film.' But why do even big South names fail to connect as well with the Hindi audience? 'I don't think anybody has an equation that is a fool proof methodology to understand what will work and what will not work. All of us make every single film hoping that it resonates with the audience and it works, because ultimately we make films for that. We will go wrong, hopefully we will learn and we will try again. We might fail again but that's the only way to go about it. Having done this job for this long, I, for one, know that nothing is permanent. If tomorrow, Sarzameen is a blockbuster, that does not mean that okay, now I have arrived in Hindi. It will all depend on the next script I choose to do,' he responds.

Hari Hara Veera Mallu Box Office Collection Day 5: Pawan Kalyan film inches close to ₹100 crore
Pawan Kalyan's historical action drama, Hari Hara Veera Mallu - Part 1 Sword vs Spirit, ended its debut weekend on a solid high, drawing large crowds from day one. However, the film's box office collections saw a drop as it stepped into the weekdays. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned ₹ 2.25 crore on its fifth day. On Monday, July 28, 2025, the Telugu-language film recorded an overall occupancy rate of 15.68%. So far, the Pawan Kalyan-led movie has amassed ₹ 77.50 crore in total earnings. Globally, the film surpassed the ₹ 100 crore milestone within just four days of release. According to the latest figures, the film has now collected ₹ 102.20 crore worldwide. The film is the first installment of a two-part saga. Initially helmed by director Krish, the project later came under the direction of Jyothi Krisna. It is produced by AM Rathnam. Alongside Pawan Kalyan, the cast includes Bobby Deol, Nidhhi Agerwal, and Sathyaraj in key roles. Set against the backdrop of the 17th-century Mughal Empire, the story chronicles the adventures of legendary rebel Veera Mallu as he sets out to retrieve the Koh-i-Noor diamond from Emperor Aurangzeb in a bid to save a city under siege. The film faced backlash from audiences and critics alike for its underwhelming visual effects and narrative flaws. Following heavy criticism, the makers quietly re-released an updated version of the film with altered scenes. A significant portion of the climax was also edited out in this revised cut.
