‘New realities on the ground': Russia claims advance in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk amid stalled peace talks

Russia said on Sunday its forces had advanced to the edge of the east-central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk amid a public row between Moscow and Kyiv over peace negotiations and the return of thousands of bodies of soldiers who fell in the war. read more

Russia announced Sunday that its forces have made a breakthrough into Ukraine's eastern industrial Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time in the three-year conflict as peace talks remain stalled and fighting continues to ravage the region.
Amid talk of peace, the war is stepping up with Russian forces grabbing more territory in Ukraine and Kyiv unfurling high-profile drone and sabotage attacks on Russia's nuclear-capable bomber fleet and, according to Moscow, on railways.

Russia, which controls a little under one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, has taken more than 190 square km (73 square miles) of the Sumy region of eastern Ukraine in less than a month, according to pro-Ukrainian open-source maps.
Now, according to the Russian defence ministry, units of the 90th Tank Division of the Central Grouping of Russian forces have reached the western frontier of Ukraine's Donetsk region and are attacking the adjacent Dnipropetrovsk region.
Moscow has consistently rejected international calls, including those from Ukraine, European leaders, and former US President Donald Trump, for a comprehensive ceasefire. Instead, it has insisted on recognition of its claimed territories as a precondition for any peace agreement. In talks held in Istanbul on June 2, Russia reiterated demands that Ukraine formally accept the annexation of the five regions—an outcome Kyiv has firmly rejected.
Earlier negotiations last month saw Ukraine warn that Russia threatened to escalate its military operations should Kyiv refuse to surrender.
The conflict has exacted a devastating toll: tens of thousands killed, millions displaced, and widespread destruction across eastern Ukraine due to persistent air strikes and ground combat.
Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the country's security council, underscored the significance of the new advance, warning Kyiv on social media that failure to accept the 'realities' of war in talks would lead to 'new realities on the ground.'
Tens of thousands have been killed in Russia's three-year war, millions forced to flee their homes and cities and villages across eastern Ukraine devastated by relentless air attacks and ground combat.

Russia's ex-president Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the national security council, said the fresh advance was a warning to Kyiv.
'Those who do not want to recognise the realities of the war at negotiations, will receive new realities on the ground,' he said on social media.

Gaza aid boat to press on 'until last minute' as Israel orders military to block the vessel: activists

CAIRO: A humanitarian boat bound for Gaza, with 12 activists on board -- including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg -- will continue its journey "until the last minute", campaigners said on Sunday, after Israel ordered its military to block the vessel. "We'll stay mobilised until the last minute -- until Israel cuts the internet and networks," European parliament member Rima Hassan told AFP from the boat -- named Madleen. The Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, left Sicily last week with a cargo of relief supplies to "break Israel's blockade on Gaza". "There are twelve of us civilians on board. We are not armed. There is only humanitarian aid," Hassan said. Earlier in the day, Israel's defence minister Israel Katz ordered the military to block the boat from reaching the Palestinian territory. "I say clearly: turn back because you will not reach Gaza," Katz said in a statement from his office. The coalition responded in a statement on X saying it expected "interception and an attack from Israel at any moment" and calling for the governments of those on board to protect them.

Influencing interlocutors: On Operation Sindoor, India's delegations

The seven Indian delegations of mostly Members of Parliament and some former diplomats, tasked by the government to carry diplomatic messages after Operation Sindoor, have completed their travels. The 59 members visited 32 countries to convey the country's position on the outrage felt over the Pahalgam terror attack and its links to Pakistan, the restrained and precise nature of Indian strikes on Pakistan's terrorist infrastructure, and the 'new normal' the government has adopted for terrorist strikes. The message was meant not just for foreign governments but also for lawmakers, the foreign media and the general public, especially in countries where New Delhi has felt it has not found the expected support. Many of the countries visited are members of the UN Security Council (UNSC), and include those which are elected non-permanent members or will join next year. This is important as India faced a diplomatic setback when Pakistan, an elected UNSC member for 2025-26, was able to amend the UNSC statement to omit references to The Resistance Front (TRF) that had claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam attack. That Pakistan managed to be chosen Chair of the Taliban Sanctions committee and Vice-Chair of the UN Counter-terrorism Committee will make India's task of holding the terrorists responsible for the attack accountable through UN designations and at the Financial Action Task Force more difficult. Another area of focus was the membership of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation that has been particularly critical of India. Finally, the focus on the U.S. was pointed, where the delegation visited New York and Washington. This may have stemmed from the appearance that ties with Washington are strained over President Donald Trump's persistent claim that he had mediated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, using trade ties as a leverage to avert a 'nuclear conflict'. It remains to be seen just how successful these tours of political diplomacy have been, given criticism in India that more time was spent speaking to the Indian diaspora, and giving interviews to the accompanying Indian media rather than in influencing interlocutors abroad. The delegations also had to contend with a copy-cat move from Pakistan to counter the Indian narrative. However, the overarching message of the delegations, comprising representatives from a number of Indian States, faiths and political parties, is a powerful one — of Indian unity and consensus on the issue of national security. At a time when the Modi government is under criticism internationally for 'democratic decline' and increasing majoritarianism, New Delhi chose its messengers wisely, with a view to projecting abroad a positive and pluralistic image of a country that was resolute against terrorism.

Israel orders military to stop Gaza-bound 'antisemitic' Greta Thunberg

Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has directed the military to stop a charity boat heading toward Gaza. "To the antisemitic Greta and her Hamas-propaganda-spouting friends, I say clearly: You'd better turn back, because you will not reach Gaza," he joined the mission to protest to challenge Israel's "illegal siege and escalating war crimes" in Gaza. She has also denied past accusations of CITES SECURITY REASONS FOR GAZA BLOCKADEIsrael's conflict with Hamas began in October 2023 after a surprise Hamas attack killed over 1,200 people. According to Israeli reports, Hamas also took 251 hostages back to the enclave. Since then, Israeli forces have been attacking Gaza, where health officials say over 54,000 Palestinians have infrastructure in the region has been destroyed, and the United Nations has warned that Gaza's 2.3 million people is facing the risk of Minister Katz said the naval blockade is critical to stop weapons from reaching Hamas."The State of Israel will not allow anyone to break the naval blockade on Gaza, whose primary purpose is to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hamas," he to FFC, Madleen is carrying only a small amount of aid, including rice and baby formula. A press officer for the group, said that the yacht was about 160 nautical miles (roughly 296 km) from Gaza. "We are preparing for the possibility of interception," she added as per news agency with Thunberg and others, the crew includes French European Parliament member Rima media reports claimed that if the boat reaches Israeli waters, the military will escort it to the Israeli port of Ashdod.
