Coming off back-to-back series losses to the Rangers and Royals, the Cardinals will play host Shohei Ohtani and to the reigning World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend at Busch Stadium.

Despite dropping their last two series, the Cardinals are still six games above .500 entering play this weekend, with a record of 34-28. Unfortunately for St. Louis, the Cubs are still red-hot and now have a five game lead in the NL Central.
The Dodgers are coming off a four-game series split against the Mets. With a record of 38-25, they currently hold a two-game lead over the Padres for first place in the NL West.

1. Can Cardinals pitchers right the ship?
After the Cardinals' pitching was lights-out for the majority of the month of May, it's been a rough last week or so. In their last six games, the Cardinals are allowing an average of nearly seven runs per game. Their starters haven't been able to go deep into games, and the bullpen has looked shaky to say the least.

2. Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers stars
It's no secret that this Dodgers' lineup is absolutely loaded. Alongside Shohei Ohtani are former MVP winners Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, as well as Will Smith, who will likely be the NL's starting catcher in this year's All-Star Game. In 12 career games vs St. Louis, Ohtani is hitting .275 with two homers.
3. Michael McGreevy returns?
With the starting pitching seemingly on the ropes and the Cardinals playing 13 games in 13 days, manager Oli Marmol has hinted at going back to a six-man rotation. With Sunday's starter still yet to be announced, it seems likely McGreevy will be making his return to the big leagues this weekend. McGreevy has shined is his brief time at the major league level, posting a 1.57 ERA over 28.2 IP.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are getting healthier. But even two steps forward comes with one step back on the injury front. On Saturday, the club activated relievers Michael Kopech and Kirby Yates off the injured list, but also made their 20th different IL placement of the season in putting Tony Gonsolin on the shelf with right elbow discomfort. Advertisement Gonsolin has made seven starts this season in his return from Tommy John surgery, surrendering nine home runs and posting a 5.00 ERA in 36 innings. While the stuff has rebounded from his pre-surgery form (his average fastball velocity is up to 93.5 mph from 92.4 mph in 2023), his command has not, leading to issues with surrendering first-inning runs (seven in seven starts). Now, he'll land on the IL for the second time this season; he missed the start of the season after tweaking his back in the weight room during the final week of spring training. Of the Dodgers' 20 IL placements this season, 17 have involved pitchers. While some of those placements have been due to preexisting issues the Dodgers had baked into their offseason aggression in acquiring arms, the number remains staggering. The Dodgers' current injured list runs 14 names long, including three of the team's big-name pitching acquisitions the last two winters in Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Roki Sasaki. Kopech has missed all of 2025 thus far due to a right shoulder impingement that cropped up this spring training. He'd already been delayed in the spring because of forearm-related discomfort that he pitched through in last year's postseason. Yates strained his hamstring last month, but had already taken on a heavy workload this season with 22 appearances in the team's first 46 games. Now they'll reinforce a Dodgers bullpen that has thrown a league-high 272 innings this season and continued its shuffling of bodies by designating Chris Stratton for assignment for the second time in less than a month. This wave of injuries comes in the wake of a similar spate a year ago, when the Dodgers entered the postseason with just three healthy starters. While the club still won the World Series, the club's brass called for an internal audit of some of their injury issues. Advertisement 'I've been around for, I hate to say it now, 23, 24 years,' Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior said of the Dodgers' injury issues back in April. 'Unfortunately, injuries (are) still in the game at a prevalent (level), at a high level. I wish it wasn't, but it's an unfortunate side of the game.' 'I said this a lot, and I think anyone who doesn't say it is not being honest: There's a lot we don't know about injury stuff, and I think it's important not to pretend like we have all the answers,' Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said last month. An All-Star in 2022 when he won 16 games, Gonsolin missed all of 2024 and the first 30 games this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He returned to make seven starts, going 3-2 with 5.00 ERA. In his last outing Wednesday against the Mets, he gave up two earned runs on three hits in five innings of a 6-1 loss. Advertisement Gonsolin, 30, is 37-13 with a 3.33 ERA in six seasons with the Dodgers. His move to the IL further scrambles an already complicated situation for manager Dave Roberts, who is missing 16 pitchers because of injury, including three key starters in Blake Snell, Roki Sasaki and Gonsolin. It also leaves the Dodgers' pitching rotation uncertain for this week's key series with second-place San Diego.
