Laxman Utekar's journey from selling eggs and washing cars to directing the Rs 800 crore blockbuster 'Chhaava' is truly inspiring. Starting as a studio sweeper, he persevered through odd jobs and eventually became a successful filmmaker with hits like 'Luka Chuppi' and 'Mimi'.
Although 'Chhaava' received mixed feedback from critics, it went on to smash box office records by earning over Rs 800 crore at the worldwide box office. Director
Laxman Utekar
, who has directed only six films so far, struck gold with this blockbuster. However, his journey to success began humbly—he once earned a mere Rs 2 working during
Ganesh Chaturthi
celebrations and used to wash cars before he could afford to drive one.
In a recent interview, Utekar opened up about his inspiring rise from modest beginnings to major success.
Early Life and Struggles in Mumbai
Laxman
's journey began in a small village in Maharashtra's Raigad district before moving to Mumbai with his uncle at a young age. On the Mama's Couch podcast, he recounted how he took on every possible job to survive in the bustling city. Reflecting on his entry into the film industry, Utekar said, 'I came into the industry by chance, and I had no backing.
I was maybe 4 when my uncle brought me to Mumbai. I started selling boiled eggs outside a bar when I was 6 years old, and later I opened a vadapao stand in Shivaji Park, but that got seized by BMC.
' He also shared a unique way he earned money during the Ganapati festival, explaining how many wealthy people preferred not to leave their cars to immerse their idols. To help, Utekar and a friend offered to carry and immerse the idols for a fee of Rs 5, which they split.

He humorously noted that he would even chase after cars of affluent devotees to offer this service.
First Break in the Film Industry
He revealed that his initial break into the film industry came after he applied to a job advertisement in the newspaper and was hired as a sweeper at a studio. Reflecting on those early days, he said, 'I started working as a sweeper for them, and I didn't really understand what work they were doing.
I would clean the floors and the washrooms, after which I would get tea for the people working in the sound and editing studio.
I looked at their work and realised that whatever work they were doing was very interesting, and I wouldn't leave for several days sometimes; I was never bored.' He added, 'Since that day, I have never left the industry or looked back.' Utekar also spoke about his dedication to every task, mentioning that he washed cars with complete sincerity and was even praised by his boss for his thorough toilet cleaning.
To make ends meet, he took on various odd jobs such as selling popcorn and newspapers.
Persistence and Opportunity
Utekar shared that upon learning about Sahara's plan to establish a studio in the city, he made it a point to visit the location daily, patiently waiting by the gate. After three months of this routine, a man finally stopped his car and asked why he was lingering there. 'I was waiting for someone to get of their car and ask me this question,' Utekar recalled. When he requested to begin work the following day, the man surprised him by saying, 'Can you start today?'
Career Growth and Directorial Success
Laxman launched his career assisting acclaimed cinematographer
Binod Pradhan
, working on notable films like 'Dear Zindagi', 'Hindi Medium', and '102 Not Out'. He made his directorial debut with the Marathi film 'Taapal' in 2014 and has since directed successful Bollywood movies including 'Luka Chuppi', 'Mimi', and 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke'.

'Saiyaara' Box Office collection day 14: Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's romantic film earns Rs 6.5 crore on second Thursday; crosses Rs 280 crore mark

Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda 's romantic film 'Saiyaara' continues its strong run at the box office, even as it begins to face serious competition from new releases. On its 14th day in cinemas, the film added another Rs 6.50 crore to its domestic collection, bringing its total to an impressive Rs 280.50 crore as per early estimated by Sacnilk. A dip in numbers, but still going strong Thursday, 31 July 2025, saw the film earn Rs 6.50 crore, which is lower than its earlier daily collections. But despite the drop, 'Saiyaara' is holding up well considering the rising competition at the box office. The Mohit Suri directed film had an overall Hindi occupancy of 11.27% on Thursday, 31 July 2025. Morning shows registered an occupancy of 9.46%, afternoon shows climbed to 14.11%, followed by 9.90% in the evening and 11.60% during night shows. Facing heat from fresh releases The drop in 'Saiyaara's' collection on Day 14 was expected with the arrival of Vijay Deverakonda 's action-packed film 'Kingdom', which opened strong with Rs 15.40 crore on its first day (as per early estimates by Sacnilk). More competition is on the way, as 'Son of Sardaar 2' starring Ajay Devgn and the much-awaited romantic drama 'Dhadak 2' have released on 1 August. These new entries may pull audience attention and screens away from 'Saiyaara'. Day-wise box office report Week 1: Day 1 (Friday): Rs 21.5 crore Day 2 (Saturday): Rs 26 crore Day 3 (Sunday): Rs 35.75 crore Day 4 (Monday): Rs 24 crore Day 5 (Tuesday): Rs 25 crore Day 6 (Wednesday): Rs 21.5 crore Day 7 (Thursday): Rs 19 crore Total for Week 1: Rs 172.75 crore Week 2: Day 8 (Friday): Rs 18 crore Day 9 (Saturday): Rs 26.5 crore Day 10 (Sunday): Rs 30 crore Day 11 (Monday): Rs 9.25 crore Day 12 (Tuesday): Rs 10 crore Day 13 (Wednesday): Rs 7 crore Day 14 (Thursday): Rs 6.5 crore Total collection till say 14: Rs 280.50 crore The film had already recorded its lowest single-day collection on Day 13 (Rs 7 crore), and Thursday's Rs 6.5 crore further continues that downtrend. Can it still cross the Rs 300 crore milestone ? Even with its recent slowdown, there's hope that 'Saiyaara' might still touch the Rs 300 crore mark in the coming days. If weekend numbers rise again, the film could reach this massive milestone, which would be an incredible achievement for a film that began with modest expectations.

In this context, ET spoke with film marketing experts, young adults, and a psychologist to decode Saiyaara's success and whether it could impact future filmmaking and marketing strategies. The intensity of Saiyaara's marketing campaign was much higher after its release than pre-release and it focused more on showcasing audiences' reactions (from emotional to exaggerated) than on their opinions, noted Harikrishnan Pillai, CEO and cofounder of digital marketing agency TheSmallBigIdea. 'One must understand that the film's frenzy was 'captured' in non-metro areas and 'displayed' in metro areas,' he said. According to marketing experts, Saiyaara's makers hired small influencers in tier II-III cities to create videos that focused on audience reactions. As these videos became popular, many users (not hired by makers) joined the trend by creating their own short videos or reels. This added to the film's popularity and triggered a favourable algorithm on social media, experts said. Besides this, the makers piqued audience's interest in the film by not exposing its lead pair. 'The makers did not allow Saiyaara's lead pair to socialise and over-familiarise with audiences,' said Nidhi Bubna Sadhwani, head of marketing and digital at Red Chillies Entertainment. 'They held back on any promotional stuff. So, I think, there was an intrigue about the lead pair in terms of what they could do. This was exciting for audiences.'The film's music and trailer also played a critical role in creating favourable buzz, especially among young adults, experts marketing experts also believe the release time was a paramount factor in lifting Saiyaara's box-office fortunes.'You feel amazing about a familiar thing if it is given to you after a long time,' Pillai of TheSmallBigIdea said. 'There has been a romantic musical film drought period. Saiyaara's release quenched this hunger.'The film's themes also largely resonate with young adults, experts said. 'It is a cleverly made film. It seems that the makers have considered often-discussed topics on social media,' said Tejas Nirbhavane, a clinical psychologist. 'Scenes containing subjects such as nepotism, mental health, deserving people not getting opportunities, traumatic past, and commitment issues in relationships are shot as reels to appeal to young adults who have a short attention span,' he said.
