Hamilton feeling 'useless' after Hungarian GP qualifying flop
"I'm useless," said the British driver.
"Absolutely useless. The team has no problem. You've seen the car on pole so they probably need to change driver."
But he was backed to bounce back by four-time champion Max Verstappen who himself ranted about his Red Bull car and team after struggling to line up eighth on the grid.
"Looking at the whole weekend, I think we're happy to be in Q3 because I've been more outside the top 10 than in it –- so, yeah, it's been difficult this whole weekend," said the Dutch driver.
"No grip, front and rear, and it was the same in qualifying so, for me, it was not really a shock. I just drove to what I already feel the whole weekend."
The 27-year-old Dutchman added that Red Bull –- who had left a towel in his cockpit during a pitstop on Friday which led him to throw it out of the car, 24 hours after he had declared he was staying for 2026 -– did not yet understand the problems with the car.
"No, clearly not," he said. "I mean, otherwise, of course, we would have changed it already, but somehow, this weekend, nothing seems to work."
'Nothing works'
Last year, Verstappen said he had been quick enough to challenge for pole, but this season, "from lap one, it just felt off -- and we threw the car around a lot and nothing really gave a direction.
"Now, it's just nothing works. You know, it's like just going around in circles and nothing gives you any kind of idea of what to do."
Looking ahead to Sunday's race, he said: "There may be a few cars in front of me that I can maybe battle with a little bit and, of course, Lewis is still a bit further down the road which, I think, he shouldn't be there right? So, he will come through a bit."
The two multiple champions, who battled so intensely in 2021 when Verstappen claimed his first title after a controversial victory in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, appear to have found a rapprochement and mutual respect.
But Hamilton's heart-on-sleeve vulnerability as he seeks his first Ferrari podium after 13 races this year may soon become a sad ending story if he cannot sort out his qualifying woes.
As the record-holder of nine poles and a record eight wins at the Hungaroring, he has to produce a rousing reminder of his best racing days on Sunday, as Verstappen expects.

Schick extends Bayer Leverkusen contract until 2030
"Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract with Czechia international Patrik Schick. The striker has signed a contract to 30 June 2030," the club said in a statement on their website. Schick, 29, was an integral part of Leverkusen's unbeaten German domestic double-winning squad in the 2023/24 season. Alonso left to coach Real Madrid, and has been followed out the door by star playmaker Florian Wirtz, as well as Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah. "With the rebuild in the next cycle at Bayer 04 we see Patrik as a motor of development," said managing director sport Simon Rolfes. "He combines top-quality ability and an exceptional goal return with international experience and he will give the squad the necessary stability and structure." Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has replaced Alonso in the Leverkusen hot-seat as the club start down a new path. AFP Sport looks at three things we learned from Sunday's thriller at the Hungaroring: Ferrari turmoil masks upward momentum Two unhappy drivers and the speculation over Hamilton's form and future suggested Ferrari continued a downward spiral, but rivals and seasoned viewers said that simple conclusion is inaccurate. Leclerc grumbled the team wrecked the "one opportunity" to win this season, but he changed his view once he learned the cause of his car's mid-race loss of pace while leading. He had thought a front wing set-up change, during a pit-stop, was his undoing, but Ferrari said it was something else which cost him around two seconds a lap. Boss Fred Vasseur did not reveal the problem, but stressed that Leclerc's recent form, including pole in Hungary and a podium in Belgium, confirmed their upgraded car was competitive -- a view shared by rival team chief Andrea Stella of McLaren. He said he thought Ferrari will be a "contender for victories for the remainder of the season" while both Vasseur and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said Hamilton would shine again, after the 40-year-old declared he was "useless" and should be replaced. China's Baidu to deploy robotaxis on rideshare app Lyft
Last month, Baidu announced a similar agreement with Uber in Asia and the Middle East as it seeks to take pole position in the competitive autonomous driving field both at home and abroad. Lyft and Baidu said Monday that "in the following years" the fleet of Apollo Go driverless cars will be expanded to thousands of vehicles across Europe. They did not specify which other countries the cars would be deployed in, and it was not clear how long it might take to gain regulatory approval for the initial deployment. Driverless taxis are already on some roads with limited capacity in the United States and China, most notably in the central city of Wuhan, where a fleet of over 500 can be hailed by app in designated areas. Their reach is spreading, with Shanghai's financial district Pudong recently announcing a batch of permits for multiple companies to operate robotaxis. China's tech companies and automakers have poured billions of dollars into self-driving technology in recent years, with intelligent driving the new battleground in the country's cutthroat domestic car market. Baidu is not alone among Chinese companies in searching to expand its foothold abroad. Its rival WeRide is also active in the Gulf region, and in January announced it had been picked to lead a small pilot project in Switzerland. another Chinese company, said in May that it had signed a deal to launch its self-driving taxis on Uber in "a key market in the Middle East later this year". San Francisco-based Lyft in April said it had agreed to buy German taxi app Freenow, planting a flag in the European market.
