Austintown trustees vote to nix K-9 program

Yahoo06-05-2025

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -Austintown Township trustees voted Monday to end the police department's K-9 program.
Before trustees unanimously voted to retire two of its K-9s, Patrolman Jason Murzda asked for a delay.
'I would just respectfully ask that you guys maybe table the idea of dismantling our K-9. This way maybe Brad and I can sit down and talk further with you,' Murzda said.
Patrolman Murzda's K-9 is named Gunny. Patrolman Brad McFadden's K9 is Eras. Murzda told the trustees how he started the K-9 program when he worked in Struthers.
'I did it through donations. And since that time, they kept it running the way I had it going. They're now up to three dogs, and it's self-sustained,' Murzda said.
Chief Valorie Delmont supported the elimination of the K-9s — though she would later say it was a cut she did not want to make– but she's looking to save money.
'If we ended the program by early retirement, that would save approximately $10,000 this year and $20,000 next year,' Delmont said.
Austintown Trustee Bruce Shepas told Patrolmen Murzda and McFadden that the K-9 retirements take effect July 6, and the trustees could revote to keep the unit.
'I know that we talked about things, and you (Murzda) had some very good points about raising the money,' Shepas said. 'So, I challenge you and McFadden to make it happen. Find an alternative way of funding. Talk to your union, consider what we discussed. You got two months,' Shepas said.
Each Patrolman was given the opportunity to buy their dogs for $1.
Also at the meeting, trustees released a written opinion from the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office concerning the recent hiring of an assistant fiscal officer at $95,000 a year. The opinion was that the trustees must approve the hiring.
Since it was previously a union position, it may also have to be filled, and the new assistant can not do what was union work.

Attorney: Ex-wife of Rex Heuermann putting on a show in documentary

(NewsNation) — Asa Ellerup, the ex-wife of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann, has defended his innocence in a new documentary released on streaming platform Peacock. In 'The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets,' a three-part documentary, Ellerup is a central figure along with her and Heuermann's daughter, Victoria. Ellerup referred to Heuermann as 'her hero' despite the pair divorcing shortly after his arrest two years ago, and that she had 'fallen in love with him all over again.' Victoria Heuermann, on the other hand, has said she believes her father is 'most likely' the Gilgo Beach serial killer. Authorities believe they spotted ex-soldier Travis Decker, who is wanted in deaths of 3 daughters John Ray, the attorney for the family of victim Shannan Gilbert, said Ellerup's statements are all about posturing herself to show she had no involvement in the killings. 'This is all for show, and she's being paid a lot of money to put on a show,' Ray said. 'She and her daughter are doing very well at that. This is all fake and her statements are informed by that fakery.' Heuermann is accused of killing a total of seven women, whose bodies were among several found on Long Island, New York. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Heuermann is due back in court June 17 as a judge continues to weigh whether to allow key DNA evidence into the trial. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Authorities believe they spotted ex-soldier Travis Decker, who is wanted in deaths of 3 daughters

SEATTLE -- Authorities say they believe they spotted Travis Decker, an ex-soldier wanted in the deaths of his three daughters, near a remote alpine lake in Washington state, after receiving a tip from hikers who said they saw a lone person who appeared to be ill-prepared for the conditions. The Chelan County Sheriff's office said in a Facebook post Tuesday that tracking teams responded immediately, and a helicopter crew spotted a hiker near Colchuk Lake, in a popular Cascade Range backpacking area called The Enchantments. The off-trail hiker ran from sight as the helicopter passed, the sheriff's office said. Teams later found a trail, and K-9 teams tracked the person to the area of the Ingalls Creek Trailhead, south of Leavenworth. Authorities did not say when they spotted the subject, but late Monday night they issued an alert for residents in the Ingalls Creek and the Valleyhi community to lock homes and vehicles and to be on the lookout for Decker. Decker, 32, has been the target of a large manhunt ever since June 2, when a sheriff's deputy found his truck and the bodies of his three daughters — 9-year-old Paityn Decker, 8-year-old Evelyn Decker and 5-year-old Olivia Decker — at a campground outside Leavenworth. He had failed to return the girls to their mother's home in Wenatchee, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Seattle, following a scheduled visit three days earlier. Decker was an infantryman in the U.S. Army from March 2013 to July 2021 and deployed to Afghanistan for four months in 2014. He has training in navigation, survival and other skills, authorities said. He once spent more than two months living in the backwoods off the grid. Officials with an array of state and federal agencies have searched hundreds of square miles, much of it mountainous and remote, by land, water and air. The U.S. Marshals Service was offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to his capture. Last September, his ex-wife, Whitney Decker, wrote in a petition to modify their parenting plan that his mental health issues had worsened and that he had become increasingly unstable, often living out of his truck. She sought to restrict him from having overnight visits with their daughters until he found housing. An autopsy on Friday determined the cause of death to be suffocation, the sheriff's office said. The girls had been bound with zip ties and had plastic bags placed over their heads.
