Apple's latest sale is here: Shop deals on MacBook Air and Pro models at Amazon and Walmart

NBC News04-03-2025

I have considered the Apple MacBook Air one of the best deals in tech for a while now — I've had my own Air M1 for half a decade and it still runs smoothly. It's able to stream TV shows and music without a hitch. I can also do light photo editing and surf the web, all done by a laptop released in 2020. This isn't to say that there aren't better options out there, but if you only want to spend $629 on a new laptop within the Apple ecosystem you know you'll be in good hands with the M1 model.
This latest Apple sale also has deals on more updated models including the MacBook Air M2 ($799) and M3 ($899). You can also pick up the much more powerful MacBook Pro models with decent discounts. If you were on the fence about jumping into the Apple laptop line, this is a good time to grab a MacBook on sale.
The best Apple MacBook deals
Apple MacBook Air M2
If you travel or work remotely, this is one of the best laptops for the price. It's compact and lightweight. It also gets up to 18 hours of battery life — more than enough to go without a charge for a couple of days, in my experience. The M2 is currently 20% off, a great discount for a laptop that can easily work for years. It has 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a bright liquid retina display.
The M1 MacBook Air was released in 2020, but still delivers great performance in a compact size. NBC Select editorial projects manager Rebecca Rodriguez has used this model for years to tackle emails, spreadsheets, task management and streaming. I've also used this MacBook Air as my main laptop for five years. I'm able to stream shows and edit documents with very little issue. It's lightweight and portable and gets up to 18 hours of battery life, according to the brand. While it might not move as fast and have as many ports as other MacBooks, it is more than enough for most people's needs, especially at such a low price.
Apple MacBook Pro M4
'The M4 is an excellent all-round laptop that I would recommend to any creative professional. I can open dozens (read: way too many) tabs, hop on video calls and edit large video sequences in programs like Adobe Premiere Pro without the computer slowing down or getting too hot to handle,' says Rabinowitz. The screen is bright with vibrant colors and the highest resolution of any laptop on this list. It is slightly heavier and larger than the MacBook Air models, but you get better performance overall.
Apple MacBook Air M3
NBC Select staff have used different MacBook Air laptops for years. This M3 model is a good fit for anyone, outside of creative professionals and gamers. It has a high-resolution screen and a speedy processor. 'I can have tons of tabs open, tackle video calls and browse spreadsheets without slowing down,' says NBC Select reporter Harry Rabinowitz. This M3 version has a faster processor than the previous version and has 16GB of memory by default for even more speed.
Why trust NBC Select?
I am an editor at NBC Select who writes and edits stories on various topics including tech, fitness, home and more. I have covered major shopping holidays and other events for over five years. I've also tested and tried tech products for over five years including headphones, speakers and computers.

Millions of iPhone users issued urgent App Store warning

Millions of iPhone users and Android users with Apps downloaded from the App Store or Google Store have been urged to ensure they are making security checks. Lee Elliott, chief product officer at Compare and Recycle, said: "Before installing an app from the App Store or Google Play, always ensure it is a verified app and pay attention to its reviews." Users should ensure apps are updated regularly and remember to install any security patches when prompted, too, Lee said. Mr Elliott said: "If you suspect your device has been infected, the first port of call is to turn off your mobile data or Wi-Fi, and uninstall any suspicious apps you can identify. "You could also perform a factory reset. "On Android phones you can run a built-in scan to search for malware and resolve the issue, but due to the OS architecture out of the box, iPhones are well protected and are not generally susceptible to security breaches. "If you're experiencing any strange pop-ups as an Apple user try clearing your browsing history and cache first, and it'll likely solve the problem." He said: "While staying aware of your surroundings is the least you can do to stop your phone being snatched in the first place, there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and prevent the worst from happening. Recommended reading: "A lesser-known trick for iPhone users is to disable Control Centre access from the lock screen. "This prevents thieves from quickly switching off Wi-Fi or turning on Airplane Mode if they grab your phone while it's locked, helping you retain the ability to track the device via Find My iPhone and making them more likely to let go of the device. "Simply navigate to 'Face ID & Passcode' in settings and toggle off the option for accessing your control centre when the phone is locked."

Your iPhone Will Thank You: 12 Things to Quit Doing

Your iPhone is a versatile and powerful device, but certain habits can undermine its performance, security, and longevity. Many users unknowingly engage in practices that expose their devices and personal data to unnecessary risks. By identifying and addressing these behaviors, you can ensure your iPhone operates efficiently and securely. Below are the key habits you should stop immediately to protect your device and enhance its functionality in a new video from AppleDsign. Watch this video on YouTube. 1. Neglecting Lock Screen Optimization The lock screen is more than just a gateway to your iPhone—it's a critical tool for usability and security. If you're still relying on default shortcuts like the camera but rarely use them, consider customizing the lock screen to better suit your needs. Replace unused shortcuts with frequently accessed tools, such as the Calculator, Voice Memos, or even a smart home app. Additionally, simplify gestures to quickly toggle features like Focus Mode, which helps you manage notifications without distractions. A well-optimized lock screen not only saves time but also improves your overall user experience. 2. Using Weak Passcodes Weak passcodes, such as '123456' or '000000,' leave your iPhone highly vulnerable to unauthorized access. Upgrade to a strong alphanumeric passcode to enhance security. For an additional layer of protection, enable Face ID or Touch ID. These measures are especially important in public spaces where someone could observe you entering your passcode. For sensitive apps like banking or email, consider using unique passcodes or biometric authentication to safeguard your personal data in case of a breach. 3. Ignoring Privacy Settings Your iPhone's privacy settings are a powerful tool for protecting your personal information. If you haven't already, disable app tracking in the 'Privacy & Security' menu to prevent apps from collecting unnecessary data. Turn off 'Share iPhone Analytics' to stop sending usage data to Apple. These adjustments not only safeguard your privacy but can also improve battery life by reducing background activity. Regularly reviewing and updating your privacy settings ensures that your data remains secure. 4. Mismanaging Battery Charging Improper charging habits can significantly shorten your iPhone's battery lifespan. Avoid charging your device to 100% regularly; instead, aim to keep the battery level between 20% and 80% for optimal health. Enable 'Optimized Battery Charging' in the settings to slow battery wear over time. Additionally, stop force-closing apps unnecessarily, as reopening them consumes more power than leaving them idle in the background. If your iPhone has an Always On Display feature, consider disabling it to conserve battery life when the phone is not actively in use. 5. Skipping Software Updates Delaying iOS updates can expose your iPhone to security vulnerabilities and performance issues. Apple regularly releases updates that include critical bug fixes, security patches, and performance optimizations. Make it a habit to check for updates and install them promptly. Keeping your software up to date ensures your device remains secure and operates smoothly. 6. Using Public Wi-Fi Without Precautions Public Wi-Fi networks, while convenient, pose significant security risks. They can expose your data to hackers, especially on unsecured connections. Avoid using public Wi-Fi whenever possible, or enable a VPN to encrypt your data and protect sensitive information like passwords and financial details. This simple precaution can prevent unauthorized access to your personal information. 7. Charging on Public USB Ports Public USB charging ports may seem harmless, but they can be exploited for 'juice jacking' attacks, where hackers compromise your device through the connection. To avoid this risk, always carry your own charging cable and adapter or use a portable battery pack. These small adjustments can protect your device from potential security threats. 8. Overlooking App Permissions Many apps request permissions they don't actually need, which can compromise your privacy. Regularly review your app permissions in the 'Privacy & Security' menu. Revoke access to sensitive features like your location, microphone, or camera for apps that don't require them. This not only protects your privacy but also reduces unnecessary background activity, improving overall device performance. 9. Allowing Too Many Notifications Excessive notifications can be both distracting and detrimental to your iPhone's battery life. Take control of your notification settings by customizing them for each app. Disable notifications for non-essential apps and group alerts to minimize interruptions. This simple adjustment can help you stay focused while extending your device's battery life. 10. Forgetting to Back Up Your Data Failing to back up your iPhone regularly puts your data at risk of being lost due to accidental deletion, hardware failure, or other issues. Use iCloud or an external storage solution to back up your data automatically. Regular backups ensure that you can recover important files and information if something goes wrong, providing peace of mind. 11. Keeping Unused Apps Unused apps take up valuable storage space and can slow down your device. Periodically review your app library and delete apps you no longer use. For apps you rarely need but don't want to lose, consider offloading them. This feature allows you to free up storage space while retaining the app's data for future use. 12. Ignoring Storage Management Running out of storage can lead to sluggish performance and prevent you from downloading updates or taking photos. Regularly check your storage usage in the Settings app and clear out unnecessary files, such as old messages, duplicate photos, or large attachments. Use cloud storage options to free up space without losing access to important files. Proactive storage management ensures your iPhone remains fast and efficient. By addressing these common mistakes, you can significantly improve your iPhone's performance, security, and longevity. From optimizing your lock screen to managing app permissions and avoiding risky behaviors, these actionable tips empower you to take control of your device.
