Bahrain Renews Support for UN Peacekeepers on International Day of Peacekeeping
Foreign Minister Highlights Role of UN Forces in Global Stability and Urges Action on Gaza Crisis
Bahrain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, reaffirmed the Kingdom's strong support and deep appreciation for the efforts of United Nations peacekeeping forces in maintaining security, promoting peace, and enhancing regional and global stability — particularly in conflict and tension-stricken areas around the world.
Honoring Eight Decades of Sacrifice
Speaking on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed this year under the theme 'Peace Begins with Us: A Future for Peacekeeping', Minister Al Zayani praised the vital contributions of UN peacekeeping missions. He recognized the dedication and sacrifices of military personnel, police, and civilians who, for nearly 80 years, have played a key role in humanitarian service and in helping communities recover from the devastations of war.
He emphasized that their noble efforts have helped shape a world that aspires to be safer, more peaceful, just, and sustainable.
Urging Immediate Action in Gaza
Minister Al Zayani drew attention to the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, calling on the international community — especially the United Nations Security Council — to shoulder its responsibility by ensuring an immediate and lasting ceasefire, securing the release of hostages and detainees, and facilitating unhindered humanitarian aid delivery.
He urged implementation of the decisions made at the Bahrain Summit and the extraordinary Cairo Summit on Palestine, including the deployment of international UN peacekeeping forces in the occupied Palestinian territories. Such measures, he said, would protect civilians and support efforts toward a two-state solution in line with international resolutions and humanitarian law.
Bahrain's Vision for UN Partnership
The Foreign Minister also announced Bahrain's aspiration to serve as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, a move aimed at strengthening the Kingdom's contribution to global peace and security.
He stated that Bahrain seeks to enhance its diplomatic engagement in support of the UN's goals, particularly in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which form a cornerstone of the Kingdom's foreign policy.

'Next step: sovereignty!' he added. Katz said the initiative 'changes the face of the region and shapes the future of settlement for years to come'. Not all the 22 settlements are new, however. Some are existing outposts, while others are neighbourhoods of settlements that will become independent communities, according to the left-wing Israeli NGO Peace Now.

ASEAN, GCC, and China strengthen ties at summit

Future-Forward Cooperation Beyond immediate concerns, the summit laid the groundwork for future collaboration in critical areas such as energy security and sustainability, digital transformation, and food and agriculture. Commitments were made to promote sustainable energy transitions, diversify supply chains for critical minerals, and explore new business opportunities in clean energy. In the digital sphere, leaders aim to foster a cross-regional framework for the digital economy, encompassing e-commerce, fintech, and AI. The summit concluded with a pledge to advance inclusivity, sustainability, resilience, and equal partnership, charting a collective path toward a peaceful, prosperous, and equitable future for all regions involved.

Thousands of Palestinians grab UN warehouse
AFP | Deir el-Balah Thousands of Palestinians stormed a UN warehouse in Gaza's Deir el-Balah yesterday, AFP footage showed, as the UN's World Food Programme said its warehouse there was broken into. AFP footage showed crowds of Palestinians breaking into a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse and taking bags and cartons of food supplies as gunshots rang out. 'Hordes of hungry people broke into WFP's Al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir Al-Balah, Central Gaza, in search of food supplies that were pre-positioned for distribution,' WFP said in a statement on X. 'Initial reports indicate two people died and several were injured in the tragic incident,' it said, adding: 'WFP is still confirming details.' The issue of aid has come sharply into focus amid a hunger crisis after Israel imposed a full blockade on Gaza for over two months, before allowing supplies in at a trickle last week. 'Humanitarian needs have spiralled out of control after 80 days of complete blockade of all food assistance and other aid into Gaza,' the WFP statement said. Intense criticism has been levelled at the the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a USbacked group that has bypassed the longstanding UN-led system in the territory. The UN yesterday condemned the US-backed aid system in Gaza after 47 people were injured during a chaotic food distribution the day before when thousands of Palestinians desperate for food rushed into a GHF aid distribution site. A Palestinian medical source said at least one had died. 'WFP urgently calls for safe, unimpeded humanitarian access to enable orderly food distributions across Gaza immediately,' its statement said. Israel stepped up its military offensive in Gaza, ignited by an attack by Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, 2023, earlier this month.
