BMC extends deadline for waste bioremediation at Deonar for a third time

Indian Express9 hours ago

For the third time, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has extended its deadline for the Rs 2,368 crore tender to appoint a contractor to carry out bioremediation of 185 lakh tonnes of waste and reclaim 110 hectare of land at the Deonar dumpsite over a period of three years.
Bioremediation is a process involving treating garbage with the help of natural elements like air, sunlight, and microorganisms. Over time, as the biodegradable waste decomposes, the remaining non-biodegradable extracts are either recycled or treated artificially. The process of bioremediation is proposed at the Deonar dumpsite, which is among one of the sites that have been selected by the state government for constructing housing tenements for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) – a venture steered by the Adani group and Maharashtra government's Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).
Earlier on May 14, the civic body had floated a tender inviting bidders to clear the Deonar dumpsite through bioremediation with a deadline of June 3, which was later extended to June 23 and further, revised to July 1. On Saturday, for the third time in a month, the BMC has again extended the deadline for the bidders to July 4.
In the revised corrigendum, the civic body has revised the conditions, permitting a price escalation of five percent after 2 years.
According to officials, the deadline has been revised owing to extension requested by bidders amid several concerns. For the record, at least 23 bidders had come forward and expressed interest during a pre-bid meeting convened earlier.
'Primarily, there are two major concerns which have been raised by the bidders. Firstly, the concerns pertain to the price as there was no provision for price escalation in the initial tender clause. Furthermore, many interested bidders had requested allocation of more time to collect and submit the documents. Another reason is the unique nature of the work stipulated in the tender, wherein nearly 2 crore metric tonnes of legacy waste has to be cleared over a period of three years,' said a civic official. 'This is our final corrigendum, following which no other extensions will be granted.'
According to the civic data, of the 1.85 crore metric tonnes of waste which is currently stacked at the dumpsite, nearly 48 percent comprises construction debris, 41 percent is inert waste while 10 percent is accounted for by dry, miscellaneous waste.

Gold falls to one-month low as trade optimism spurs risk appetite

Gold prices declined to a one-month low. This happened because of reduced trade tensions between the United States and China. Synopsis Gold prices experienced a decline, reaching a more than one-month low due to easing U.S.-China trade tensions, which diminished safe-haven demand and encouraged investors to shift towards riskier assets. Adding to the market dynamics, President Trump's trade actions with Canada and comments on Federal Reserve interest rates influenced investor sentiment. Gold prices fell to their lowest in more than a month on Monday as easing trade tensions between U.S. and China dampened safe-haven demand and prompted investors to pivot toward riskier assets. ADVERTISEMENT * Spot gold was down 0.3% at $3,264.64 per ounce, as of 0055 GMT, after hitting its lowest level since May 29. * U.S. gold futures fell 0.4% to $3,275.30. * Asian shares firmed on Monday, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury yields edged higher. * The United States and China have resolved issues surrounding shipments of rare earth minerals and magnets to the U.S., Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday, adding the Trump administration's various trade deals with other countries could be done by the Sept. 1 Labor Day holiday. * Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly cut off trade talks with Canada on Friday over its tax targeting U.S. technology firms, saying that it was a "blatant attack" and that he would set a new tariff rate on Canadian goods within the next week. * The ceasefire between Iran and Israel after a 12-day conflict also appeared to be holding, further reducing safe-haven demand. ADVERTISEMENT * Stable geopolitical and economic conditions often reduce demand for gold as a safe-haven asset, while non-yielding bullion's appeal further wanes in a high-interest-rate environment. * Trump said on Friday he would not appoint anyone to head the U.S. Federal Reserve who would not lower interest rates. ADVERTISEMENT * Elsewhere, Senate Republicans pushed forward President Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill on Sunday in a marathon weekend session even as a nonpartisan forecaster said it would add an estimated $3.3 trillion to the nation's debt over a decade. * Spot silver was down 0.4% at $35.84 per ounce, platinum firmed 0.4% to $1,344.63, while palladium fell 0.6% to $1,127.23. Not just ‘Make in India', we call for ‘Invent in Telangana': Sridhar Babu

Hyderabad: 'Ourvision goes beyond 'Make in India'. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the people's government of Telangana is focused on 'Invent in Telangana'—a bold mission that reflects our commitment to innovation-driven growth,' said Minister for IT and Industries, Duddilla Sridhar Babu. Addressing the valedictory session of the Industrial Innovation and Technology Expo (IITEX) 2025, organised by the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) at HITEX on Sunday, the Minister highlighted Telangana's focused efforts to transform into a global innovation hub. 'In the first quarter of the current financial year, Telangana's Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded a Compound Monthly Growth Rate (CMGR) of 2.9%, far surpassing the national average of just 0.52%. The state's Gross State Value Added (GSVA) from industry touched Rs 2.77 lakh crore in 2024–25. We also witnessed growth of 15.6% in power consumption, 9.8% in GST collections, and 13.9% in payroll enrollments—all of which point to robust industrial momentum.' 'Contrary to misinformation that industries are moving out of Telangana, the truth is the opposite: In just the last 18 months, we have attracted over Rs 3 lakh crore in investments, including Rs 40,000 crore in the Life Sciences sector alone. We have launched 150 new projects, creating employment for over 51,000 people directly and 1.5 lakh people indirectly,' the Minister said. To decentralize and balance industrial growth, Telangana is developing Future City, AI City, Life Sciences City, and Green Industrial Corridors, all adhering to international standards. Special zoning strategies are also underway: Inside the Outer Ring Road (ORR): Focus on technology and services zones; Between ORR and the Regional Ring Road (RRR): Manufacturing zones; Beyond RRR: Agricultural and Rural Innovation zones. 'These steps are part of a well-planned ecosystem designed for sustained economic expansion,' he added. Minister Sridhar Babu emphasized the government's focused efforts to strengthen Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of India's economy. 'In the past 18 months alone, over 15,000 new MSMEs have been established in Telangana. Our goal is to increase MSMEs' contribution to Telangana's GSDP to 10%,' he said. To achieve this, a dedicated MSME policy has been formulated and is being actively implemented. The government is also developing MSME parks in every district, with priority support for women, SC, and ST entrepreneurs.

Post Op Sindoor, India to fast-track launch of 52 defence surveillance satellites

NEW DELHI: With the need for 'deep' as well as 'persistent' surveillance of enemy territory being reinforced by Operation Sindoor , India plans to fast-track the launch of 52 dedicated satellites for the armed forces. It is also in the process of finalising a comprehensive military space doctrine. Phase 3 of Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) programme, which was approved by the PM-led cabinet committee on security in Oct last year at a cost of Rs 26,968 crore, involves the construction and launch of 21 satellites by Isro and 31 by three private companies. The first of these satellites is to be launched by April next year, with all 52 to be deployed before 2029-end, as part of the project being spearheaded by Defence Space Agency (DSA) under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) of defence ministry. 'Work is underway to compress these timelines to launch the satellites faster into the low earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit. The three private companies that have got the contracts have been told to speed up building of the satellites,' a source told TOI. 'The aim of SBS-3 is to cover much larger areas of China and Pakistan, as well as the Indian Ocean Region, with shorter revisit times (interval between two consecutive surveillance sweeps of the same location) and much better resolution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The space doctrine is also being fine-tuned,' he added. Parallelly, IAF is pursuing the case for three high-altitude platform system (HAPS) aircraft, which are basically unmanned aerial vehicles or 'pseudo-satellites' that operate in the stratosphere for long durations on ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) missions, as reported by TOI earlier. During Operation Sindoor, which saw intense hostilities with Pakistan from May 7 to 10, India used domestic satellites like Cartosat, as well as foreign commercial ones, for tracking military movements in Pakistan. 'We need to shorten our OODA (observe, orient, decide and act) loop. The faster India gets the 52-satellite constellation up in space the better,' another source said. India also needs to put in place its satellite shield since China is developing weapons like direct ascent anti-satellite missiles, co-orbital satellites, electronic warfare equipment, and directed energy weapons like high-powered lasers to contest or deny other nations access to the space domain. China's military space programme has expanded from operating just 36 satellites in 2010 to over 1,000 by 2024, with 360 of them dedicated to ISR missions. At a seminar earlier this month, IDS chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit had stressed the need to extend India's 'surveillance envelope' while underlining the critical role of 'real-time situational awareness' in conflicts. 'We must detect, identify and track potential threats not when they approach our borders, but when they are still in their staging areas, airfields and bases, deep within an adversary's territory,' he said. China's creation of PLA Aerospace Force in April last year underlined its recognition of space as the 'ultimate high ground' in modern warfare. 'Their satellites have recently demonstrated sophisticated 'dogfighting' manoeuvres in LEO, practising tactics designed to track and potentially disable adversary space assets. They have evolved from a 'kill chain' to a 'kill mesh' — an integrated network that seamlessly interweaves ISR satellites with weapon systems,' Air Marshal Dixit said.
