Stavanger: World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh pulled off a stunning victory against former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of the ongoing Norway Chess 2025 tournament, turning the game around from a losing position on Sunday.
This marked Gukesh's first-ever classical win over the Norwegian grandmaster. The 19-year-old also became the second Indian player to beat Carlsen in the history of the competition after Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.
Carlsen had an upper hand over Gukesh for most of the time in the match, but in the end, he couldn't control his nerves, and the teenager turned the tables around and went on to win the match.
With this win, D Gukesh jumped to third spot in the Norway Chess 2025 points table with 8.5 points, and now he is just one point behind Carlsen and American Fabiano Caruana.
Earlier on May 27, the marquee clash of Round One at Norway Chess 2025 lived up to expectations as Magnus Carlsen launched a classic king hunt to defeat reigning World Champion D Gukesh in a thrilling encounter. This was their first classical match since Gukesh won the world title, and it also marked Carlsen's return to individual classical chess after nearly a year.
Reacting to the upset victory, Gukesh's coach, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, praised the teenager's resilience and fighting spirit.
"We have to give a lot of credit to Gukesh for his stubbornness and for his resourcefulness because I think he was aware that he was dead lost for so long, yet he kept kicking, he kept kicking, and the time went lower, the more chances he had to actually do something with the position. I don't think his intention was to win that, but yeah, I'm sure he is happy," Vishnu Prasanna said.
The win has added further excitement to the tournament, with the race for the top spot tightening as it enters its final rounds.

Taliban bans chess in Afghanistan over religious concerns
Kabul: The Taliban has banned chess in Afghanistan due to religious concerns, continuing its opposition to various forms of entertainment and sports, Khaama Press reported. As per reports, the decision was taken due to "religious considerations" and restrictions announced by the Taliban's Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. The decision places chess-related activities on hold indefinitely in Afghanistan. Officials from the Taliban-led Ministry of Sports confirmed the suspension of chess activities on May 11, stating that the sport will remain banned in the nation until suitable responses are found regarding religious concerns. As per reports, no activities related to chess would be allowed to resume without addressing these issues. Taliban's Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has also dissolved the Afghanistan Chess Federation, terming the game "haram" (forbidden) as per the interpretation of the Islamic law, Khaama Press reported. The decision follows a growing trend of restrictions imposed by the Taliban on cultural, social and sporting events in Afghanistan since it seized power. Before the Taliban's announcement regarding the ban, several chess players and enthusiasts reportedly requested permission and financial support from the Taliban-led Ministry of Sports to continue their activities. However, the Taliban announced the ban, further complicating their efforts to play the game. Chess, once considered an intellectual sport in Afghanistan, has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, with the national federation operating under the Taliban-led Ministry of Sports, Khaama Press reported. The Taliban's recent stance, citing Islamic legal interpretations, demonstrated their broader strategy to restrict cultural and recreational activities in Afghanistan. The ban on playing chess demonstrates the Taliban's increasing restrictions on freedoms in Afghanistan. The Taliban has also imposed several restrictions on women in Afghanistan. It remains to be seen how long these policies will last or whether the international community will be able to pressurise the Taliban to reverse their decisions. Earlier in February, the Taliban announced that students from March 22 will have to wear the new Taliban-issued uniform. The decision was published on February 27. According to the notice, students in classes 1st to 9th must wear a blue shirt, pants, and a white hat. Students in classes 10th to 12th must wear a white shirt, pants and a headscarf or turban, Khaama Press reported. Previously, Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada signed a nine-point decree stating that all public and private school uniforms would include a shirt, pants, turban, and white hat. The bill did not include the details regarding uniforms for female teachers or students. The colour of the uniform for female students is black. Since seizing power in Afghanistan, the Taliban has banned girls from pursuing studies in schools above sixth class and closed the doors of universities and medical educational centres to them.

Muscat Classic Bodybuilding Championship in Al Amerat to begin in January
MUSCAT: Oman's young bodybuilders are gearing up to take part in the first edition of Muscat Classic Bodybuilding Championship which will take place on January 30 and 31, 2025 in the Wilayat of Al Amerat. The two-day event will be organised by domestic experienced national bodybuilding coach, Haitham bin Sadiq al Zadjali, who is two-time Mr. Olympia champion and World Champion titleholder. The event is under supervision and approval of Oman Bodybuilding Committee (OBC). Previous Bodybuilding Championship Competitions Coach Haitham bin Sadiq al Zadjali stated on importance of this event as he said: 'I am very pleased that I have received an approval from OBC to organise this event in Al Amerat. There are a lot of potential young bodybuilders in this city and this championship will act as a great platform to vie for the top places. Special thanks goes to OBC for their collaboration as well as the support received from Mohammed bin Ramadan al Balushi, a member of Majlis Ash'shura representing Al Amerat.' Muscat Classic Bodybuilding Championship 'All the participants are gearing up for the event from now and they will continue their preparations to vie for the top positions. We are eager to see strong participation from young talents in this championship offering them an ideal platform to compete across various categories. Prizes have been allocated for the top three winners in each division. I am also working to have a better support from private sector and the sponsors in the coming weeks,' he concluded. The debut bodybuilding championship in Al Amerat will feature various categories including men's bodybuilding in weight classes 65 kg, 75 kg and above 75 kg. In the physique competitions, categories will be based on heights including up to 170 cm, 174 cm and above 174 cm.
