Q) MY cat, Chairman Meow, seems to groom herself constantly. Is this a sign of boredom?
She has plenty of toys, scratch posts and beds. She's five. I live near a busy road so she's a house cat. Should I give her outside access?
JUDE BROWN, Birmingham
Sean says: Firstly, I love this name for a cat. I had a patient that was named the same years ago, and it always made me chuckle.
Over-grooming can be a sign of stress, boredom or an appeasement behaviour that is self-soothing as it releases happy hormones.
She's got plenty of enrichment indoors, but I wonder if you could play more interactive games with her, such as scattering feeding treats, using fishing rod toys and the like. If she's not losing hair, it may just be that Chairman Meow is a fastidiously clean and well-presented cat.
Q) BORIS, my Labradoodle, was running on the beach when he just collapsed.
He lay down for several minutes then got up again and has been fine since. He's nine and is a big dog.
How concerned should I be?
GILLIAN MANN, Edinburgh
F1 stars' pets including driver with thirteen cats, Leclerc's yacht-loving pooch and Hamilton's dog Roscoe with own car
Sean says: That is worrying. And it raises more questions than answers.
Is it the first time this has happened? Was he seemingly conscious or absent while laying down, did he yelp or whine?
What were his limbs doing? Was he limping or seem pained after?
Was he salivating? If it was hot out, how was his breathing?
All these factors would lead vets to rule in or rule out certain conditions.
If it happens again, try to video it on your phone and get him checked by your vet as soon as possible.
Hopefully it's a one-off but it could be an early sign of something else worth investigating.
Q) WHAT precautions should I take with my dog Ted now that it's getting hotter?
He's a Labrador cross who is eight. I always make sure he has shade, but should I consider a fan after the recent hot summers? What about cooling vests on walks?
SIMON EVANS, Barnstaple, Devon
Sean says: First thing with Labs, in particular, is a weight-loss programme and diet if he is overweight.
Obesity can really make things tough on our pets in hot weather.
Your vet practice can help assess, or you can look on our tails.com YouTube channel for videos on 'body condition scoring'.
I'm not a fan of putting more layers on a dog for exercise. I prefer to recommend walking them in the cooler periods of the day.
Cool water and shade should be available always, and a cooling mat for Ted to lie on if he so wishes.
Q) TWO dogs and two cats have moved in next door, and Bella, our 12-year-old West Highland terrier, is now weeing a lot.
She even wakes me in the middle of the night to go into the garden.
Could the new cats and dogs be affecting her?
She's had a blood test, and there's no diabetes, but there is a lot of protein, which affects kidneys.
VIRGINIA SPRING, Southend-on-Sea, Essex
Sean says: Certainly a switch in circumstances in the home, or next door's garden, can lead to changes in toileting behaviour.
But I would associate that more with male dogs marking their territory.
The flag here is excessive protein in her blood. Has Bella had a urine test too?
If not, pop a tray under her when she squats and decant the urine into a sterile jar from your vet.
This warrants further investigation.

Ralph and Walker the Newfoundlands are hero dogs known for their ability in the water
Credit: Supplied
TWO Newfoundlands, Ralph and Walker, took to the water with a group of injured veterans as part of a wellbeing event to boost mental health.
The dogs jumped into a lake and gently pulled the ex-servicemen back to dry land – leaving smiles all round.
Their owner, paramedic Pete Lewin, of Leicester, said: 'Newfies are known for their abilities in the water.
"But they also have incredible personalities and being with them has amazing restorative impacts.'
Many of the veterans who attended the event last month are members of military charity Blesma – the UK's limbless veterans association – and spokeswoman Sarah Criddle told Paws and Claws: 'The wellbeing factor was so powerful.'

Howl to communicate with your dogs

A pet expert has explained the wide range of emotions dogs experience
Credit: Supplied
A LEADING pet expert has revealed the secrets to communicating with your dog.
Jo Middleton, owner of learning platform Canine Principles, believes pups are often misunderstood.
The co-presenter of The Dog Expert Podcast said: 'What if your dog's 'bad behaviour' isn't disobedience, but a communication issue?
If a dog feels safe, it is so much more capable of learning and adapting.'
Dogs experience a broad spectrum of emotions. Jo said joy is often shown through tail wagging and excitement.
Fear is indicated by cowering, shaking or avoiding eye contact.
Frustration can cause barking, chewing or pacing.
Grief can lead to withdrawal. But there could be subtle differences that owners also need to be aware of.
Jo added: 'A wagging tail doesn't always mean happiness – the position and speed tell you more.
'Whining and barking convey different things depending on context. Sudden shifts in behaviour may be your dog's way of signalling distress.'
She urged owners to use positive reinforcement, such as verbal cues like 'good boy' or treats when communicating.

Andy Murray's life since tennis retirement – Wimbledon snub, new job, life with wife Kim
Andy Murray's life since tennis retirement – Wimbledon snub, new job, life with wife Kim Tennis icon Andy Murray has been a busy man since retiring from top-level tennis, even taking up a brief coaching role and filming an advert that was subsequently banned Andy Murray with wife Kim during his theatre tour (Image:) Andy Murray has kept himself busy since retiring from tennis following the 2024 Olympic Games. The Scot won three Grand Slam titles following an illustrious career that saw him compete with the 'big three' of his era: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Murray remains a towering figure in British tennis while also pursuing other interests over the last 12 months. As well as spending extra time with his wife, Kim, and their four children, he has completed a live theatre tour and spent extra time trying to lower his golf handicap. A year on since he bowed out of the sport as a player, here's the lowdown on the 38-year-old's life now, including a short-lived new job and an advert that was banned from TV… New job with rival Murray unexpectedly dipped his toe in coaching since calling it a day with a short-lived stint working with one of his great rivals, Djokovic. The pair linked up before this year's Australian Open. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Murray insisted he would have no issue being ranted at by the fiery Serbian. He said: "Providing that he's giving his best effort and trying as hard as he can, I'm absolutely fine with him expressing himself how he wants." Murray admitted the call to work with the 24-time Grand Slam winner was as big a shock to him as it was to the rest of the tennis world. He said: "I was enjoying being away from the tour, and I really hadn't watched much tennis. Article continues below "I had not missed playing or competing or being on a tennis court at all. I was actually playing golf. We'd actually been exchanging messages. Novak had messaged me just wanting to chat. Murray during his brief spell working with Novak Djokovic (Image: Getty) "I was on the 17th hole of the golf course, and the guy I was playing with said to me, 'Do you know what's next?' I was like, 'No, not really.' He said, 'Do you have any plans to do any coaching?' And I said, 'Honestly, I can't think of anything worse to do right now.' "And then 30 minutes later I was in the car and I called Novak, and then we had a conversation and he asked if I would be interested in helping, which I obviously wasn't expecting. "I said to him, 'Look, I need to think about it and talk to my family.' So I spoke to them and, after a couple of days, I thought that it was a pretty unique opportunity and experience." However, the partnership lasted just one Grand Slam, as it was announced in May that they would no longer work together. Murray said: "Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together, and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months. I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season." Speaking tour Murray recently completed a live speaking tour, 'Centre Stage,' during which he discussed his career in front of a live theatre audience. The tour took place in June and included appearances at theatres in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London's Apollo, and the New Wimbledon Theatre. Guests included wife Kim, mother Judy, and tennis icon John McEnroe. John McEnroe made an appearance on Andy Murray's 'Centre Stage' tour (Image: Getty) Wimbledon snub Despite his connection with Wimbledon, Murray decided to skip the 2025 tournament. Explaining his decision, he told the Guardian: "I'm not working there. I don't go to watch tennis as a fan. But if one of my kids wanted to go along and watch, I obviously would take them. If a British player made the final, I'd go. "I went to the Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz final a couple of years ago, just because I had a feeling it was going to be a great match. But I won't be there otherwise." Banned advert Murray appeared in an advert in Australia that was banned after viewers complained it "promoted kidnapping." The two-time Wimbledon champion featured in a commercial for Uber Eats that aired during this year's Australian Open. The ad shows Murray being approached by two delivery drivers at his hotel. He tells them he didn't order anything before they reply, "We're here for you, actually," before saying, "We get all kinds of stuff now." Murray is then told to "get in the bag" before the tennis icon flees down the corridor. Murray then jumps out of a glass window before running off. A message appears on the screen saying, "Order Andy Murray on Uber Eats Now. We haven't caught him yet, but he can't run forever." However, after complaints to the Australian TV watchdog, the Ad Standards Community Panel, the ad will not be shown on TV again. The panel upheld the complaint about kidnapping, saying it " depicted violent and threatening behaviour." However, it conceded it was "unlikely to lead to copycat behaviour." One complaint said: "Why is kidnapping being promoted as a normal act. It is against the law. The Uber ads will teach children it is OK to kidnap people." Improving his golf Tennis retirement has allowed Murray to devote more time to another of his sporting passions, golf. The seven-handicapper played at the BMW PGA Championship's Pro-Am in Wentworth last year and won the first BTJA Mike Dickson Golf Day, held in memory of the long-serving Daily Mail tennis reporter, who died while covering the 2024 Australian Open. Murray said of golf: "It's a different sort of nerves, because you are comfortable in the sort of tennis environment. I'm not thinking I'm going to walk out on the tennis court and forget how to hit the ball. Murray has been honing his golf game since tennis retirement (Image: Getty Images) "Whereas here [on the golf course], there's people standing five metres away from where I'm driving, and I'm like, I'm useless at this game. You just want to try and keep the ball in play and don't mess up too much. I'm obviously getting to practice a lot more than the average person. "I obviously played a bit when I was younger, and if I can get the right sort of lessons and practise the right things, then yeah, I've got a chance of doing that [becoming a scratch player]." Life with Kim Murray's wife, Kim, has been a constant by his side over the last twenty years. Murray has regularly praised his other half, who prefers to stay out of the limelight as much as possible. Speaking to the New York Times, he said: "She doesn't like being in the newspapers, and people commenting on what she's wearing and how she looks, and those sorts of things. Article continues below "That's one of the things that I guess she's also sacrificed, a little bit, for our relationship, and I appreciate that a lot. You're in these huge cities meeting new people all the time and it would be easy to get your head turned. But Kim's always been there for me. She really cares about me and helps with so many things. She always has. That's why we have such a great relationship."

How to get Kate Middleton's luscious locks in four easy steps – and everything you should avoid
HAIR APPARENT How to get Kate Middleton's luscious locks in four easy steps – and everything you should avoid Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THERE are some people who look effortless and chic no matter what they do. And Kate Middleton absolutely falls into that category. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Kate is known for her stunning hair 2 Oats is one of the royal's secrets Google search data reveals there are an average of 11,000 searches for the Princess of Wales' hair made every month. Roxana Diaconu, founder and CEO at Roxana Aesthetics Clinic, reveals what makes Kate's hair so amazing - and how you can achieve the same look. While genetics influence hair quality, there are reliable, natural and practical hair care methods to achieve the same glossy, luscious locks as Kate, according to the expert. EAT PROTEIN A healthy lifestyle is vital for healthy hair. Protein makes up a large part of your hair, so if you aren't eating enough of it, your hair will suffer. Eating protein is especially important, as that is what your hair is made of. Roxana says: "We recommend incorporating more leafy greens, like spinach and broccoli, as well as fruits, eggs, nuts, fish and beans." Kate reportedly starts her day with oats, which are high in protein, carbohydrates and fibre, and a breakfast drink containing nutritionally-dense foods. Kale, spinach and spirulina are three of the Princess of Wales' favourites to include, which are packed with protein and healthy vitamins. TAKE VITAMINS Minerals and vitamins, such as vitamin A, B, C, D and E, among others, are used in the hair growth process and will contribute to normal hair growth. Why Princess Charlotte is the royal family's REAL secret weapon However, if you are suffering from hair loss it is important to consult your doctor before taking vitamins in order to determine the type of hair loss first, the experts say. Zinc, iodine and iron are minerals that reportedly promote good hair growth and the best sources can be found in the same foods recommended above. Roxana says: "Kate is known to eat super healthy meals, including watermelon salad with feta, avocado and cucumber. "Between meals she snacks on goji berries, raw fruit and vegetables, all which are packed with nutrients that promote strong hair growth." EXERCISE Roxana insists exercise is necessary because it will improve blood circulation, which will supply more oxygen and nutrients to your hair follicles, . The hair pro said: "It's no secret that Kate Middleton loves health and fitness and makes it a key part of her lifestyle. "Even at school she was captain of the women's field hockey team. She now reportedly follows a varied workout routine consisting of running, spinning, yoga, weight training and HIIT (high-intensity interval training), among others. "Kate's hair will likely be enriched due to benefiting from the nutrients and oxygen and healthy blood circulation she receives from such a complex exercise routine." B SMART Roxana recommends Biotin (vitamin B7) supplements for hair growth. It's a type of vitamin which helps improve hair, skin and nails. Biotin is also found in foods such as eggs, fruit, veg and legumes such as beans, peas and lentils. She says: "Vegetable lentil curry is apparently a favourite of the Princess of Wales and the dish was a particular craving while she was pregnant."
