Malaysia Techlympics draws 1.4 million annual participants since 2022
Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohamad Yusof Apdal revealed participation figures of 1.03 million in 2022, 1.82 million in 2023 and 1.31 million so far in 2024.
The hybrid format combining physical and online events since June has expanded accessibility across the country.
Mohamad Yusof said this approach supports broader community involvement in advancing Malaysia's science, technology and innovation goals.
He spoke during the East Coast Zone Malaysia Techlympics 2025 launch at Terengganu Science and Creativity Centre.
The programme aligns with the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Action Plan 2021-2030's emphasis on inclusive STI awareness.
Malaysia Techlympics competitions cover emerging technologies like AI, IoT, drones, coding and robotics for participants aged seven to 30.
The ongoing East Coast Zone event has drawn over 2,000 participants from 120 schools across Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang.
Mohamad Yusof highlighted the programme's rural outreach ensuring STEM education access for underserved communities.
More than 1,500 students and 1,000 teachers from East Coast states have participated in training sessions, including virtual and physical Training of Trainers programmes.
The initiative demonstrates Malaysia's commitment to developing future-ready talent through inclusive technology education. – Bernama

He added that the combination of large-scale data centre infrastructure, advances in AI technology, and progressive government policies will further position Johor as a potential regional digital innovation hub. 'This initiative will not only drive economic growth but also improve the quality of life for the people of Johor through high-skilled job opportunities, the development of new industries, and smart solutions to everyday challenges,' he said. In the same post, Onn Hafiz also shared that he met with Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo to discuss the direction of the state's digital development at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur today. He said the meeting served as an important platform to strengthen Johor's role in the Data Centre Task Force (DCTF) and ensure that data centre development is carried out comprehensively, sustainably, and with real impact for the people. –BERNAMA

Europe's Ariane 6 Rocket Launches Into Space
PARIS, Aug 13 (Bernama-WAM) -- Europe's Ariane 6 heavy-lift rocket launched for the third time on Wednesday, carrying an advanced weather and climate satellite into orbit, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported. The rocket lifted off from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, and is operated by French company Arianespace on behalf of the European Space Agency. Ariane 6 made its debut with a test flight in July 2024, followed by a second mission in March this year. On its latest flight, Ariane 6 carried Metop-SGA1, a 4,040-kilogram weather satellite. The spacecraft was placed into a polar orbit about 800 kilometres above Earth 64 minutes after liftoff, Arianespace said on X.

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Sabah FC announced the appointment of Jean-Paul de Marigny as a Head Coach of The Rhinos for the 2025/2026 Malaysia League season effective today. Sabah FC in a statement here said Jean-Paul from Australia has an extensive experience in the Australian League with Western Sydney Wanderers, Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory as League Champions in 2014/15 and 2017/18 season. Jean-Paul has also been involved in various age groups for Australian national teams, most recently as Assistant Coach to Brad Maloney for the Australian Under-17 National Team.
