Eagles' 12 most intriguing players: Why No. 5 is Birds' version of 'Ted Lasso' character
Yes, the Eagles need to replace both players, and that will certainly be a main story line during training camp, which begins with the first practice on July 23.
Rather, it is possible that Cooper DeJean could end up replacing both Slay, who was named to the Pro Bowl in three of his five seasons with the Eagles, and Gardner-Johnson, who was third in the NFL last season with six interceptions.

And all the while, DeJean could also play his usual nickel corner spot.
That could make DeJean like the Roy Kent character on the show "Ted Lasso," when fans chant his name as being "here, there, and every(expletive)where!"
That's why DeJean is No. 5 on our list of 12 most intriguing Eagles heading into the start of training camp on July 22. We're counting them down each weekday from No. 12 to No. 1. The series began July 7 and will culminate with the start of camp.
So it's not a question of whether DeJean will play as much as where DeJean will play. The Eagles already saw DeJean's value when he returned an interception return for a touchdown in the Eagles' 40-22 demolition of the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Feb. 9.
So it was long expected that DeJean could end up as the outside corner in place of Slay when the Eagles are in base defense. Yet in June, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio revealed that DeJean could also be the safety next to Reed Blankenship, also when the Eagles are in base defense.
Last season, the Eagles were in base about 12% of the time. Perhaps that percentage increases because of DeJean's ability to play both cornerback and safety, in addition to his role as a nickel. It should be noted that DeJean played all three spots in college at the University of Iowa.
For the record, DeJean expressed a willingness to do whatever is asked of him, and that he is comfortable playing all across the secondary.
"I'll play wherever, to be honest," DeJean said. "Wherever they put me on the football field, I'll play there. As long as I'm out there, I'll be ready to play no matter what position − whether it's corner, nickel or safety."
The difference is that this season, DeJean's position could vary not only from game to game, but from play to play.
For example, the Eagles are facing the Cowboys in their season opener on Sept. 4. The Cowboys have two top wide receivers in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. It's easy to see DeJean lined up on the outside opposite Quinyon Mitchell to take one of those players in base defense.

Then if the Cowboys are in a favorable running situation, DeJean might move to safety to stop the run. Or if the Cowboys are in a 3rd-and-long, DeJean might move to nickel.
If DeJean is lined up at safety, then Kelee Ringo is on the outside at corner. If he's outside at corner, perhaps Sydney Brown is at safety next to Blankenship. Or it's conceivable that rookie Drew Mukuba, drafted as a safety but with a background at nickel, could be at nickel while DeJean mans either outside corner or safety.
All of this, of course, is to maximize having the Eagles' best four or five defensive backs on the field. DeJean is the one who makes that possible.
The Eagles didn't have to worry about that as much because they had established players in Slay and Gardner-Johnson at outside corner and safety, respectively.
"Last year it was a good fit for where we were personnel-wise," Fangio said about DeJean playing nickel. "This year that could change."

Joey Bosa says he's hung out with new Bills teammates more than any other in career
For the first time in his professional career, five-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Joey Bosa is playing for a new team. And that's not the only new first of his career. "I hung out more with teammates in Buffalo in the 6 weeks I was here than probably my entire career," the 10-year NFL veteran defensive end said to the press. Bosa joined the Bills on a one-year deal. One in which he's hoping to buck the trends of his past injury history and compete for a championship with a playoff contender. His comments on hanging out with his teammates read as consistent with what's known about the Bills roster, that they spend much of their time together off the field, forging a strong bond that translates to the locker room and onto the field in game play as well. The adjustment to his new team as well as to Western New York has been a good one for the 30-year-old and his family. "It's nice, it gets repetitive every year the same thing over and over again, I mean I loved my time with the Chargers and I wouldn't trade it for anything, but I think it was just getting a little redundant, especially with my injuries the last few years, I needed a fresh start, and new scenery, so it's been a really pleasant surprise, getting to know Buffalo and Orchard Park, it's been beautiful," Bosa shared. "I have a yard, I have space to live and my dog can run around and we've got families of geese in the backyard that we've been following, my fiancée loves it, the fans are amazing unless you're at dinner and they're screaming mid dinner, I can't remember the song (probably shout) but it was quite the experience." Buffalo won't need him to play every snap, as they have defensive end depth to keep his workload manageable so as to maximise his opportunities to remain healthy and impact games. They are hoping he can form a dynamic threat across from edge rusher Greg Rousseau, and with A.J. Epenesa and Landon Jackson in their rotation. The group provides the Bills with tremendous defensive length against opponents (Jackson - 33 1/4" arms, Epenesa - 34 1/2" arms, Walker - 34 1/4" arms, Bosa - 33 3/8" arms). "I'm gonna try to be the player that I've always been," he noted. "Like I mentioned, stay healthy, I think I can be dominant still. I'm still only just 30. I'm not washed just yet. I'm getting there, but I got a little bit longer." The veteran pass rusher reached the playoffs three times in nine years with the Chargers, including two wild-card round exits. Buffalo, meanwhile, has made the playoffs in seven of the last eight years and is a Super Bowl contender. "Let's hope I don't mess that up now," Bosa added. "Hopefully, I can be a tool to help push it over that edge to get to the place that obviously everybody here has their eyes set on. It's fun coming to an organization that has been there and done it. They all have a really common goal, and we all know what that is. Every team has that same goal, but not every team has the same chance of actually achieving that goal. So yeah, it's exciting. I just want to do anything I can to help the team win, and hopefully we just continue the success." I mean, he's a dog. He's everything I've seen watching him, like when he was on the Chargers, you know? So, it's fun to be out there with a with a guy like that," Rousseau said about his new teammate after Monday's practice. "It's a blessing. Also, just a really cool dude. Off the field, we have conversations about random stuff every day. When asked what stands out about Bosa, he also noted his work ethic and attitude. 'He's consistent, you know what I'm saying? The way he just comes to work, has a good attitude," Rousseau added. "Obviously, his experience, you know, so I mean, we're really happy to have him." Bosa is embracing the fresh start and the high expectations that come with joining a championship contender in Buffalo, and is confident in what he has to offer. "I think I still have a lot left to give playing-wise, not just wisdom-wise," he said. "As long as I stay healthy like we're talked about, which I'm going to do everything in my power to do that and be as helpful as I can to this team, I think I can go out there and have a great year."

Recapping first padded practice of Philadelphia Eagles training camp
With Day 5 of practices complete, we're recapping the sessions from Tuesday morning with three takeaways from the first fully padded practice Welcome to the fifth day of training camp for the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia has had four training camp practices and a Friday walkthrough before the NFL celebrates 'Back Together Weekend'. The Eagles have returned to the NovaCare Complex for a Tuesday morning session that will be the team's first fully padded practice of the summer. The Eagles will be on the field for approximately 90 minutes, followed by a walkthrough on Wednesday. With Day 5 of practices complete, we're recapping the sessions from Tuesday morning with three takeaways. Jihaad Campbell shines with Zack Baun out. The rookie had the spotlight all to himself with Zack Baun and Nakobe Dean out, and Campbell provided a sideline-to-sideline impact on the run and the pass. Defensive injuries Two key defensive players were absent from the Eagles' camp with injuries. That comes on the heels of Jalen Carter missing the first few days of camp and rookie Andrew Mukuba dealing with a shoulder injury. Zack Baun and Nolan Smith, two of the Eagles' top defenders, were both absent from practice on Tuesday and could miss time. Baun suffered a back contusion and Smith a concussion during practice on Monday, Dave Zangaro reports. The Eagles are scheduled to practice on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday, and next Tuesday. They will have an off day next Wednesday before the preseason opener against the Bengals. Can Elijah Cook steal a roster spot? Roster spots are earned and not stolen, but through one week of training camp at the NovaCare Complex, it's the big, physical receiver, Elijah Cook, making a name for himself ahead of players with bigger expectations. The Eagles signed Cooks to a reserve/future contract following the Super Bowl. Cooks signed with the Eagles' practice squad on Jan. 14 after spending most of the 2024 season on the Jaguars' practice squad. The 26-year-old wideout has made a dazzling catch in each of the past three practices.
