Was the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season the WORST ever?

As fans continue their post-mortem into the recently concluded 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, the numbers suggest how weird – possibly bad – this season was.
Mamelodi Sundowns' dominance and the Royal AM issue aside, we saw a general lack of season-on-season improvements on a team level.

Let's look at FIVE key questions in-depth:
THREE – Only 3 teams had more points this season compared to last, making this the lowest number of 'improvements' in PSL history.
Those teams were Orlando Pirates, Richards Bay and Sekhukhune United. Fewest number of point 'improvements' in a season: 2024/25 – 3 teams improved* 2002/03, 2003/04, 2019/20, 2020/21 – 4 teams Historical average – 6 teams
*The Royal AM expulsion plays a big role here, with many teams not getting the chance to play for points against them or seeing points won deducted.
THREE – Only three teams scored more goals this season compared to last, namely Mamelodi Sundowns (+13), Sekhukhune United (+8) and AmaZulu (+5).
This represented the lowest number of goal 'improvements' in PSL history. Fewest number of goal 'improvements' in a season: 2024/25 – 3 teams improved their goals* 2002/03, 2003/04, 2019/20, 2020/21 – 4 teams
FOUR – Only 4 teams ended the season with a positive goal difference, the worst tally for a season in PSL history. Seasons with the fewest positive goal difference teams: 2024/25 – 4 teams* 2004/05, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2014/15, 2017/18, 2022/23 – 6 teams Historical average: 7 teams
FOUR – Only 4 teams won more than two games in a row at any point this season, namely Mamelodi Sundowns (best run was 10 games), Orlando Pirates (7), Magesi FC (4) and Stellenbosch FC (3). How many teams have won 2+ games in a row in the last few seasons? 2024/25 – 4 teams* 2023/24 – 10 teams 2022/23 – 11 teams Average last six years: 8 teams
NINE – Only 9 teams won more than two away games throughout the 2024/25 campaign – only the third time in PSL history that fewer than 10 teams won 3+ away games. 2024/25 – 6 teams won just 2 away games all season*
2012/13 – 7 teams
2003/04 – 7 teams

Orlando Pirates rumours: Mixed news on Sesane, Saleng

Today's Orlando Pirates rumours involve a timeframe for Thabiso Sesane's return and further speculation on Monnapule Saleng. Saleng hasn't played a competitive game for Pirates in 2025. Meanwhile, Sesane is returning from a serious injury that required surgery. Saleng started this campaign well with five goals in 13 outings, including a strike in the MTN8 final, but the second half of 2024-2025 has been a horror show for the player. He hasn't played a single competitive minute since the turn of the year. Ironically, his last minutes in a Pirates jersey came in a Caf Champions League group stage match against Al Ahly in early December, the club that tried to sign him. He's been away with a Bafana Bafana CHAN qualifier side for a two-legged battle with Egypt. After starting the first leg, which ended 1-1, Saleng was released from the squad and has returned to Pirates. The writing is on the wall for his Pirates career. THREE potential replacements for Saleng at Orlando Pirates Will the Chiefs slayer return? Image: @orlandopirates / X Thabiso Sesane started the campaign in domineering form, becoming a pillar in the heart of their defence. It was, therefore, a massive blow to the club and player when he was cruelly struck down with a serious tendon injury in February. The rupture was deemed bad enough for the 25-year-old to undergo surgery. Full recovery could take anywhere between four and six months. If Sesane's rehabilitation goes well, he could be back in time for the start of the 2025-2026 season. What did Mabasa and Makgopa do to offend Hugo Broos? Is Sesane crucial for Orlando Pirates' title chances next season? Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
