Russia launches smallest nighttime attack on Ukraine in months in run-up to possible peace talks

Lower-level talks would amount to simply 'dragging out' any peace process, Podolyak said. European leaders have recently accused Putin of dragging his feet in peace efforts while he attempts to press his bigger army's battlefield initiative and capture more Ukrainian land.

Russia effectively rejected an unconditional 30-day ceasefire demanded by Ukraine and Western European leaders from Monday, when it fired more than 100 drones at Ukraine. Putin instead offered direct peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on Thursday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted a Russian delegation would be in Istanbul without preconditions.
Both sides are preparing a spring-summer campaign on the battlefield, where a war of attrition has killed tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line.
The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington think tank, said Monday that Russia is 'quickly replenishing front-line units with new recruits to maintain the battlefield initiative.'
Russia shunned the ceasefire proposal tabled by the U.S. and European leaders but offered direct talks with Ukraine.

Putin has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government, especially Zelenskyy himself, saying his term expired last year. Under Ukraine's constitution, it is illegal for the country to hold national elections while it's under martial law, as it now is.
In a further complication, a Ukrainian decree from 2022 rules out negotiations with Putin.
But the U.S. has been applying stiff pressure on both sides since President Donald Trump came to power with a promise to end the war.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke Monday with the top diplomats from the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland, who were meeting in London, to assess 'the way forward for a ceasefire and path to peace in Ukraine,' spokesperson Tammy Bruce said.
Those European countries had pledged further sanctions on Russia if it didn't comply with a full ceasefire that Ukraine had accepted from Monday, but they made no announcement of additional punitive measures.

Ukraine reports casualties in 'most powerful attack' on Kharkiv

Ukrainian authorities reported several casualties early on Saturday following heavy Russian airstrikes on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. In a post on Telegram, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said three people were killed and 17 others injured in what he called the most powerful Russian attack on the city since the war began more than three years ago. Terekhov said Kharkiv was hit by 48 Shahed drones, two missiles and four guided bombs. "Kharkiv is experiencing the most powerful attack in the entire history of the full-scale war," he said. During the course of the Ukraine war, now in it's fourth year, Russia has illegally annexed four eastern Ukrainian territories, as well as in 2014 occupying the Crimean peninsula to the south. The Kharkhiv region borders the front line to the east, with the Russian border to the north, and is often the target of Russian attacks.

Biggest drone strike yet on Ukraine's second city

At least two people have been killed and another 17 injured in the biggest Russian drone attack on Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv, the mayor says. Ihor Terekhov says that overnight Russia launched 48 drones, as well as two missiles and four gliding bombs. "We have a lot of damage," he says, adding that three high-rising residential buildings were hit. Footage has emerged showing several storeys of one such building on fire. Six people were killed and 80 injured across Ukraine the previous night, when Russia attacked the country with more than 400 drones and nearly 40 missiles. That attack came days after Ukraine's daring drone strikes targeting Russian strategic warplanes at four air bases deep inside the country. Ukraine's security service SBU said at least 40 Russian aircraft were struck during its Operation Spider Web last Sunday. Ukraine says 117 drones were used: they were first smuggled into Russia, then placed inside wooden cabins mounted on the back of lorries and concealed below remotely operated detachable roofs. The lorries were then apparently driven to locations near the Russian air bases by drivers who were seemingly unaware of their cargo. The drones were then launched remotely. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
