Test-Riding The Jorvik JET-E16 Electric Tricycle
Speaking about the brand's goals, James Walker, founder and managing director of Jorvik Tricycles, said, 'The aim was simple: to supply reliable, supportive, and stylish British-designed tricycles, providing an option for people of all abilities to enjoy the freedom and independence of cycling. This meant adapting to the growing demand for e-bikes and affordable commuter options with payment plans, multiple colours, and a range of models, from mountain trikes to foldable options perfect for city cycling.'
On any terrain the Jorvik is highly capable.
Jorvik Tricycles
At first, the sensation of riding a tricycle feels quite bizarre. Looking forward, you're at the same height and position as you might be on a folding commuter bike, albeit with a much more comfortable seat. Since you can't see the rear wheels, instinctively you want to lean as it turns but it only needs minimal input from moving the handlebars to go where you want it to. Once you build up the confidence in its stability and handling dynamics, it's easy to ride.
Walker said, 'The typical Jorvik customer is aged 40+, with the oldest user of a Jorvik tricycle being 102! Those between the ages of 35–54 make up around 60% of our customer base. However, despite having a strong customer base among the over-40s, there is growing interest from younger riders, with around a quarter of customers aged between 18–34. Understanding the diverse needs of our riders, we offer a range of Jorvik Tricycles options to cater to different abilities. Choose a low-step frame for easy mounting, a folding frame for convenient storage, or dual batteries for an extended electric range.'
The JET-E16 is surprisingly powerful and, unlike two-wheeled electric bikes, needs minimal pedaling input on smooth flat terrain. A few pedals here and there helps it to tick along nicely. You can control the amount of assistance using plus and minus buttons on the left handlebar and this can almost be used like a braking function as well, reducing the assistance as you come towards a junction for example.
When you need to move away from a standstill, there's a handy button that gives you a boost of electric power to get you going. It will also do this in reverse which makes it easier to maneuver around a garage. As the JET-E16 is a folding tricycle, its handlebars and frame feature easy clips to make it more compact for travelling.
The battery sits behind the seat post.
Jorvik Tricycles
With the click of one button, the JET-E16 has one of the easiest startup processes: press the on button and hop on. The LCD display screen lights up to show speed, battery charge and the level of electric assistance. It's easy to see on the go and the buttons are very responsive. To effectively manage the three-wheel configuration, the JET-E16 is fitted with a rear differential which makes cornering much easier. It comes with integrated front and rear lights with a rear brake light as well.
As standard the tricycle comes with a rear storage basket which can be used to store all manner of things from shopping to a dog. Jorvik's mountain trike models feel like the ideal gardening companion for riders with large gardens who want to store a few pruning or planting tools in the rear compartment. The company even offers a mountain trike trailer with chunky tires for riders wanting to carry more.
The Jorvik JET-E16 sits towards the lower end of Jorvik's model lineup priced at £2,999 ($4,000). Its entry level model features a similar low frame design with slightly bigger rear wheels and a front basket. In the UK, Jorvik has an indoor test track at its showroom or offers home visits for test rides and its models can be shipped worldwide. At the upper end of its range, the company has a number of different mountain trike variants. The Jorvik dual battery mid drive electric folding mountain trike JMT13 with 500W of power tops the range at £4,599 ($6,100).
Walker added, 'Jorvik Tricycles is focused on expanding across the UK and the EU. With a growing customer base in the south of England, we've set our sights on opening a new bespoke showroom and indoor test track by summer 2025. Launching a new, expertly designed mobility range alongside a second showroom marks a huge milestone for Jorvik Tricycles.'
Price as tested: £2,999 ($4,000)
Drivetrain: Chain with Bafang 36v 250W rear motor
Battery: 36V 16Ah Samsung Cell Lithium Battery
Charge time: 5 to 6 hours

Apple raises investment in US by $100bn after Trump pressure
Apple has pledged a $100bn (£75bn) investment in American manufacturing after Donald Trump told Tim Cook, the chief executive, to stop making iPhones in India. The tech giant will announce a new 'American manufacturing programme' designed to bring more of Apple's supply chain to the US. Mr Cook is expected to confirm details of the deal at the White House on Wednesday alongside the president. It means Apple has now pledged to invest $600bn in the US since Mr Trump's return to the presidency, after committing to spend $500bn in February. Apple is among the biggest potential losers from Mr Trump's tariffs and the president has repeatedly exhorted Mr Cook to assemble iPhones in the US. Most of the phones the company sells in the US are now made in India after a years-long effort to move manufacturing away from China. But in May, Mr Trump said he had a 'little problem' with Mr Cook over Apple's manufacturing plans. 'We've treated you really good, we've put up with all the plants that you've built in China for years, now you got to build [for] us,' he said. 'We're not interested in you building in India, India can take care of themselves ... we want you to build here.' Mr Trump has threatened Apple with 25pc tariffs if its iPhones are not made in the US, an announcement that knocked tens of billions off the company's value. Also, in a fresh headache for Mr Cook, the White House announced new tariffs on India on Wednesday as a penalty for buying oil from Russia. Karoline Leavitt, the White House's assistant press secretary, said: 'President Trump's America-first economic agenda has secured trillions of dollars in investments that support American jobs and bolster American businesses. 'Today's announcement with Apple is another win for our manufacturing industry that will simultaneously help re-shore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security.' Shares in Apple rose more than 4pc following news of the investment plans. Mr Cook has repeatedly secured exemptions for Apple's phones, tablets and smartwatches from Mr Trump's tariffs, but the president's shifting policies have led to uncertainty from investors about whether the company will be stung in future. It still paid $800m in tariffs in the three months to June, and expects to pay $1.1bn in the next three months. It has flown planeloads of iPhones to the US in order to beat new levies. US charges Chinese nationals with Nvidia chips export breach
Two Chinese nationals were arrested this week on charges that they sent tens of millions of dollars worth of advanced AI chips made by Nvidia Corp. to China in violation of U.S. export restrictions, according to authorities. The defendants used a company based in El Monte, California, to export sensitive technology, including graphics processing units, used in artificial intelligence without obtaining the necessary government licenses, the Justice Department said in a statement Tuesday. According to a criminal complaint provided by the agency, the two individuals shipped Nvidia-designed chips, including the company's H100 AI accelerators, which are the basis for computers used to create and run artificial intelligence software. Such chips require official approval for sales to certain countries. The accused were identified by authorities as Chuan Geng, 28, of Pasadena, and Shiwei Yang, 28, of El Monte. They have been charged with violating the Export Control Reform Act and could face as much as 20 years in prison, according to the Justice Department. Lawyers for the Geng and Yang couldn't be immediately located for comment. "This case demonstrates that smuggling is a nonstarter," Nvidia said in a statement. The company said it primarily sells its products to well-known partners "who help us ensure that all sales comply with U.S. export control rules." "Even relatively small exporters and shipments are subject to thorough review and scrutiny, and any diverted products would have no service, support or updates," Nvidia said. Over the past several years, the U.S. has steadily tightened restrictions on exports of semiconductors and chipmaking equipment to keep China from gaining ground in the race for AI dominance. The Trump administration is exploring ways to include enhanced location-tracking in AI chips to help with export control enforcement. Up until being superseded earlier this year by a new line of products from Santa Clara, California-based Nvidia, the H100s were considered the most capable such processors. Their export to China and other countries the U.S. has deemed a threat to national security requires licenses from the Commerce Department that are not usually given. In the complaint, authorities called the H100 "the most powerful GPU chip on the market" and claimed the defendants sought to evade U.S. export restrictions on it by shipping through third countries. The Justice Department said Geng and Yang operated a company called ALX Solutions Inc. that was founded in 2022 shortly after the U.S. Commerce Department began requiring licenses to sell such chips to overseas buyers. Export records and other business documents indicate that the company sent at least 20 shipments to shipping and freight-forwarding companies in Singapore and Malaysia but never received payments from those entities, the Justice Department said. ALX Solutions instead received "numerous payments" from companies based in Hong Kong and China, including a $1 million payment from a China-based company in January 2024, the DOJ said. Those records show that in December 2024, the company had sent a shipment of GPUs that it claimed was in compliance with U.S. export rules, the DOJ said, but neither ALX Solutions nor the defendants had received the U.S. licenses required for such a transaction. Authorities said they searched the ALX Solutions office and seized phones belonging to Geng and Yang and found evidence of communications about shipping chips covered by export controls to China through Malaysia in violation of U.S. restrictions. Yang was also accused of overstaying her visa, according to the Justice Department. Geng is a legal permanent resident, authorities said. A federal judge in Los Angeles on Monday ordered Geng released on a $250,000 bond and scheduled a detention hearing for Yang on Aug. 12. The court did not take any pleas in the case. The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security is assisting the probe, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. -With assistance from Ian King. GM's Californian Design Team Dreamt Up This SoCal-Inspired Corvette Concept With A Removable Canopy
Earlier this year General Motors announced that it would be revealing a series of forward-thinking Corvette concept cars, each developed by one of its different global design styles. The first one was created by GM's newly opened design studio in England — sure, whatever, good for them, but we were a little bit wary about a Corvette designed by Brits. The Corvette is perhaps the most quintessentially American car and among the most recognizable, especially if we're talking sports cars. Luckily, the General has now shown off the second of its new Corvette hypercar concepts, which was designed by the team at GM's Advanced Design studio in Pasadena, California, a 148,000-square-foot facility that has 130 staff including artisans, creatives, designers, fabricators, and sculptors. Aptly called the California Corvette, this concept "reimagines the Corvette with a futuristic Southern California twist and reflects GM's deep roots in the SoCal design community." Now, this concept isn't meant to preview the next-gen Corvette per se, but it does show us the sort of ideas and themes GM's designers are interested in. Read more: These Are The Cars You'd Buy If They Were $20,000 Cheaper Long And Super Low Where the British concept was more angular and fighter jet–like, this one is curvier and more shark-like, with splashes of color and intricate details. At 182.5 inches it's essentially the same length as a C8 Corvette, but its 109-inch-long wheelbase is a two inches longer, and it's just 41.4 inches tall, making it a couple inches lower than a Ford GT. While GM doesn't give any specific powertrain details, the brand envisions it would be electric with a T-shaped prismatic battery pack that gives it a supercar driving position and aids airflow around the chassis. Its single-piece canopy is hinged at the front and the upper shell can be removed, transforming it into an "open-air track car," though sadly there are no images of what that looks like. There may not seem to be any traditional Corvette design cues at first glance, but its coke-bottle shape, prominent fender flares, double-bubble roof, tapered cabin and pointy nose all connect it to past models. There is some fascinating aero trickery going on, like the U-shaped section on the rear deck and the way you can see all the way through the car, from the front end looking into the side intakes all the way back to the giant diffuser. Step Inside The interior is even more futuristic, with almost every element stripped away, but the shape of the "dashboard," "door panels," and "center console" are similar to the C8's cabin. I put those elements in quotes because the SoCal Corvette concept really just has a yoke-style steering wheel with a slim digital gauge cluster... and that's basically it. The driver is cocooned by ribbons of red, which wrap around and are integrated into the car's tub. It's not exactly realistic, but very cool. Brian Smith, the design director of the Pasadena studio and lead of the project, said "Southern California has been at the heart of automotive and design culture for a century, and GM has had a deep design presence here for nearly 40 years. We wanted to ensure that this concept was developed through that SoCal lens, but with a global and futuristic outlook. Duality of purpose is the basis of this concept's design strategy." The company says the Pasadena studio also "reinforces GM's commitment to U.S. design leadership, creation, and innovation, with California continuing to shape the future of mobility. GM hasn't yet said when the next Corvette concept will be unveiled, but the company has design studios in Detroit, Seoul and Shanghai, so it'll likely come from one of those. Want more like this?
